Maynard Contract

Surely we should have put a contract extension in front of Nicky whilst he was off crocked.

With only 1 year left can only see him leaving on the cheap (compareed to what we could have got if he was tied in) in the summer as doubt he will sign an extension now.

Seems a major mistake for someone as financially astute as SL.

But if, as was speculated on here, there was a chance that Maynard might not come back (and who knew what sort of played we'd be getting back), surely it is just as big a risk in giving someone with a long-term injury a new deal?

Exacty right.

There was no guarantee that Maynard would recover from his serious knee injury and even now he's played less than 5 games since his return. Hopefully he's on the road to a full recovery but theres still a chance his injury could break down again.

The club would have looked s bit stupid if they'd given Maynard a new, improved contract when he was out and then he didn't recover.

Exactly, we aren't to know whether he has or hasn't had new contract negotiations yet.. but with the activity this season with strikers seems to me sadly he's on his way..

He hasn't.

Maynard said that he's not even thinking about it yet as its still a year away during his post match interview.

Don't remember you posting this when NM was still off injured?

But its easy to say now

People would have absolutely slated the club for offering a badly injured player (and also one of the highest earners) a long contract extension while he was still injured

All that needs to be said is.......Steve Brooker

Im pretty sure had he been fit, contract negotiations would of started before the Jan transfer window. Id like to think that all parties have agreed to see how Nicky comes back from a serious injury before any contracts are offered or signed. Hopefully its all in hand and a new contract will be offered and signed either before the season is out or just after.

Or Dean Ashton, or a whole host of players who have never recovered (or fully recovered). Hindsight is a wonderful thing but if there is one thing that really grinds me about this forum is people trying to slate the club after the event. SL etc might be financially astute but they unable to tell the future.

What would you be saying in a years time if we had a situation whereas NM had only scored half a dozen goals, was only able to play 1 in 3 games and was worth a can of coke and a bag of chips with 3 years left on a £10k a week contract?

Truth is, nobody knew that he would come back as good (if not better) than he was before. And if you did then you need to be sending your CV to the club c/o SL and asking for a right wedge.

The timing of Nicky's injury was doubly unfortunate - we missed our most important player for six months and missed the obvious window of opportunity to get him on an extended contract. You could argue in retrospect that he should have been offered a new deal last May after his fantastic season, but the change of manager (twice) meant that was less likely to happen.

If he's the decent human being I believe him to be, he will sign a new deal in the summer with a release clause if he gets a Prem team seriously offering him first team football.

Indeed, the important thing is to get contract talks going now, if he's happy to stay and willing to sign at for least another 12months then Happy days, if their is some doubt, give him until May to decide fully and if it's a no sale him in the summer for best possible fee.

I think you could be right and have mentioned this before.

The fact is if Nicky was not coming back the club had to bring in strikers and if he was the likliehood was we would be entertaining offers. It seems the management did the right thing to cover all eventualities by bringing in Pitman and Stead.

I think it is probable that Nicky will sign a contract extension with us as this will keep his value up and by no means stops a sale if a Newcastle, Liverpool or Everton (yesterdays press) come in for him at a significant price point!

almost all league clubs don't start contract talks until there is about 1 to 1 and a half years to go,

He'll sit down after the season and if nothing is sorted will be put up for sale

its the way most clubs work,

Its then down to how much another club wants him
