Kingswood Robin
Thank you for posting this. That was a very special season. We'd only just survived going out of business, 3 consecutive relegations and then this season came along. We turned Rovers over in their own back yard in the cup and won at home nearly every week and finally won promotion. Terry Cooper was putting together a side that played good football but he knew the importance of the results and had to call on everything at his disposal. A 40 year Cooper on the left wing, Geography students in midfield, centrebacks playing up front etc, etc. I'll never forget the pitch invasion at the end of the Swindon game. No mobiles back in those days, we all stood on the pitch quietly waiting for the results from the other games over the tannoy to see if we'd done it. BCAGFC
Aaaah the memories. Can remember a Doncaster home game (might have been the one in that vid) when both sets of gates on the Park End were left open before KO and we couldn't believe our luck. Slowly made our way into their side in 1s & 2s and then had a right little battle with the 30 or so Donny fans until the old bill realised their mistake. Not sure why we didn't get nicked for it, just escorted around the pitch into the EE. Those were the days. BCAGFC
Red
See, I don't remember it that way. I thought Chester away was the last match of the season and clinched it there! i thought that was our clincher match, and remember the now infamous Andy Llewellyn having his shirt etc ripped off him. 3 parts of the ground City? We could have gone up by beating Swindon. Aldershot had to lose though. We all stood on the pitch waiting to hear they'd lost but they didn't! So you're right Chester away was the clincher. Eco
How many pens did we get ! Fantastic vid, nice to see footage of Alan Crawford, Jon Economou(briefly), Bobby Hutch playing for Tranmere, John Shaw's save against Darlington. Wonderful memories. sglosbcfc
When I think back now how utterly embarrassing, a massive City like Bristol having a team in the basement division at least it was only once in our history and for two seasons. Surely it couldn't happen now to a Bristol team......
DT The Optimist
Something for the oldies.. Fantastic post ! When I see comments on here and else where about how bad we are now, I wonder what they would have thought about standing in the old enclosure on a wet winter night when we lost 0 1 at home to Torquay United to go bottom of the 4th. In front of just under 3000 fans, I think our lowest ever league gate. But the climb back and getting promoted at Chester a year or so later is another high point. glynriley
Cheers for that Lew T. Some great memories of that team , and the chance to relive some of the magic moments provided by my schoolboy hero , Mr Glyn Riley esq. What a player. Yes, cos they got chased out of the ground at the final whistle, we had the main side stand and a terrace ( if you could call it that)at one end. In front of the main stand was a wire fence about 6 ft high,City fans undid it in the last 10 mins, without the OB noticing That paved the way for the big final whistle pitch invasion. I remember being on the side on the gravel and the dust we kicked up was like a sandstorm! I can't remember if they had anyone sent off, I expect there is someone on here who would know though. But now that you say it,I seem to remember a dust cloud! I can still picture the stand, it was like the Dolman was before we had the bottom filled in. What a great day that was, good memories
HIGHRIDGE BCFC
Ah,the dulcet tones of the late Ian Seymour. Always struck me as a likeable buffoon reminiscent of Nigel Bruce's portrayal of Dr.Watson. I remember the next year he was out on the pitch trying to time Walshys shots. Anyway, great to watch those highlights of what was my first season of regular away days.
