How Many Points Needed For Promotion ?

A few dogs are always early out of the traps.

Quite often they seem to run out of steam.

Would love to know if anyone (who has more time on their hands than me) could come up with a stat which would give an indication as to how many of the teams who are top at this stage go on to automatic promotion.

Reality check needed this morning!

ALL DEPENDS ON IF ENOUGH OF US ARE PREPARED TO FOLLOW OUR GLORIOUS LEADER IN A SHEDMAN RITUAL....

Requires SHEDMAN to lead us in a collective Ritual ASHTON HUM (approx 15seconds duration) whilst simultaneously slowly raising our Right Arms with Index Fingers upwardly Pointing to the sky in the direction of our spiritual home of Ashton Vale... (this vast area of immense earthbound energy harnesses great powers important specifically to ShedHeads as the sun rises and sets over it) .... The more POINTING SHEDHEADS who participate in this Shed Man led Ritual the more powerful & spectacular an event it can become... SHED MAN , SHED MAN GIVE US A SIGN!!!

Its said when the Shed-Man cometh and leadeth the masses in the 'Ritual Of TEN-THOUSAND Pointing (& humming) Shed-Heads ' that goals and points will come together and Promotion will follow.

Always Believe.. - watch the SHED-MAN and be ready to follow in the Pointy Shed-Led Hum Ritual when ShedMan decrees it and PROMOTION Will Be Visited Upon The Gate ...

COYR's - ALWAYS BELIEVE. :)

A good point.  A quick check of the last four seasons on statto.com shows this:

2013/14 - auto-promoted = Wolves, Brentford. positions after 8 games = 3rd and 10th respectively (1st was Leyton Orient)

2012/13 - auto-promoted = Doncaster, Bournemouth. positions after 8 games = 12th and 17th respectively (1st was Tranmere)

2011/12 - auto-promoted = Charlton, Shef Wed. positions after 8 games = 1st and 9th respectively.

2010/11 - auto-promoted = Brighton, Southampton. positions after 8 games = 1st and 18th respectively

So in conclusion, we are far far away from any kind of guaranteed promotion.

Sit down, calm down and enjoy this beautiful little moment.

If you want to know where the team top after 8 games finished then go to the website yourself (clue - in the past two seasons it wasn't 1st or second)

Last year it was 94, but that was a bit of a freak.

Generally if you get 90 or more then it's all but guaranteed, 85 or more and you've got a decent chance.

Check this link for the history of the league http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/league-one/honours

Also, yes, you are getting carried away!

1 more then 3rd place

Using Monkeh's refinement (technically of course, it's same points & GD with one more goal scored) then

13/14: 87

12/13: 80

11/12: 91

10/11: 88

09/10: 86

08/09: 88

07/08: 81

06/07: 84

05/06: 77

04/05: 80

so in the last 10 years, 85 would not have been enough for Auto promotion in five of them - and in one season 90 wasn't quite enough to be a point clear of third.

A difference there is that Orient and Tranmere were not expected to do well and were overperforming to be at the top.  Charlton and Brighton were expected to be up at the top as were we by the bookies pre-season.  There is a long way to go but I don't think we've fluked our way to the top and barring an injury crisis or horrible loss of confidence, think we have a good chance of staying there.
