After watching / reading about Cappello's 4321 effort to get Gerrard and Lampard in same team - I was thinking could we play it? if so, who, how etc..

----------------Basso------------

Orr-----Carey--------Fontaine-----McAllister

....Williams----Elliott-------McIndoe

--------Trundle------Noble----------

--------------Maynard-----------------

Any thoughts??

NO WAY! that would be far too attacking equalling into too many goals... and no music to celebrate too! :noexpression:

This is what a number of teams like Manchester United, Chelsea and Portsmouth all us this. I like it but you need to have the right players. From our squad and comparing it to Man United just as an example this is my selection.

Basso / Van Der Sar

Orr/ Brown--------- Carey / Rio-------Fontaine / Vidic------McAllister / Evra

------------Elliott / Carrick-------Johnson / Scholes--------Skuse / Hargreaves

Williams / Ronaldo -------------------------------------- McIndoe / Rooney

-----------------------------------Maynard / Tevez

I Would rather go for

Orr-----Carey--------Webster-----McAllister

....Williams----Elliott-------Johnson

--------Sproule------McIndoe----------

--------------Maynard-----------------

Or even Wilson for Sproule after his performance against Derby. Let Them Charge at the Defence with Pace and if they lose it we have got big marv, LJ and Gav Williams to clean up

Let me get this right... you'd play Wilson as a supporting Striker when he played at Right Back against Derby? I'm glad you're not in charge.

nicky maynard up front on his own? your really taking the piss there.

ball retention- where is our out ball? who is going to hold it up?

nicky maynard is NOT A LONE STRIKER, he doesnt affect games but scores goals(which is ###### brilliant, and i wouldnt change that for the world)

how about, we play 4-4-2 push williams in the middle next to marv and play sproule, noble, murray or wilson right wing?

cor most of you lot take everything far too seriously, i thought this was a discussion forum!! - i wasn't suggesting never playing 442 or anything of the sort, just was thinking if it was ever needed would / could it work and who would be best to play the formation! :disapointed2se::grr:

Not sure about this formation but I would go for

----------------Basso------------

Wilson-----Carey--------Webster-----McAllister

....Johnson----Elliott-------Mcindoe

--------Williams------Trundle----------

--------------Maynard-----------------

why not switch williams with johnson or keep johnson, either would be good imo

and for ball retention and other options why not change maynard with brooker and change gav with maynard?

Everyone knows that a successful team is built around a solid spine. so my formation would be straight down the middle...

---------Basso---------

-----------Orr----------

---------Carey---------

--------Fontaine-------

---------Macca---------

---------Elliott----------

--------Johnson--------

--------Williams--------

--------McIndoe--------

--------Brooker--------

--------Maynard--------

my only slight concern is perhaps a lack of width.

.......baso..........

ORR............CAREY........WEBSTER....FONTAINE

.......SPROULE....ELLIOT..........JOHNSON...MCINDOE...........

..........BROOKER.......MAYNARD...........

SUBS: WEALE

MCALLASTER

WILLIAMS

ADEBOLA / TRUNDLE

SKUSE

I take it you've got Webster in there because McCombe is injured? Yet how come you've got Marvin in there?

4-3-2-1 is when your national manager tries to claim that 4-4-1-1 with a central midfielder playing on the left and right and the link striker playing far too deep really is an attacking formation.

I'd like to get our 4-4-2 working first before messing with things. I thought we looked better with 5 midfielders alst year personally.

Correct, we can play that system when football becomes a non contact, non heading sport. Until then, someone up front needs to be worry the defenders physically.

I would play 4 5 1 if we turned away from 442

451 when we are defending turned quickly into 433 when we were attacking,

my 4 5 1

BASSO

Orr Carey Mccombe Macallister

(webby)

L Johnson Elliott Noble

(Skuse)

Williams Mclindoe

( Trundle)

Maynard

Subs.........Brooker, adebola, sproule, fontain, weale.

You could mix and match the midfield with players playing interchanging roles, plenty of movement..........tuck in 5 midfielders when we defend, 433 when we attack.
