Spoke to him at the Taylor v Dudbridge World final a few years back , top man. A few of his classic quotes

“Keith Deller is like Long John Silver – he’s badly in need of another leg.”

“The atmosphere is so tense, if Elvis walked in ,with a portion of chips……. you could hear the vinegar sizzle on them”

"Only one word for that - magic darts"

“That was like throwing three pickled onions into a thimble!”

What did he check-out at?

72. Shanghai on 12's.

Seriously, a sad loss. When Sid was first heard on darts commentary he was considered to a dim wit who couldn't construct a sensible sentence. He was in fact a clever bloke who spent much of his early working life in academia having graduated from Cambridge no less.

RIP to the finest sports commentator/pundit EVER.

Who would of thought he came out of Oxford university with a first class degree in philosophy!

Cambridge in Modern History actually, but yes, a very clever man. He had a real way with words.

My mate Barry knew him as he was a housemate of Sid's son at university.

Once Barry asked Sid if he thought Eric Bristow would ever come out of his long period of darts inactivity.

"The pterodactyl in winter," replied Sid enigmatically and walked off.

Who but Waddell would tie together Bristow's darter nickname (on account of the distinctive schnozz) with King Henry II's travails as described in The Lion In Winter.
