I was with West Ham with my West 'ammmm loving friend in the Eastville Open End in 1980 . The following week West Ham beat Arsenal at Wembley to win the FA Cup. West Ham had a great side then including Phil Parkes, Trevor Brooking and Frank Lampard (Senior). There were Gas on the M32 throwing rubble down at us and the fencing to the pitch was lined with Special Patrol Group Police - many with dark glasses and attack dogs. Happy Days. :D

Was that the game a few City lads went in the North enclosure? Me and another City mate went with 2 other mates, one WHU and one G*s. We were there as City lads took this piss out the West ham boys then , eventually g*s came in the back. Interesting game , haven't got a clue what the score was !

Err, that might have been our little lot chucking the rubble, sorry about that, in my defence we were only about 16 at the time :)

I saw a West ham lad take what I thought was a right hiding from 4 Rovers lads who just left them on the floor, when they walked off he just stood up, brushed himself down and walked away!

The first one was a night game, I was there, I wouldn't have been if City were playing. They totally destroyed the Tote and smashed every window in the South Stand when eventually being escorted to the Muller Rd.

We definitely did have them on a night game and on a Saturday. The Saturday was when they were all over the Tote, and the police took horses onto the terraces to form a barrier between both sets of fans.

It was, actually, a good game if I remember right. 0-1 to the 'ammers? I don't know how West Ham managed to get relegated to the Gas ridden Div 2 of the day as they were a very good footballing side - Trevor Brooking was a great footballer and Phil Parkes was a great goalie - they both played for England at that time? They won the FA Cup the following week as the last second tier club ever to do so. The Police had their Special Patrol Group deployed at the away end - so they were expecting trouble and well up for trouble themselves? Apart from some stone throwing I don't remember any trouble.

So, out of just 11 games with Chelsea, the Gas have beaten Chelsea 3 times. This sounds good until you remember that those 11 games now span well over a hundred years of league and FA Cup history. Where have the Gas been all those years? Well, in the lower league divisions or knocked out of the Cups in the very early rounds. You're going to have to get top flight football or do well in the Cup competitions to meet Chelsea again.

Pot, kettle, black :)

I have seen us beat Chelsea a couple of times, in fact I have seen us beat most current Premier league teams ,(I suspect most City fans my age could say the same) however, I am under no illusions that I am going to see it again any time soon!

I think you're being too modest, MD. You lot'll get a few wins in the Skrill Premier - don't you worry, me babber....

OK, but we were the last Bristol side to beat Chelsea and that was in the FA Cup circa 1990. ;)

I remember it well, you needed one of our rejects to get the win that day :)

I think it will be a long time before either Bristol club are playing teams like Chelsea on a regular basis again.

Within ten years in a league game at the UWE Stadium but you won't like it Miah and neither will the majority of City and Rovers fans.

The upgraded Ashton Gate will make a lovely rugby ground.

I would probably have done the same if I were that West Ham lad and taken the beating. If he had fought back it would probably have been him arrested by the Bristol Police and he probably would have missed the FA Cup final the following Saturday !!!!!!

I clearly remember chatting to a West Ham veteran supporter on the Eastville Open End during the game and he was full of how England won the World Cup with West Ham players. He'd been to the 1964 and 1975 West Ham winning Cup finals and he told me how they were going to beat Arsenal and to have a bet on West Ham. I wish I'd taken notice of him because West Ham went on to beat Arsenal as rank outsiders.

As an afterthought, I'm actually saddened by the demise of both City and the Gas since 1980 - both clubs now a full 2 divisions below where they were at the start of 1980.
