We Could Have Signed Bert Trautmann

Just started reading an autobiography of his, is a great read. Anyway, when he was working in Bristol for a while he met up with two friends and former POW's Alec Eisentrager and Karl Krause (played in City reserves) who told him to come along to training. Krause asked the manager if Trautmann could go in a goal for a bit but was told no! Trautmann went on to sign for Man City the next season and become one of their all time greats. Trautmann says he wonders how life would have turned out if he'd played for us instead of Man City!

It's amazing who City have failed to sign over the years.

In "The complete history of Bristol City FC" it staes that Fred Ford tried and failed to sign Robin Stubbs (Torquay), Barry Dyson (Palace), Frank Large (Oldham), Alan Hinton (Forest) and....Alan Skirton (Blackpool).

Alan Dicks did sign Skirton, but AD was 2nd choice for City Manager. Harry DOlman wanted Frank O'Farrell who was Torquay manager. He refused to come though as Fred Ford was a friend of his. A few years later O'Farrel became manager at Man U.

Mike Summerbee the Man City player in the 60s had been in City's youth team but was released. Skirton had also once been on City's books as an amateur, but was also released.

Alan D also tried siging John Tudor from Newcastle, but failed.

Picking up on other recent forum threads....At the end of Dicks' first season when relegation had been avoided, Barry Watling and Geoff Merrick were given their 1st team debuts and City won 4-2 at Villa. Mike Mahoney the youth goalie made his debut in the final game of the season.

Around about 1964ish dear old Harry Dolman told Fred Ford to go out and sign Mike Summerbee and Ernie Hunt from Swindon who at the time had a great side including Bobby Woodruff the original long throw expert, Fred was a bottler in the transfer market he could have had them both for a combined fee of £45k and given the side we already had at the time who knows what the outcome would have been.

I also recall we once had a player called Johnny Crosson on trial who went to great success at Sunderland and Man City, a Northern Irish international, but not good enough for us.

and didn't we miss out on Trevor Francis because we wouldn't buy his old man a car?.

It was 9 or 10 years later before we signed Ernie Hunt, another star of our great FA cup win at Leeds.
