Ivorguy
Sad to read he passed away recently aged 81. The brother of the more famous John One of the very best players I have seen at Ashton Gate, playing centre half for Swansea. A real quality act and a gentleman Sad to read in his obituary that he found himself broke on retirement from football Excellent obituary in today's Times. RIP Mel, and I am so pleased to remember you playing, a real treat
spudski
I met John Charles once briefly at a Juventus game in Torino. Lovely Gentleman. They treated him like a God when I was there. Met Phil Neville the same day and not one person knew who he was
reddevon
RIP Mel. Met him in a pub in Sketty , Swansea after playing cricket there about 20 years ago. Perfect unassuming gentleman who didn't mind a chat about football!

Met Phil Neville the same day and not one person knew who he was Legend is applied to any average player who hangs around for 5 minutes these days but John Charles achieved justified legend status in 2 countries. Still revered in Italy to this day. Must have been quite something to meet him.

Happy to say that the balance is wrong now in terms of player's wealth, but it was also too far the other way then, too..
