World Cup Play Offs

It's crazy that teams such as Portugal, France, Ukraine or Sweden might not be there when the mighty Honduras will be.

Obviously it is the World cup and there needs to be teams from around the world there but surely all the best teams also need to be there.

Will be very funny if in 2022 Qatar qualify by virtue of hosting and a real massive powerhouse like Brazil, Argies, Spain or Germany fail to qualify.

Easy to pick holes in the qualification process but there are not really many alternative suggestions other than further European weighting.

This is the problem though- is it heavily weighted for European teams?.

From South America- Brazil qualified as hosts. 4 out of 9 automatically qualify and Uruguay will more than likely dispatch Jordan in the intercontinental playoffs.

From Central America 3 out of 6 automatically qualify and another could get through in the intercontinental playoffs.

9 European teams automatically qualify from 53 teams. Then 4 in the playoffs..

Just because there are more European teams doesn't mean it is particularly weighted in their favour. It is more a feat to qualify from Europe than any other continent imo.

The best teams will be, by virtue of winning their group.

Romania had a great era up until about 2000, ok they didn't win anything vut were generally rather good! Hagi etc. Would be good to see them back but in a way, if only Turkey got 2nd, would have been a real ferocious 2 legged game Greece-Turkey for a place in WC! No love lost there...

Would say France, Greece, Portugal, Croatia to go through though none of them really nailed on.

Wouldn't have happened! It's usually rigged.

Obviously, but their group was large so more than one qualified. I meant the best European teams. If France or Portugal couldn't win their group then they are no longer among the best teams in Europe, let alone the world.

You are of course right- I always forget that they have several rounds before the final group stage in the central America pot.

Still doesn't change the fact that France and Portugal are better teams and I would want as many of the better teams there as possible.

Australia have made the finals several times. They do so by beating the likes of Guam and Tahiti.

It has been suggested that in this day& age of jet transport, FIFA could do away with continent based qualifying groups and have all nations liable to be in a pool with any other nation. The only deciding factor would be as now, current standings in FIFA's list.

Getting to a play off game, according to "The Telegraph" even took the Icelanders themselves by surprise. Sunderland has a bigger population than Iceland.

To be fair, didn't they ask to be moved into the Asia group to make their qualification harder and thus test them more (competition improves the breed philosophy)

As for me, I'd really like Iceland to get there simply because they'd be a breath of fresh air rather than the stale old French/Portuguese/Sweden, etc.  Like with New Zealand last time, everyone got behind them simply because their being there was kind of amusing.
