I agree. The Sykes recruitment was a puzzle when we had enough cover there and not much cash. Surely we had other priorities. I’m not sure he’s that good either.
I wouldn’t have renewed Andy King’s contract and probably not Klose’s. Is Klose’s new contract one or two years, Dave? I seem to remember there is an option for an extra year.  I hope not (unless the club has it, not the player).

What! Not renew Andy King's contract? He's our 1st choice centre half!

Thanks, as always, for a very interesting match day thread.

In particular, I was intrigued by the following little snippet about their benefactor, David Whelan.

When Whelan’s football career, as an uncompromising defender at Blackburn Rovers, was cruelly cut short after breaking his leg in the 1960 FA Cup Final against Wolverhampton Wanderers, he used the compensation to build his JJB Sports business empire.

I don't think I have ever heard that, and I certainly don't recall DW ever mentioning it in the many interviews he has given.

    Football career[edit]

Whelan played 78 times as a left back, scoring three times, for Blackburn Rovers and was a member of its 1960 FA Cup Final team, which lost 3–0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Whelan himself did not complete the game, a feisty challenge from Whelan on Norman Deeley culminated in the Blackburn man being withdrawn before half time due to a broken leg. Whelan's injury is one of many serious injuries suffered by players in the 1950–60 era and was known as the Wembley hoodoo.[5] Following his leg break, Whelan was sold to Crewe Alexandra, where he made his debut on 23 February 1963 in a 4–0 first round League Cup defeat at Port Vale, and notched up 115 appearances through to April 1966.[6] He then retired to concentrate on developing a retail grocery business.

    It is true!

  3. No more Videos please from the city site telling us how fit the players are! What a joke! In the last few seasons we are out on our feet after half time, just going back and back, disappearing up our own ass holes in a cloud of blue smoke.Whilst other teams just seem faster fitter and stronger the longer the game goes on! 2-1 up then we died! we have some outstanding individual players, but as a unit we are shit!

  4. its the same old story! We are always waiting for someone to come back from injury! In this case Semenyo ,where are the goals coming from? NP seems reluctant to give wells a run in the side.I just hope we can stay up!

  5. Sporting bodies are more powerful than the law! So uefa decided on the verge of a world cup,and with the season starting early to carry on and play the nations league. Thus giving players no break .Kevin De Bruyne described these games as glorified friendlies and that is exactly what they are.But uefa has spoken so we must obey! All players should be resting now and preparing for the coming season. Not bothered by the England results, come the world cup the commitment, the team selection will be on a much higher level.and we should get out of the group stage easily enough(famous last words?) I don't believe we will wn the world cup, although we have a great crop of players. And i am not calling for Southgate's head even though i am not a fan.Descisions or lack of descisions he made during the WC semi and the euro final cost us dearly.1-0 up at the break against Croatia, not Germany or Brazil or Argentina but Croatia!! In the 2nd half we seemed drained of energy and devoid of ideas,in the euro finals we took a very early lead, and then just went back and back and disappeared up our own backsides in a cloud of blue smoke, then came the penalty debacle! For my money he is mister safety first, and does not trust the flair players, and cannot make the right calls during a game.Happy to be proved wrong?

They won the FA Cup in 1959 - Elton John's cousin scored one of their goals. True! Johnny Quigley - who played for us between 66 & 68 - also played in that game.

Up until then, they'd been considered the junior partner in Nottingham.

Roy Dwight (Eltons cousin) was also carried off after 33 minutes with a broken leg.

Really? I thought part of City's problem in the last 10 minutes was they suddenly started pumping the ball long and went against everything they stand for. They couldn't have looked less threatening during the second half of extra time.

Their heads went completely and collectively - from manager through to players.

Oh really!! No! o'reilley Top of the morning to you!

  8. The problem was not hard to spot.Despite all the so-called sophistication of modern football, when in a desperate last-grasp situation, you revert to 1950's 60's 70's etc etc football, you pump the ball in the box at every available opportunity (Ask any league 1 league 2 manager.)That what real did,up to the moment they scored they had not had a shot on goal! Contrast that with what man ciy did! Trying to walk the ball into the net.Stirling was particularly guilty of that, always trying to beat yet another man and then losing the ball in the process. After conceding those 2goals i thought i was watching our lot!
