England Squad, Final 23!

James

Recommended Posts

So the final squad of 23 Capello selected to "bring it home" is as follows:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), David James (Portsmouth), Robert Green (West Ham).

Defenders: Jamie Carragher (Liverpool), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Ledley King (Tottenham), John Terry (Chelsea), Matthew Upson (West Ham), Stephen Warnock (Aston Villa).

Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Joe Cole (Chelsea), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham), James Milner (Aston Villa), Shaun Wright-Philips (Manchester City).

Forwards: Peter Crouch (Tottenham), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham), Emile Heskey (Aston Villa), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United).

What do we all reckon??!! what would you change?!

Genuinly feel for the 7 who won't be on the plane:

- Darren Bent (Sunderland)

- Theo Walcott (Arsenal)

- Adam Johnson (Manchester City)

- Tom Huddlestone (Tottenham),

- Scott Parker (West Ham),

- Michael Dawson (Tottenham),

- Leighton Baines (Everton),

can't imagine how they must feel!

(this 7 is going by the information provided on the BBC live update service aswell as SSN)

EDIT: ALL OF THESE 7 HAVE BEEN/ARE BEING CONFIRMED ONE BY ONE BUT I HOLD IT ON VERY GOOD GROUNDS THAT THIS WILL BE THE 7 "OMITTED" FROM THE SQUAD

Disappointed in Fabio's choice.

Heskey ahead of Bent? I really dont get the fuss over Heskey? I suppose Bent's 24 PL goals count for nothing.

Also feel bad for Theo Walcott but in all honesty he probably is far too inconsistent. On his day though he can terrorize the best full backs.

Also feel we could have done better than Carrick who in my opinion is way over rated.

Would go with that, I think the effect Walcott could have as an impact sub in last 10/15mins of a match against tired legs would be second to none!

Also with Johnson being the only naturally left sided/footed attack minded player maybe there would be an argument that many would have expected him to go as that "different option"

Queue people that only watch England when a major tourny is on moaning about Heskey........

And those who watch every England match and feel holding the ball up well doesn't deserve a place in the squad over BETTER players?

People can slag off Heskey all they like but if you ask our main man who he'd want up there with him out of that lot his answer will always be Heskey has said it publicly more than once .. in order to get anywhere near winning this thing we need Rooney to fire and his best chance will come with Heskey along side him .. glad he's gone as i can go and collect my winnings off my mates now who said he woudn't go ..cheers Fabio .. u just earnt me a few quid :)

SWP over Walcott and Warnock over Baines stands out to me as strange choices.

Not really, Baines blew his chance Vs Mexico and has since openly said he gets homesick when away from home.

Walcott isn't as consistant when compared to SWP, and as there isn't much difference between the two it's no really a shock. I have a feeling SWP will be no more than an impact player anyway.

Agree, Last 10 games Rooney has played WITH Heskey he has scored 9 goals. Last 10 games Rooney has played WITHOUT Heskey he has scored only 2....

Make up your own minds but stats don't lie....

Watch on TV or actually go to the games and see the work off the ball? There's a massive difference.

Agree with you there Moomin ... i said the same thing to mates who dont go to the England games , you have to be there to see the real workrate of players and nobody can doubt Professor Clumps ... :englandsmile4wf:

2 Very different playing styles in truth, If you are looking for that moment of magic and a vital goal most would probably not turn to Heskey wheras Bent is probably more than capeable of providing that.

However, in the 4-4-2 formation we have been playing under Fabio he obviously sees a supporting striker as another valuable club in his bag, Also Heskey's unquestionable physicality is enough to put anyone of their cornflakes... And his link up play, particularly with Rooney (see my post above for stats).

I think we can be rest assured that all factors would all have been weighed up by the man who has taken us to these finals and i'm sure he would not have made this decision lightly.

I dont doubt he works hard and I agree he's a decent player. Just feel we have better striker/s (Bent IMO) who warrant a place ahead of Heskey.

I agree that Bent is a better striker, but that's not the role Heskey fills, which is why Bent isn't going.

Don't forget Defoe is in great form for England and will be the other specialised goalscorer alongside Rooney in the squad.

Agreed Bent and Heskey play very different roles as strikers.

Bent hasn't exactly impressed for England, just feel he is more capable than Heskey when it comes to scoring goals.

Easy. He is a striker who scores and creates more goals. Better.

In the Premier League Bent has undoubtedly proved himself as a quality goalscorer this season, I for 1 have fully backed his inclusion in the Final squad of 23!

Please understand I was not disagreeing with you in the fact that Bent deserved a place in the 23. I was simply stating that England's goalscoring record (Wayne Rooney's inparticular) is statistically proven to be higher when Heskey is included due to the work he does both on and off the ball, therefore I do understand Fabio's decision to include the big man.

Whether it was the right decision to include him INSTEAD OF Bent is another matter.

Fair enough mate. All a matter of opinion.

You could argue Bent has barely been given a chance for England?

Completely agree, as I said in last post I have been one of Bents biggest fans in terms of backing him for the place, had he been given the chance earlier in the season when his goalscoring ability was becoming further apparent I have no doubt in saying his chances of making the cut would have been hugely increased, unfortunately for him both Defoe and Rooney hit scintillating form at roughly the same time.

slightly suprised huddlestone and dawson left out.

probably two of the most in form players and i believe dawson is much better than upson.

also carrick had a poor game against mexico and huddlestone gives you that variety that no-one else gives you.

I get the impression that Capello is playing the "experience" card in these instances, although as you say it is undeniable that Huddlestone and Dawson are the players coming into this on high form for Spurs, both Upson and Carrick have 25+ caps for England and have both done well during those apearances.

I think this World Cup has come round just a bit to soon for Dawson and Huddlestone.

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), David James (Portsmouth), Robert Green (West Ham).

No complaints there - the best three currently available.

Defenders: Jamie Carragher (Liverpool), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Ledley King (Tottenham), John Terry (Chelsea), Matthew Upson (West Ham), Stephen Warnock (Aston Villa).

Again, no real complaints there but moderately suprised Warnock is chosen over Baines. Other than that relatively good.

Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Joe Cole (Chelsea), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham), James Milner (Aston Villa), Shaun Wright-Philips (Manchester City).

Suprised on the inclusion of Wright-Phillips. I personally didn't feel he looked up to the level - then again Walcott has been below par. I genuinely thought Walcott would get the nod though.

Forwards: Peter Crouch (Tottenham), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham), Emile Heskey (Aston Villa), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United).

I am still unconvinced of the merits of Heskey. I personally would've gone with Darren Bent.

- Darren Bent (Sunderland) Should be on the plane imo

- Theo Walcott (Arsenal) as should theo

- Adam Johnson (Manchester City) not really seen enough of him to say he should be in the squad. Probably the right call on this one.

- Tom Huddlestone (Tottenham), Can't believe he made the original 30 tbh. No where near world class.

- Scott Parker (West Ham), Not good enough for final 23

- Michael Dawson (Tottenham), Probably had a fair case to be included. Quite Unlucky I feel.

- Leighton Baines (Everton), Not shone in an England shirt, maybe finding the step up a bit beyond him. I would've liked to have seen more from him but I guess that's how it goes sometimes.
