wayne allisons tongues
See the bookies have stopped taking bets on her abdicating. Anything in this? I think it's not true but if so, would like Charles to step aside and let William straight through to throne for some stability.
RedM
Not really interested in nothing royal, except Harry, but she has always said she would never abdicate. I can't see her changing her mind unless she or Phillip are in really poor health. She will be Queen to the end but will seldom be seen I expect. wayne allisons tongues
How would Charles taking the crown destabilise the monarchy? I personally think, he is the kind of person who wouldn't follow the diplomatic path. Has his own thoughts and ideas and just think he will upset quite a few people. Also being married to Camilla I think wouldn't go down to well in some commonwealth countries. He's in his 60s now and not sure if having a older king is really the way to go, whilst William about 30 has a long future in front of him. Just my thoughts on it, maybe totally wrong but how I see it.
Barrs Court Red
Charles being king worries me. I like having a royal family. I think it makes the UK different, encourages tourism and adds some prestige. That works because they stay out of politics. I don't think Charles would. nebristolred
She won't be abdicating this Christmas I'm sure of it. For one, we'd find out hours before the Christmas speech as it's shown in the other British territories with a large time difference, not sure she'd want that. Welcome To The Jungle
Charles would be the oldest person to ascend to the throne already. I think the crown skipping a generation would be good in this case. Wills and Kate are very popular in most of the world and seem very mature, down to earth yet very aware of the world. I still believe that with the death of the Queen will lead the the collapse of the commonwealth as I believe Australia, NZ and Canada will all become republics. Aussie
Australia would become a Republic if Charles became King no question. I grew up in NSW and the last referendum failed in no small part because of the personal stability and respect that Queen Elizabeth has with all of the people. Even the most ardent Republican out there will tell you they hold the Queen herself in considerable respect, they just dont think she should be head of state of Australia. Malcolm Turnbull - who is in the Government - and led the last campaign said whilst the Queen remained in charge there was no point in another vote. However Charles is absolutely not held in the same regard whatsoever. William is actually popular in Australia - as is Kate - so it is less foregone conclusion if he became King how Australia would vote.

GrahamC
Saw them at The Hippodrome in 1977, fantastic show. As for Prince Charles, he scares me to death, he has bonkers views and is clearly already hugely influential, seeing as he's gone to court to stop the letters he's written ever being seen by the public. He also claims all the money from the wills of every tenant of his who dies intestate, does that strike you as a suitable king? It sounds more like something out of the Middle ages to me. Charles' Coronation, big tourist event, boost to the economy, pops his clogs a few years later, William's coronation, another big tourist event, another big boost to the economy. Surprised Dave isn't slipping something into her tea to speed it all up.

But my preference is Wills

zyderiup
Heard this earlier on the radio ga ga. Don't stop me now but I want to break free from the whole monarchy thing when another one bites the dust. Charlie isn't exactly popular and his reign will be over in a flash and although the show must go on, William has only just found somebody to love and really doesn't need to be under pressure, I mean, these are the days of our lives and you may say "who wants to live forever" but I have this crazy little thing called love for BCFC and I am more interested in watching them until we are the champions. I know it sounds like I want it all but really I just want a kind of magic so I can tie your mother down with the love of my life and some fat bottomed girls. Aizoon
Hmm. Edward VII was deeply unpopular as Prince of Wales and proved to be a remarkably effective king. Going back just a little further, Henry V was the same...
Robbored
Who cares whether she abdicates or not? The Royals are a privelideged family of German/Greek origins and these days are not much more than tourist attractions. The Yanks love 'em because they don't have a royal family. Years ago Princess Diane visited by local town and when I got home from work I couldn't park because my road was cordoned off by the police for 'security reasons'. The place she was visiting was at least 1.5 miles away. I was really pissed off.

Yep, Prince Charles blathers on about green issues but has been happily concreting over green fields in Cornwall for years to make himself a few quid. I do not want to see a total hypocrite on the throne; it would be such a shock after Queen Elizabeth, who along with Prince Philip has given a lifelong devotion to public service.
