Would You Travel By Train To The

Recommended Posts

Letting the train take the strain would enable me to have a few beers, Parson St would be good and save on a walk from T.M and about £15 for Petrol. In 40 odd years have only got the train once to a home game. Will certainly consider it more next season, though watching out for bumping into our rivals :bruce_h4h: on the same train.

glos boy not sure about where you live in Gloucestershire?

but looking at the prices its seven pounds from chelt or glos to parson street

for those reading this about rail travel give parson street a try on the first game of the season

and see what its like

I

maybe for those who use parson street towards to nailsa or towards Bristol

could give us some info of how many get on or off at parson street

Can only say how useful Parson Street is on a match day, that are plenty of services from the Weston corridor and from Temple Meads on a match day catering for all - whether you like to get there early and stay late for a beer or get there just prior to kick off and coming straight home.

This scheme I know would be taken up by a large number from Weston, normally the group 4 tickets are used which half the price anyway but this would be useful for people travelling outside this bracket

You can rule out anyone from the other side of town using this service. Travelling from Yate to Parson Street on a Saturday involves a 50 minute wait at either Filton Abbeywood or Temple Meads. In the past I've got the train to TM and ran/walked the rest of the way but it's easier to drive these days.

Not wanting to go down the politics road, but I am

When the M5 bridge crossing was in its planning stage

what the planners could/should have done was construct

a railway bridge from the A369 junction towards avonmouth

aross the river into avonmouth station

what a commuter route that would have been in this day and age

As regards to those from the north side of town if the XX:55

from service that goes to taunton stopped at parson street would you consider

using the train if you have to travel from the north side of the City

if it could be done

I think only two services would be required the 12:55 and 13:55

I haven't looked at the return times yet

give me your thoughts

If the train from Yate to Taunton stopped at Parson Street then yes I would definitely use it.

Don't be naughty please!

,

If we, and I do mean WE, got the 12:55 and or the 13:55pm

trains to stop at Parson street

Just remember that in this George Orwell Surveillance Society we live in,

the ticket machines would be down loaded and they would see

how many tickets were issued from ANYWHERE station to parson street between some time in the morning and 14:00pm for saturday matches

If no tickets were issued at those times they might say

we won't stop there any more on the 12:55 or the 13:55pm services

If Portishead could be bothered to build the train station it so desparately needs then I'd use it all the time as well. :noexpression:

It's not that straight forward, they need to upgrade the line to passenger level (currently only frieght) which would be at a considerable cost for signaling and also the work required on the 3 tunnels along the line. Also I think it all hinges on signal work required where the branch line meets the main line (by Parson Street) I guess. They plan to do this by 2010.. so it wouldn't be feesable till then.

Maybe one for the new stadium eh :disapointed2se:

The Portishead branch was still active as a freight route up and till 1980 so that' probably why not. Also that'd be some gradient to clime.. I'm thinking it'd have to start climing in Portishead to reach the height of the bridge!

Have travelled many a time by train from Chepstow or Severn Tunnel to TM and then walked along Hotwells so a reduced fare scheme would be very welcomed

Not sure I would bother with Parson St though but would be interested if they opened a little halt down by Ship & Castle - where it used to be

100 years ago the Great Western Railway opened Ashton Gate Halt to cater for all the fans travelling not only to there, but also for fans boarding specials to away games. OK I accept it might not be economical to maintain a station for fortnightly use 9 months of the year, but on a Saturday, surely it's feasable for more if not all trains to stop at Parson Street?

norwich have a sceme that match day season ticket holders travel for half price

Be a nice idea for those who use the train to and from the gate on first great western trains

although this scheme was operated last season I don't see any planned alterations this season

Coventry have a station right alongside their new ground. Do they operate a similar scheme or is it just the companies operating to Norwich? In which case Ipswich is also served by the same companies and Portman Road is closer to Ipswich station than Carrow Road is to Norwich. Who knows they may even be EU funding available to encourage <greener> public transport.

Meanwhile, if steam had lasted longer, chek this out!

It does seem strange in the days of fuel prices etc and the fact that there is a trainline across the road from the ground or just down the road from a new ground that thousands of cars have to jamb the roads :disapointed2se:

much as I love me trains(and me planes) we have to be realistic

Portishead line forget it

ashton gate halt forget it

unless we had a train/tram line from parson street to ashton gate,

but with a knew ground

in the offing is it worth it

A new basic railway station cost millions for just nine months of the year

and twice a month

Main line calling points are the way the railway is being run

When we returned from CHARLTON last season there were 400 city fans

on the last london to bristol train

not bad considering 2,000 City fans attended

thats 20 per cent of the fans travelled by train

For the wembley game

There were no football specials

The rail company still coped

3,500 from bristol temple meads and approx 2,500

from bristol parkway

so the railway moved 6,000 city fans

not bad out of a total of 40,000 fans

forty years ago every one used public transport

If we get the new ground built there will be a railway station there (maybe not immediately but SteveL confirmed it's part of the overall plan). Basic stations don't cost millions, they're just lumps of concrete, the line is already there.

Believe me I know a little bit about the railways,

a new basic station does cost millions

If can try to prove a point,I was at weston on sunday just gone

The place was packed, and traffic jams all over weston sea front

Came back to weston station for the 5pm departure back to bristol

There were approx fifty passengers waiting to board the Bristol bound train

and I'l bet quite a few of them were railway staff so very little money

for the railway from its employees

I get the train from highbridge every home game and the train never stops at parson street, it goes straight to tm.

Would be much easier just to get off at ps rather than have to go tm then try and make our way to the gate from there.

The opening of the rail link to Portishead is a real possabilty, North Somerset Council supports the idea. Also Bristol City council is backing the proposal to open a new station at Ashton Gate.

The Station at Ashton gate would also benifit the local community there and also local employers. It would also help people get to Ashton Court for dfferent events.

NTDS please take a look a the freinds of severn beach line you may want to speak to them regarding campaigning to reopen the line.
