Doesn't work quite so well, but where disrespect is concerned, try fighting smart arse comments with even smarter ones. I long remember a story Ron Atkinson tells about a player who stormed into his office and demanded to know why he was sub for the reserves. His self importance as a player was cut down in one line by Ron with "Well, we've had a lot of injuries" (the suggestion being, if it wasn't obvious, that he's actually punching above his weight to be in the position he considers so beneath him). Shorey's poor as a left-sided midfielder [another SOD blunder he was loathe to fix] but is a solid, if unspectacular, left-back. Calling him shit and garbage is out-of-order IMO.
