What you have to realise about the BBC is it's all about executives protecting their own little empires. In a time of falling real income, BBC3 was squished so BBC1 could protect the expensive shite it produces. The News website is about to undergo a similar horrible downgrade, because it's been effectively taken over by the more powerful News Channel ( in the guise of "continuous news").
