Aizoon
Bit of a needle match there. Am I right in thinking that Oxford were initially voted into the FL at the expense of Gateshead?
'Orns
Not sure about that, bit before my time The Gateshead manager had a right pop about Oxford's playing style after the first game, and with Wilder getting an approach from Pompey it sets it up for an interesting game

22A
Nope, took the place of A Stanley. Correct. Accrington were replaced in the League by Oxford. Then a few years ago, quite by coincidence, Accrington regained League status as Oxford dropped into the Conference.

'Orns
Right. Who was it replaced Gateshead, then? Peterboro if t'interweb is to be believed.....'The club had applied for re-election only once before in a relatively successful 30-year period, but were unceremoniously cast aside in favour of the more geographically favourable Peterborough United in 1960.' Yes, geography had a lot to do with it. Both Barrow and Workington were tossed out at the first opportunity. It needed WWII to save the Gas, though

And Newcastle United's representative voted for Gateshead to get the boot, very neighbourly. Yet sadly 95% plus of the football fans in Gateshead support the team across The Tyne.
