The Batman
sorry if said above but Carroll is now the most expensive Englishman in football history with regards to a transfer fee. What a joke this sport / business has become. as well as 8th most expensive transfer fee ever. would have been 7th had it not been for Torres to Chelsea. miketh2nd
According to these players valuations throughout the window - Forlan 9m, Fabiano 18m, benzema 20m - they could in theory have had any 2 of these.... Crazy stuff! Chelsea have now spent in excess of 70m in one day completing deals for Torres 50m & David Luiz 20m... CRAZZZYY!!! "Chelsea FC plc today announced that results for the financial year end June 30, 2010 show the group had become cash positive for the first time since its acquisition by Roman Abramovich." yeah didn't last long did it..... miketh2nd
sorry if said above but Carroll is now the most expensive Englishman in football history with regards to a transfer fee. What a joke this sport / business has become. it sure is ridiculous, fair enough Torres's price is a little inflated but do you blame Liverpool for squeezing chelsea to all their worth with the amount of money they have. Then fair enough for spending 23 million on Suarez he scored 111 goals in 159 appearances. His scoring ratio for Uruguay is one goal in every three internationals, having scored 10 times in 30 games, including three goals in last summer's World Cup. If Carroll was bought in the summer and Liverpool hadn't just gained 50 million you'd probably seen Carroll to be sold from around 15 million to 18 million depending if he kept up his scoring record up. CiderHider
sorry if said above but Carroll is now the most expensive Englishman in football history with regards to a transfer fee. What a joke this sport / business has become. Have to agree, this made Suttons £10m to Chelsea deal look a sweet piece of business. Well anyway, this clearly puts Maynard's price up considerably, defacto.
megansdad
All in the timing - Newcastle took advantage of the squeeze Liverpool were in having sold Torres. Liverpool could afford to pay a daft price because they got a similarly daft price from Chelsea - there the fault is only partially Sky the advent of billionaire trophy owners is perhaps more the issue. Delighted we seem to have done some very sensible work in the transfer window. A real left sided player something we have craved for a long time and a timely replacement for Stead, which allows NM who's value has increased substantially to be eased back to playing rather than rushed. We need to ensure he has the time he needs to fully recover rather than to be rushed back as he might have been had wenot replaced Stead. The loan provides Millen with a low risk look at Keogh so makes good financial sense as well. Can't understand people moaning that we did not do x and y, namely recruit a left back or a creative midfielder - hopefully our attack will be more creative with an option left and right, while the defence can be improved over time. Let's be happy with what we have and that we did not get into the same trap as Liverpool.
bucksred
I think him and Wilshire are the future of the England team , maybe Kenny see's the same with Carroll, but £35m is questionable only time will tell. you forgot Caulker in that

Mr Popodopolous
On the comparison to say Maynard, Chopra or anyone else who outperformed Carroll last year for that matter- here is an interesting counterargument: http://www.talksport.co.uk/radio/drivetime/blog/2011-02-01/durhams-rant-why-%C2%A335m-carroll-bargain It's true enough, you can't just measure in goals. He could also have made the point that Carroll is younger so greater potential than say Chopra who has already played in the topflight a few times and not done a huge amount. Wouldn't call Carroll a bargain at all though!
Judge Roughneck
If Andy Carroll is worth £35 million what is Nicky Maynard worth, they were pretty much on par with each other last season. Nicky's got to be at least worth £25 hasn't he? You are only worth what someone is prepared to pay for you. Seeing as its 9 months since Maynard played a competitive game and he has had a serious knee injury, he's worth absolutely Jack Shite
