Joe, I don't mean this to come across as patronising.. but am I right in saying that you're American and only just started following us relatively recently? (Which I think is great btw)

Perhaps that's why you seem a bit more surprised at events/hostility at Cardiff than the rest of us. It's very normal for these games and matches vs Rovers are far worse.

It's quite possible. American sporting events are fun but they do lack the passion. I really enjoy it for the most part but last night was a bit far. Look, I'm ok with it but my misses often comes along who is English so it probably doesn't bother her as much but she doesn't and I don't need people jumping on us just to spout things to other fans that can't hear them. By all means jump around when we score but have a bit of respect otherwise. That bit is secondary though. The fighting and fireworks definitely not on and I want to go to Cardiff again. I want to go to every ground but I don't it to be a hassle to do so. I'm sure many others feel the same. There's a difference between passion and stupidity and what I saw and heard, the line was crossed several times.

No it's fine. All I've said is what I saw and heard last night which was embarrassing. Maybe it was just where I was sat. I've not been to another away game nearly as embarrassing as that. Talk of punching stewards and police like it's some sort of badge of honour. Setting fireworks off and throwing them around. Childish behaviour and as I've said it was probably only 100 or so causing the trouble but it looks bad as a whole. Then you wonder why places like Cardiff and Birmingham have uncomfortable police presences that make it more uncomfortable for everyone else. It's a shame really.

Fair enough Joe, don't let it put you off for future games though

American sporting events have their fair share of violence as well, being an NFL fan seen quite a bit with stabbings, punch-ups and so on splashed across youtube. These are not isolated incidents either

I did the Wembley tour a couple of weeks back, just before the NFL game that was there recently. Our guide said that NFL players would often have fights in the tunnels, so bad they had to have separate tunnels for each team now at most grounds. He said they were going to do this st Wembley too, bring the players onto the pitch from different corners. I don't know if this happened as I didn't watch it.

No doubt they do and it's appalling then. I grew up in Philadelphia and am a massive Eagles fan. No way would I travel to see them play the Redskins who've been known to do it but NFL was a rarity for me so maybe a similar culture to football here. I would never dare say one set of people is worth than another though. Just didn't like what I saw last night. If I was going with a few mates I'd probably care less about my surroundings but I have to be mindful of my misses and not getting caught up in trouble as I am here on a visa. It won't put me off going but it may put my misses off which might mean not going. Or taking my son when he visits. Took him to West Brom last year and was hostile but didn't feel unsafe for him. I could tell my misses wasn't comfortable though. Just thought last night a few got too carried away.

No was right in the middle. It's ok though. I understand now. It's away at Cardiff so it's ok for people to get into your personal space and climb on you shout and spit all over you in a drunken state. All in the name of football. Good one. Is that exceptable when you go out for a meal or the cinema? No it isn't and it isn't on for a football match either. There is passion and there is being an ass. This was the latter. I know the difference. Shame you and many others can't see it but it's why there are restrictions and people get bans. It's why people can't make it to matches because of the stigma of football fans that they get swept away and escorted back on a train to Bristol with doing nothing wrong. Don't bring women and children because it's a football match and it's supposed to get rough. No it's a few idiots that make it hell for anyone else.

Its more for the fans safety actually, especially somewhere like Cardiff. You make it out as its just Bristol City, takes two to tango and you should've been at Ninian Park in the early 00's.. When Cardiff fans were highly aggressive throwing actual bottles of their own urine into the away end and so on, oh and allowed by the stewards. As documented by the program which was based on Cardiffs exploits against City and Leeds that season

No different to fans in the stand, as it isnt segregated either

No it's not just city but a few hundred of each set of fans. 20000+ last night and maybe 3-400 in total that wanted to be there for more than the football. I'm sure it's gotten more civilised over the years and you'll never cut out all the extra bits but it can be better. My opinion though.

Oh yeah I agree there were a few who were getting carried away, but its nothing new for the rest of us. City fans could've been impeccably behaved all night and Cardiff would have still been looking for trouble.

Stick to watching shit like the Lion King (if that's not too violent for you) at the cinema then...

Last night was a pretty tame affair really.

Probably the worst I can remember:

Just heard that Lily Allen has issued an apology for last night's events on behalf of the Nation.

Charlotte Church blamed global warming again, apparently they are going to hold a high powered summit very soon, invites to Russell Brand and Eddie Izzard, apparently none of them can dance, bake or like jungles.

No it's football. You can do what you want. Clowns. Ok to whack the stewards and set off fireworks in people faces. No one likes you lot. You go to football to enjoy yourself. It is you lot that ruin football and why there will be clear board in front of the pitch and seats moving further and further back. You're ruining your own game.

Joe, I don't know if you have read but clowns have been getting a really bad press lately?, even Ronald McDonald is keeping a low profile.

The 80's Cardiff and Millwall games were in a different league - only my opinion. They were usually really nasty, intense, passionate affairs in my experience.

The BBC series Cardiff games on Winterstoke road (night game), but also the year when Cardiff wrecked the away end at AG. There was 200/300 City lads outside the dolman waiting for them after seeing the ground demolished at the away end turnstiles. Only other club I saw do this was Spurs on a night game back in the old 1st Div days. They brought thousands down from London.

Yes, Cardiff broke the gates open/ demolished the turnstiles, had a row with OB, but they did not come out at the baying mob of City waiting for them. Could of got really nasty judging by the armoury on show.

These games were genuinely nasty events, and in a different league. A lot of the trouble was well away from the ground. The Mayors Arms by TM is one I remember.

Just loved the atmosphere at these games, open terracing, £10 tickets, etc, home and away. Real buzz, but not suitable for the corporate style this day in age.

Life changes.

I agree. One of my favourite ever away days. Intense!

Totally. Think went top as a result.  Watching Friday night sort of made me greatful that we've remained arbitrary AG. The atmosphere was non existent. Not saying AG is great but I think AV may have made it worse

I seem to recall a spot of bother in 2007 at home to Cardiff, well I say a spot of bother more like by historical standards minor skirmishes in the ground, fairly sure fans in segregation or should that be lack of segregation went at each other at the final whistle. I am sure of it. Was at Cardiff home 2001, don't remember any problems that day but then I only remember in the ground- I do though remember Millwall 2001, that was an eventful evening on the pitch and had an electric atmosphere- was on a Friday night! I also vaguely remember a lot of seats flying.

Ha, yeah I remember that game, I think they 'kicked off' lobbing seats just after the start of the match. We won with a late penalty scored by Lee Matthews on his debut.

I remember Cardiff at home in 2007 maybe 2008. Cardiff fans ran over the segregation in the eastend towards city fans.

I thought Friday night was pretty calm at most, half time was ridiculous but overall it was tamed.

I do miss going to Ninian Park though, that was a different experience altogether,

It was 07 I am sure, I couldn't make the 08 game so maybe it happened there too for all I know but I do remember in 07.

@Peter O Hanraha-hanrahan That was it, there was the last minute pen on Matthews debut, 3 red cards, the seats- a great game to come to straight back off holiday!
