I like and have supported Pearson but I've realised recently (noting this is the third time in a month I've watched lifetime-bad performances) I'm probably more enamoured by having a manager like Pearson - as in a leader, known in football, speaks from experience, bit of charisma, grin on his face but scowl if he needs one - than actually having Pearson himself. Because there is no way in hell anyone can seriously keep on with this "what he inherited" nonsense and I'm saying that as someone who has defended him and is probably still on the fence.

What alarms me more than even results (although since the last international break those represent a huge collapse from where we started) is that the basic quality that I would expect to be coached on the training ground is not only not there, but rapidly getting worse. The standard of passing is abysmal for a team that we're led to believe trains together every day. We make more unforced errors than any side I've seen us play and I now include League One Lincoln in that (who misplaced one pass to us all night - which outclasses our standards).

How can it be "what he inherited" when it is players making an unacceptable number of basic errors game after game. We had our standard 3-4 occasions of passing the ball straight out of play (two with the chance to get a player clear to the byline), probably a similar number of being caught in possession or just giving it away at close range, and then of course the usual any number of woeful crosses and corners, most notably by Jay DaSilva who this season is like a bad caricature of himself, and specifically under the coaching of the present lot.

NONE of it is excused by prior recruitment or leadership at the club - this is a level of errors and absence of technical ability that'd be alarming several levels down the pyramid, let alone a team in the Championship. This unusual trait can only be a product of the drills and quality control of the current management and coaching staff. Probably the most accurate commentary is by Pearson himself, he's said a number of times he might just be here to point us in the right direction - I think he's done that but he is unable to elevate standards any further.

Good post & Pearson has had the added bonus of recruiting his coaching team in Euell & Fleming so has his men on the ground.  We have no idea what goes on behind the scenes & the frustrating part is that as well as we played against Sheff U & West bro then  in same block of games we witness Brum, Reading & last night.  We know these players can play & I left reasonably cheered last Tuesday and totally depressed last night.  I think in a nutshell, our strongest starting 11 are decent but we have no depth to us.  The passing as you say was atrocious and a simple 10 yard pass either went out of play or under/over hit.   I believe this to be the basics that you would expect at an amateur level let alone a professional club.  Depressing situation but agree that Pearson has had long enough to make a difference.

  2. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any worse along comes tonight.  We are in a rut and badly needed a lift with a win, so Nige makes 8 changes!  Players as you say @GrahamCstock has risen are those who didn’t play.  Comes to something that we need a 19 & 20 year old to drive us forward.  If I was Martin, Klose, Sykes, JD, King, Atkinson, Semenyo watching their effort and desire to get on the ball I would be ashamed tonight as most earning a significant amount more than them but no heart & hiding when we needed them.

Never a good time straight after a game to comment but I’m fuming with what I’ve seen tonight & tried to stay patient as lots of posters I respect are so pro Pearson but time for a change as going backwards.  Football is a results business and and 29% win ratio is appalling.  I appreciate that he’s had a tough hand but are we really as bad as what I’ve witnessed in person as tonight , Reading and Birmingham all within a 4 week period.

We won’t make change as can’t afford it but Neil Critchley would be my choice before anyone asks for an option.

Was it Cotts who left gaps on the bench rather than giving youth players a taste of a first team match day?

Even if they were never going to get on, surely the experience would have been useful.

Pearson has done that twice this season in fairness

  4. The academy is the most successful part of our club and if that wasn’t performing then I dread to think where we would be as a club. Tinnion & team should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved & with more to come the future is positive.

Not only are the youngsters the ones to drive the team forwards  but have become our biggest assets.

Hilariously meagre attendance for the tinpot scum. Still I’m sure they’ll shout “SQUIRREL” and obsess over our following at the Riverside.

What a pathetic bunch of flanges the Abandoned Tent City mob are.

Wouldn’t crow too much as be interesting to see what we get on Tuesday

Not too difficult to work out which of these it is, is it?

Couple of observations, has it ever been explained why Clint Hill left? Thought not.

What on earth could have made a woman married to a person with a prison term in his past possibly change her mind about this?

Wasn’t Clint Hill & wife at said dinner party when the assault took place? Story I was told was that both mr & Mrs Hill were appalled with what they witnessed and Mrs Hill was adamant that he wouldn’t work with Joe Barton.  No idea if correct but that’s what I was told.

  7. I never really swear apart from the occasional f word at football when emotions get the better of me. I believe it’s ok in the heat of a game and with your mates and even if it’s in front of kids and ladies at football. However, some people use swearing in every sentence so it’s as others have said showing some common decency and respect to others around if for arguments sake your swearing constantly for 90 mins.  Some of our songs include swearing with one including the C word about whose not singing over there!! People expect to hear it but imo it crosses a line if there are children are about if used constantly.

No if you blindly support NP you are allowed to be a patronising dick. If you question anything about him you are deemed unworthy of your opinion.

Don’t mind him. He’s been backing NP so long he can’t go back and times are getting rough for him.

I have this with friends that if you criticise or question Nige then then instantly become very defensive.  Its like they are members of some Nigel Pearson cult as they won’t accept that he ever gets it wrong.

it’s a fine line as a couple of positive results then it would even be a discussion.  I’m still prepared to give him time and was very impressed by him at the forum & recent sky interview.  However, he isn’t perfect and we still leak goals and has signed numerous defenders to make us difficult to beat.  I acknowledge that going forward we have been good but we cannot keep relying on us scoring 2 or 3 goals to wing games as we are finding.  His subs are also very questionable.

Keep offering opinions as that what forums are for & at the end of the day it’s a results business and we are sliding towards the bottom.  A win ratio of 30% deserves to be questioned & rightly so as despite the financial backdrop it’s not good enough.

  9. Whilst we have been dreadful against Brum, Reading & Possibly Millwall, how disheartening is this table as we should have taken more than 8 points from our  last 10. I hadn’t realised how poor our points return has been & with Boro & Watford to come we have to buck the trend of playing well and taking no points.  Do I have my red tinted glasses on as believe we are decent in the main this season or are we in trouble? We need our best players fit but guess all teams say the same & players like Weimann & Semenyo to start firing again.

Results will come…if we keep playing that like. Issue is, we don’t really. 2 wins from 11 is very concerning regardless of performances. The consistent horrific goals conceded is a real issue now and no longer a joke or blip.

Not worried yet, but I do think there’s cause for concern now. Those are two huge chances for much needed home wins missed.

Last 10 games I believe we have picked up 8 points and over those games are bottom of the form table. We need to turn good performances into wins or come out with a point as a minimum.  That’s worrying from a points return and we need to stop the slide as good performances mean nowt if results don’t come.

  11. Thought he was poor at Reading and not great v Millwall.  The problem he has is that his displays have set the bar so high for himself & raised all our expectations. A decent performance from him gets considered sub standard but in reality he did ok.  His performances previously were 8 or 9s out of 10 but he has had a few 6s recently.  My biggest frustration is his delivery from set places which by and large have been disappointing when we know the quality he possesses .  He’s the one midfielder who can go past an opponent & one of first names on team sheet but I wonder if the summer tournament and lack of a break is impacting him.  November a good time to recharge for him.

Firstly - that was very enjoyable today. A good game of football that we were unlucky not to win. But, looking at this the other way, today Swansea were the perfect opponent for us. They played in the back and midfield, and rarely up front. First half, it was 1 vs 3 in our back line and aside from Obafemis tactic of following Max, there was no pressure on our scratch back line.

I get Swansea have a way of playing. But for Martin not to push men up and play more direct was naive.

This leads me to the point. If you look at the recent games lost - QPR, Brum, Reading, Millwall. We’ve been bullied. Stronger, more aggressive players. You’re never getting that with Swansea - but you will with Sheffield Utd (McBurnie etc).

So, I’m delighted with today. But at the same time markedly concerned for Tuesday. The question is, can we play like that, against greater physicality!

The 3 at the back were superb today but we won’t be able to compete with physical players with that 3.  Perfect as you say but horses for courses with some teams as we need aerial ability to supplement physicality.  As you say, today was perfect for the 3 but boy did they play well.

  14. Trouble before the game on Ashton Rd where there must of been about 60 Swansea youth walking through the park with about  6 police with them. It provoked a reaction from those on the natch wall and bottles were thrown. Why do we as a club not learn as the corner of Atyeo/Dolman has history and yet we allow lots of those brave Welsh boys to walk forward past stewards and offer out all those in the Dolman.  Not one was thrown out and there were loads standing on the netting.  Why are we not more switched on as a club.  When we go away in numbers we get wrapped up pretty quick but Swans seem to have the freedom of our City.

As for the **** who ran on the pitch & goad the Dolman after their goal (did he punch the steward?) I hope you enjoy your spell in HMP. To let everyone out at the same time beggars belief.   Just wish we held on as Swansea rivalling Cardiff in the dislike stakes.

  15. Pring is full of power and pace which is the type of player Pearson likes. Thought Jay was ok today but when playing 3 games a week surely we should have seen more of Pring even if it was as a substitute.  Clever foul at the end which needed to happen. Well done Cam.

That was very very insightful.  All three speakers were excellent.

    A summary:

    1. Accounts out in the coming weeks.  £10m better off that last year but still a big loss

    2. FFP no issue, as expected

    3. City current report from Nige "could do better" but "on the right course"

    4. Academy and club much more aligned

    5. No players close to signing new contract.  Problem is that wages are dropping and players won't sign for less money, which the club has to offer in the current climate.  Gould says very hard to compete with parachute payment clubs as well

    6. Question about how Euell is doing and how his role affects what Nige does.....Pearson said worked with Euell at Southampton, he's thoughtful, a forward which is important.  Curtis more of a talker, loyal....good to have different characters.

    7. Fan loyalty scheme being revamped and out by Xmas.  Very different to what we have seen before.  More than just discounts.....experiences money cant buy.  loyalty points can be earned by spending in other retail., over 150 retailers in total.  Gould apologised for delay

    8.  Nige was asked why he always starts replies to questions with 'ummm'.  Said he is thinking about what he shouldnt say!

    9.  Will Gould leaving trigger a restructure, maybe a DoF?  Gould said it is an opportunity.  Clubs are structured in different ways.  Structure is currently good in that they know what they are doing.  Scouting systems and coaches scouting work well.  Nige says we dont need to reinvent the wheel.  We dont need something new just for the sake of it.  Sounds like he wouldnt want a DoF.

    10.  Why do we tend to struggle against big strong physical teams Nige?  "Because we arent a big strong physical team".  Nige said he would like to challenge teams like Millwall better but it will take time.  Need to be more clever.  We dealt with them, they didnt open us up but we lost because of two individual mistakes.  Too many individual mistakes still.  We dont have a squad that will ever be taller man for man.  We can only add one or two players as we go so even if we wanted that we cannot have it.  Got some 'monsters' coming through the academy so could change if they are good enough.  Nige says he tells Jay Dasilva to use his height (!)......Jay doesnt get beaten very often.  Some of our bigger lads could learn from him.  We have a lot of pace in the squad.  We have quick footballers.  That is the model. Swansea have conceded 40% of their goals to counter attacks so we have an opportunity. W

    11. We can become more consistent by learning to draw games that we then lose.  Need enough knowledgeable players in the side to influence teammates to settle for a point.  If we had drawn half the games we have lost we would be just outside the play offs.  Very tight league.  Nige is an optimistc, we are not that far away.  We have only drawn three games and we have lost games we shouldnt lose, either through careless mistakes or royal cockups!

    12.  Asked on Jan Transfer Window, Gould says not a lot to spend.  We have sold £20m worth of players per year in recent years.  Recent strategy is to target the best out of contract players.  We look to be in top 10 clubs in terms of salary spend so that is a sweet spot for us.  We are attractive in that market and that is the market we are targetting.  In the event we sell a player we will look to reinvest a percentage of that.  (Nige asked how much and was met with laughter).  No magic money tree.  Nige asks about money a lot but is onside with where we are. Nige doesnt believe in collecting players.  Would want a centre back.  Important to remember we only want better than we have.  Cannot fast-track.  Will not sign a middle of the road championship player.  Youngsters coming through.  Need a Naismith there to help bring players through, a position where if you make a mistake it will often prove costly, like a goalkeeper.

    13.  League average of home grown players in squad last season was 2.5. Ours was 6.5-7.  We are in a good location, would be harder if we were a midlands club.  Our long term future is our academy.  Tinnion works closely with recruitment team on squad depths.  They will look at youth depth before Nige looks to sign a player.  We dont need to be a cat one academy as we can offer opportunities.  Fewer loans going out now as more chance for opportunity now.  No more days of 10-12 loans going out.

    14.  On Loans.....130 Premier League players currently on loan to 72 clubs in EFL at cost of £30m.  Dont want loans that will block our own talent.  Question asked 'could one or two loans in Jan not push us over the line?'  Gould said 'yes if they can provide enough value....no value when they leave 6 months later.  Tammy and Andy Cole given as examples by fans there....and Ryan Kent!  Nige says the market has changed.  He has taken Cleverley and Lingard (who was disgrace) from Man United, Kane from Spurs but didnt play him as wasnt good enough.  Back in those days first 6 months on loan was free.  Nowadays you bring them in and they are earning twice more than anyone else at the club so doesnt work financially.  The game has changed.  Premier League Loan Managers are expected to turn a profit.

    15.  Question to Nige of do you ever look at reporters asking him questions and think 'why have you asked me that?'  Nige said he isnt good at hiding it!  Wears his heart on his sleeve.  He doesnt like lazy questions.  IF journalists ask intelligent questions then happy to ask all day. Their job is to ask difficult questions.

    16.  5-3-2 suits us.  We dont have full backs, we have wing backs.  Sykes been excellent.  Nige likes 2 up top which this allows.  All of our strikers are better in partnerships and we have players who like to play behind strikers.  We aren't yet a 'clean sheet side'.  The system is there as it suits the players.  Nige and staff had conversation today about benefits of changing it but comes down to the fact that this is the best system.  It gets our best players on the pitch.  Nige isnt a massive fan of 3 at the back but its not about him.

    17.  14 Premier League scouts at a recent under 16 games.  PL clubs can take our players on the cheap.  Need to get them signed on their 17th birthday.  The WSM player we signed this week came to the club and Tinnion showed him how many first team players are ex academy.  Wolves wanted him but he joined us.  Gould said he would never recommend Premier League academies.  England under 19 players had hardly any first team appearances....Scott has a lot.  Maddox and Herbie Kane both below City now after leaving early chasing the dream.  Lloyd Kelly stayed and look at where he is.

    18.  Awful at set pieces last season.  Last 6 games of the season we changed to zonal marking and it improved.  We have unreliable markers so we need to defend zonally. It suits the players that we have.  If we had more reliable markers we would do mixture of zonal and man-to-man marking.  Second goal against Reading was a quality ball in and no blame there.  The ones the two games before that are very irritating.  Many internal discussions on it and practised it and practised it.  Will continue to do what we can do board our goal up.

    19.  World Cup plans for players not going will have time off then programmes to do in their own time then mini pre-season.  One practise game.

    20.  Tinnion says Cat One academy wouldnt benefit us. Couldnt loan players out as would need those players to play against the Prem academies.  Costs a lot more.  Lot more pressure.  Cat One can still take other Cat One players.

In fairness that’s a great summary

I hate to sound like an old fart, but the Western league isn't what it was and I think much of that is the money that can get chucked around at that level. When I was younger, the league was of a standard that players could be taken from that level and relatively easily slip into the pro game. Off the top of my head , Rovers got Paul Randall, Gary Penrice, Nicky  Tanner, Phil Purnell and Nigel Martyn from that-or similar- levels.  Western League clubs were established at that level and there wasn't really too much movement among the pyramid (if it was even in place back then) In relatively recent times it has become possible for teams with ambition (and money) to shoot for the stars - I remember Bitton being a Bristol & District side and Forest Green Rovers being Western League (possibly even County League?).

I used to be involved with AEK Boco, who as AEK Rangers were just a parks football side, but once the merger with the kids side (Boco) came about, there was an injection of cash and that added with the ambition of some dedicated people, the senior side are now Western league with a large clubhouse and floodlights. Now they, like most other clubs at that level, have a relatively high turnover of players as young lads chase the money , and who can blame them with the cost of rent and mortgages?

As long as there is the money at this level, there will be more clubs like Yate, Bitton and Mangotsfield who soar too high and come crashing back down.

Even happens at local rugby now.

Not to mention my mate Steve Badock who remains the easiest gas head to wind up.  My local club is AEK and great set up with some good people involved.

Must say I totally disagree re Brislington, Dave. I hear this comment a fair bit from those outside of the club looking in, many I would suggest with a tad bit of jealousy. I enjoyed a couple of spells with Brislington as a youngster and must say the spell with Nigel Webb in charge would be as close as you’d get to a unified club (perhaps not as close as the 70’s and 80’s with the local lads) from first team to the 18’s. Some superb non league talent graced Briz during this period, far from mercenaries I can assure you - likes of Rob Claridge, Don Forbes, Tony Cook et al.

Perhaps you are referring to present day. I’m not close enough to speculate.

Badger is one of the good guys and someone you’d want to play for.  Was there for over 6 seasons and played with  some great people who are still involved now I believe such as Phil Brake.  Played under Derek Robbins, Jamie Patch, Steve D’Arcy and Chris Elston and loved it there.  Believe that they are known to throw money about recently & mostly funded by the manager from what I hear.  No way are Ash Kington and Joe McLeman paying for the love of the club as both were at Bitton. Could be wrong but it’s a great club.

Mousehole has a very professional set up and the owners are tipping the money in it.  Which seems bizarre if you know Mousehole - it's a small coastal village round the corner from Penzance with a load of holiday homes and elderly residents.

"Regional" however tends to assume that the country is a narrow strip.  I know the chap who used to drive the Truro City supporters' minibus and he worked out the mileages each season to give  a rough budget for fuel.  He calculated that the mileage for Truro being in Conference South was actually higher than for their being in Conference North.

The long trips in the South were to Kent and East Anglia and were much further than to the Midlands teams of the Conference North.

I’ve  watched Mousehole recently & they were very good Turned up in the Cornish Pirates luxury coach. The money comes I believe from camping/caravan park that over looks the ground. God knows what their budget is as told they had 2 lads from Leeds playing for them. Good side though
