On the one hand there's a player who played for England, turned down Chelsea and AC Milan (I believe the price would have made him the most expensive player of his era) to play for us all while he was just a semi - professional! Big john was a teacher first a footballer 2nd. You cannot compare the two and it would be stupid to do so. Let's not forget john also left a club to join us, for no fee, that club being Portsmouth.
