Generally if you get 90 or more then it's all but guaranteed, 85 or more and you've got a decent chance. A quick check of the last four seasons on statto.com shows this: 2013/14 - auto-promoted = Wolves, Brentford. positions after 8 games = 3rd and 10th respectively (1st was Leyton Orient) 2012/13 - auto-promoted = Doncaster, Bournemouth. positions after 8 games = 12th and 17th respectively (1st was Tranmere) 2011/12 - auto-promoted = Charlton, Shef Wed. positions after 8 games = 1st and 9th respectively. 2010/11 - auto-promoted = Brighton, Southampton. positions after 8 games = 1st and 18th respectively So in conclusion, we are far far away from any kind of guaranteed promotion. Sit down, calm down and enjoy this beautiful little moment. Charlton and Brighton were expected to be up at the top as were we by the bookies pre-season. There is a long way to go but I don't think we've fluked our way to the top and barring an injury crisis or horrible loss of confidence, think we have a good chance of staying there.
