As COVID-19 continues to spread across the world, it seems only a matter of time before it starts to really infect Western populations on a mass scale.  There is talk of cancelling or delaying the Olympics and Euro 2020 and panic seems to be rising.

What are your thoughts?  Are you worried, or do you think it is overblown and we will all be fine?

Personally I sit somewhere in the middle of the "PANIC!!!" and "Meh nothing to worry about".  I think it sounds like this virus has the potential to kill a lot of older people and people with underlying health issues.  And I don't think we are going to be able to stop it spreading, no matter how many times we sing Happy Birthday while washing our hands.

I think i'm the same. I was in the "meh, this is overblown" category and I still think it will be all forgotten in a few weeks (or at least wont be dominating the media)

That said, we've had two people turn up to work who have recently been to North Italy just before it hit the news and another come back from Helsinki on Monday. We also work in an environment with lots of products shipped in and out from around the world, and lots of eastern european workers coming and going from across the continent so that chances of it coming in are probably higher than a typical office job. I've got a couple of relatives who are generally unwell already so I wouldn't want to potentially catch something and passing it on before I even realise I've got it.

I'm certainly not in panic mode, I'll be gutted if Glastonbury and the Euro's get cancelled

it will soon be so prevalent that whether you go to sports fixtures or not will make little difference.  80% of the population will have it or get it and for most it will be mild.  At the moment containment will have some effect but by May it will be way beyond that point.  I really don't believe that this virus is stoppable.

The worrying bit is the 2% mortality rate, though normal flu is probably 1% isn't it.  I doubt that a vaccine will be available until the next flu season and because of the type of virus it is, I doubt whether it is going to burn itself out.

While we are in the containment phase, many events will be cancelled, but by May there will probably be no point.

    80% of the population ? I think you’re being a bit dramatic.

Maybe if Bolton and Bury go under it will provide a stark reminder to other clubs spending above their means...

Do we just say this every time a club goes under, until the next time? Nothing’s changing within football and if anything the spending/gambling on promotion is getting more reckless

The gas lot are saying that Sunderland performance would hold its own against any championship team ??

They really don’t know the gap, Sunderland looked very poor & would take a beating by almost all Championship teams.

I dont think we're ones to comment about performances against Sunderland :(

Is it these - this from a Daily Mail article referred to by another poster n this thread?

Cardiff are not asking FIFA, the FA — or the police, according to the most recent dispatches — to investigate any of their other transfer deals or negotiations.

They do not want them poking around in the six that involved Unique Sports Management, the company that counts Neil Warnock's son James among its employees, for instance. James Warnock is believed to have been involved in Cardiff business involving at least three players — Sean Morrison, Rhys Healey and Craig Noone — but the club seem happy enough with that.

They also do not appear to have a problem with Jack McKay, son of Willie McKay who helped broker the Sala deal, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract as a professional with the club in January 2018 despite enjoying a less than exceptional career.

McKay began his career at Doncaster — a club with which his father had been involved — before going on loan to Ilkeston, signing for Leeds, being loaned to Airdrieonians, signing for Cardiff, and being loaned to Chesterfield in the National League. Given Cardiff were third in the Championship and chasing Premier League promotion at the time of McKay's signing, this seems an excellent if unexpected break for a player who was already 21 and had scored just one goal, for Airdrieonians against Peterhead in the third tier of Scottish football.

McKay, by the way, is a striker. Since joining Chesterfield in the National League on loan from Cardiff, he has made two substitute appearances totalling nine minutes.

By happy coincidence, another of Willie's sons, Jack's twin brother Paul, was also considered good enough to be signed by Cardiff, at exactly the same time. He had also been with Doncaster and Ilkeston, as well as Gainsborough Trinity and finally Leeds, where he had played one game, against non-League Sutton United, in the FA Cup. Leeds lost.

This chequered pedigree, however, was enough to get him a contract until 2020 with Cardiff, the same as his brother. Paul is now on loan to Morecambe, currently 21st in League Two, where he has played 18 minutes across four matches.

Not dodgy at all signing those 2 McKay lads... ?

Thanks Pembo. Top, top, straight-talking bloke respected by the players, who saved us from relegation and went on to win the double alongside SC. I'll never forget that special, special night you helped to give us at Bradford City. Very best of luck for the future.

The fact that Pembo didn't even get a thankyou on the Official Site - just a "relieved of duties" - signifies to me that he must have disagreed so violently with what Johnson was doing on more than one occasion - that he could have saved us once again if LJ had been sacked instead.

The whole episode shows what a shower of shite they are. He's best off out of it.

I agree. I'll leave the debate about him being part of our downfall this season to the other threads.

He deserves thanks for steadying the ship and being a part of our title winning season, and regardless of how its turned out he at least deserved a "thanks for your service" from the club. I bet LJ gets more when he finally goes!

If Rovers had beat us to earn their tie at Chelsea, you could understand the gloating that is all over social media.

As it is, they are mocking us because of the luck of a cup draw..?!

Celebrate a fun day out in the capital against a top club by all means, but how they think it reflects on us is just bizzare!

    #gaslogic

Had the game been played on Tuesday we wouldnt have known any different!

  8. When was the last time England lost a competitive game to a team below them in the rankings?

im sure Uruguay were above us going into the last WC. We didn't lose at the euros, 2010 Germany must have been above us? So I make it Ukraine in 2009.

weve lost some friendlies that we shouldn't have, but so do other countries. Look at Spain. Terrible WC campaign as defending champions and lost to Slovakia in qualifying.

Ultimately we are a top 10 team that will beat most teams we play until we get to the later stages of a tournament.

  9. Those rating se just as bad, England shouldn't be near the top 10, along with Wales down in 44th with Japan ahead.

Why? Some will argue you can name 10 teams better than England but based on what? Their style of play? Their top players? Their results?

Belgium are currently ranked number 2 - they are hugely over rated. They haven't beaten anyone worth raving about, cant even credit them for beating France as they are poor now.

Only 2 teams have beaten us in a competitive fixture since Germany trounced us 5 years ago. Last years WC was a farce, but I still think we are a top 10 team at least. We are certainly better than Romania, Belgium, Chile and Wales, regardless of what those rankings might say, though I'd accept that Italy and Spain would still be above us and possibly Netherlands (along with the other teams that are above)

  10. Good on ya.

In fact il go one better, alchohol clearly clouded my judgement of the game because I didn't realise quite how much we dominated possession and chances (according to the stats on sky).

In my defence, when you are 2-0 down in a bar full of Leeds scum, you need to drink a LOT to get through it.

I still have concerns over the 3-5-2 in this league, but it's clear to see the fight and team spirit exists, and that's worth a lot!
