Disgraceful

Seems to me there's this old British disease - maybe it stems from the war when everything was rationed and we were all brought up to be thankful for what we got.

Perhaps the old british 'stiff upper lip' was born from this too and the 'It's not the winning, it's the taking part' tenet.

So now, in modern Britain, we are a bunch of losers - we can't breed decent sportsmen and women because of our culture and more recently the 'politically correct' brigade who decide that there are no losers.

I truly believe this country has lost its will to win and the drive to achieve perfection and it pervades football like a cancer. I am convinced its why we have so many foreign players in our game.

I want to be a winner and I want my team to win and win well, and it frustrates the hell out of me when we under-achieve and then I'm told by others to be thankful for what we have.

When a new football season starts, some teams are just looking to survive! What is that mentality? What is the point in taking part in a competition if you're not in it to WIN it?

We HAVE to be the best we can be, otherwise there's no point.

I dont think many would disagree with you but what has that got to do with booing your team?? does that help us win, engender team spirit or lift morale? what seems to pervade is the quick fix mentality that demands success now or spits its dummy- what's wrong with gradual improvement? we are 5th remember!!

After promotion we finished 6th.

Last year 10th.

We are now in 5th place.

Can you honestly say we have under-achieved?

Well said you I too am fed up with the booing . If you cannot support your team stay away simple really...........

Booing always works!

Booing at halftime reinforces Gary's kick up the a*se speech and results in the team firing on all cylinders in the second half.

Booing at fulltime means the team, perhaps with changes, comes out firing on all cylinders from the start of the next match.

There have been several good examples this season and plenty of examples in previous seasons.

What do I do as a customer? If I am in a restaurant I can walk out if I get lousy food and service.

At Ashton Gate I pay up front but still expect good value and everyone doing their best. If they don't they have broken their contract with me but I have no immediate redress other than to boo and that must be better than not turning up for the next match!

Booing is great and booing always works!!

Crowds are down on last season.

One good reason for this - I bought a ticket for a visiting child on Saturday, aged 11 - it cost £21!! For an 11 year old??? I was told that there was no cheaper rate for this game because it was a category something-or-other match - Sheffield Wednesday??? Surely it would have been cheaper last year? Or does it always cost this much for kids who pay on the day? What's going on??

Its very dangerous for a football club too look on their supporters not as customers but someone who will follow what ever.

If you read the post no one is blaming the players for the none entertaining football being played its down to Johnson tactics or lack of them.

No club is going to come here and roll over but some times we worry to much about other team rather than let them worry about us.

I'm sure the football club values everyone's support. What annoys me is there are lots of people like wookey who say "I'm a paying customer" and expect the world.... We support Bristol City and pay to watch Bristol City, not Man Utd, not Barcelona, but BRISTOL CITY.

see the quote in my sig by Pezo, who sums it up perfectly....

As you previously told me I was thick I thought it important that I check the meaning of 'support' in the Chambers Dictionary in case I misunderstood it.

Included in the definition is 'to endure' 'to make good' 'to supply with a means of living' 'to strengthen'.

It seems that I am pretty good supporter as well as a customer!

Booing is great and booing always works!!

I think its very sad when a fan feels the need to boo his team, there again if it happens then it should be a warning sign to the Club that there is a problem and needs to be addressed.

Sadly, you are probably right.

However, I would rather be a customer/supporter than subservient, accepting whatever the club chose to give me without complaint.

Believe me, I would'nt accept "whatever" the club choose to give me.....

I have not been behind every manager that has managed the club for example... I wanted rid of osman, pulis, benny the clown and unfortunetely tinman come the end.

But the manager we have is doing a amazing job at the moment, and with 6 or 7 new players, I realise that patience is a must and I am confident the style of play will improve...

wookey you make some very good points - to go further the club seems to be doing everything for everyone except the full adult season ticket holder paying in february to renew -

eastend season tickets very cheap

under 16's tickets very cheap

memberships given loyalty similar to ST's

all i've had back from the club is a smaller seat so don't even get to watch the dross in comfort

I've nothing against people venting their opinions and frustrations but I do find it hard to understand why anyone feels it necessary to boo a team that is in it's best postion for some time (in general - not just league position).

I think that to a certain extent Gary Johnson is a victim of his own success and he deserves a little more patience than he is currently getting.

It's not too dissimilar to the situation at Liverpool, in that Benitez led them to their highest ever Premier League points total last season but now it's going wrong, seemingly all and sundry are calling for his head.

I've read a lot of threads like this over the past few days, following on from the PR jobbie GJ did, and I think its a bit more fundamental than some fans being impatient/ungrateful/unrealistic.

Its very possibly that some fans simply do not like GJ as a person, based upon what they see and hear of him.

That's nothing to do with last weeks transfer request rumours incidentally, just the whole situation surrounding his son, the disdain he holds fans in who have a contrary opinion, and the well trodden path of blaming fans or players and rarely himself if things go wrong.

Some people simply don't like him - they are still City fans, and whilst maybe some have booed the whole team, I wonder if the majority of those who did were more selective - just a thought.

Oh and just in case anyone asks - I think GJ is clearly a decent manager but I don't like what I see of him, that's my opinion, and those of a fair few people I socialise with - very probably a tiny majority, but I just raised this because there's lots of debate about why people are so critical and it may be simply that.

Polite responses welcomed

I don't see why liking him or not should be an issue. I neither like nor dislike the guy - I don't know him and have never met him (well, at the open days but that don't count). I do like what he has done for this club and for that I can cut him a lot of slack as far as everything else goes.

I wasn't at the Wednesday game before you ask.
