Centre Back - We Know We're After One.

When we tabled the bid for Emad's teammate that put us on alert that we were after a centre back.

Since then, Deathly silence on the subject. 0 speculation, no names, no links, no rumours.

So what type do we need, and who's out there we should be after?

Cole skuse had a very good game at centre back last night. I've seen him play in that position for the reserves several times and always thought that he is better there than midfield. We may not need to look elsewhere.

I think a centre back is a necessary signing.

Fonts is injured and that leaves us really two fit centre backs. Carey, whilst superb, is not getting any younger and will miss games through knocks...let alone suspensions! Plus, McCombe struggles on the hard pitches, his last two pre seasons have been hampered with shin splints, so we may not see the best of him until sept/oct. Who does that leave? Keogh? I hope not.

Unfortunately, other than McAuley who has already moved, i have not seen, read or heard any other speculation regarding defensive signings. Someone must have some rumour?? :phone:

Agreed, Skuse is not your typical ball winning centre half, but as 2nd ball centre half he would be great imo.

Should have signed Michael Nelson from Hartlepool a few years ago when we had the chance- very impressed whenever i have seen him and is very highly rated

he is a good league one player, nothing more. makes far too many mistakes and this is probably the reason nobody has taken a chance on him. ironic that the one manager that was constantly linked with him is now managing him at hartlepool

Perhaps we need an experienced head who has played at the top level, would breeze through Championship football but is struggling to get a game with his current club - someone like Linvoy Primus of Portsmouth? Or even Sol Campbell if he is available!!!

i don't want to look an idiot as I'm 99% sure that was said in jest but r u really serious about sol? if so that did make me laugh

...well, if we're being sensible, what about Alessandro Nesta? He's not bad :clapping:

Ever since I saw Skuse make his City debut (at centre-back at home to Colchester was it?) I've thought that his best position lies at centre-back alongside a ballwinner or as a sweeper.

I was in favour of going for Richard Stearman earlier on this summer but he's since joined Wolves. Other than that, I don't think there's many ones that tick all the right boxes out there.

One of the qualities of the centre back is to be a leader as demonstrated last year that without Carey instructing McCombe/Fontaine/Vasko the trio didnt play well together as no of them are leaders - Skuse appears to be mad of exactly the same inability to tell his colleagues what to do and how to do it - Skuse is a good replacement for McCombe and Fontaine but not as a replacement for Carey.

There's always Wilson and Ribeiro.

I guess now we see how highly GJ rates them.

If they're good enough they're old enough, and they'll never develop if they keep getting overlooked. If we're short of specialist defenders, and it looks like we will be with McCombe, Fonts and Keogh possibly out of the reckoning, they should get their chance, imo.

Very impressed with James Wilson last night. Could play as the ball winning centre back next to Carey IMO. Seems to have bulked up since the last time that i saw him play. Riberio played well along side him but would be seen as cover for Louis i would imagine. |Very good at bringing the ball out from defence as well. Think these two have a bright future and maybe this season one or both could make the breakthrough.
