Doubt it's a lucky charm, more likely just a practical barrier to protect his bald pate from the sun. His son lives in America doesn't he, could be a present from him? Perhaps he was already living in the States and didn't want to move back to the UK? Perhaps he's studying something very specialist which that university does very well?
