From the ridiculous to the sublime

Thanks for that Ole,it was the way I 'saw' the game listening to it on the radio. The first half sounded to me exactly as you saw it and was so upbeat but also nervous because of our inability to see a game out. We had some really good chances to have increased our lead but as soon as they scored you could almost sense the outcome wasn't going to be a good one. Our both full backs are our achilles heel and with this current pairing will continue to be.

Great post @Olé. Can't agree more.

Cotts is simply a machine. I hope his wisdom passes on to some of the other midfielders. If we get the chance to sign him on a permanent, chuck some of the Kodj money at Brum. Worth every penny.

Taylor and Djuric is the partnership I wanted yesterday. When RB said Taylor was coming off for Milan, I screamed at the radio. It should have been Tammy. Taylor knows he has to prove himself and that's why he was running rings around the Derby defence. No disrespect to Tammy but I think Djuric with his taller height to collect long balls and Taylor with his nipping speed would have made a difference.

As a bona fide LJ outter a few weeks back, I'm flabbergasted that this team has provided this performance. Yes, a work in progress and plenty left still to do but Leeds away certainly smells different to me now.

Oh and I've been told everytime I bet against City, we either draw or win so I'm sticking a quid on Leeds 2-1.

If we haven't shot our bolt . Will the same players start ? Will they be able to reproduce the same energy needed to grab hold of the match ?

Answers to these and much more in Tuesday's thrilling installment of Bristol City .

At Derby I saw one of the best attacking 45 minutes for a long time from City.  Joe Bryan and Dave Cotterill in particular tore them apart. Hegeler and Brownhill ran the midfield. The second half was obviously not as good, mainly because Derby  had nothing to lose, shit or bust, so threw the kitchen sink at us. Ok we know our LB and RB positions aren't our best but Little and Golbourne stood little chance in the end against constant attack. McClaren had nothing to lose at 3 0 down....his substitutions showed it was all or nothing. Of course we were disappointed at losing such a lead but it happens. We showed enough yesterday ( for me anyway ) to say we will avoid the drop. Who knows at Leeds....:fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed:

You're spot on regards Cotterill. He ripped them a new one yesterday. Excellent corners too !

wotcha, Derby fan here in peace, seriously, City played some of the best football first half that I've seen at Pride Park this season, not many teams come here and put us under the cosh like that!

Good stuff and again encouraging to read, especially from an opposition fan.

Cheers mate.

I spent the match outside the Millenium Stadium watching BBC text and getting texts from a mate. I couldn't believe the half time score but as an eternal pessimist I had a horrible foreboding for the next forty five.

And so it came to pass that my awful thoughts came true although it wasn't 4-3, the worst scenario. So I am unable to comment on what happened but offer a couple of things that came to mind later.

We have a back four with very little "pace" and that is probably why we sit so deep. Pace to me means not only the sped of movement over the first five/ten yards but also speed of thought. We could do with at least two of the four to have better pace than the current incumbents - not trying to pick anyone from them. It could be one full back and one centre back or two full backs.

The team selection looked right to me, albeit with the benefit of hindsight, but the subs bench looked to have too many attack minded players. I'm puzzled how we go into an away game with only one specialist defender (Vyner) yet three out and out attackers (Tomlin, Djuric, Paterson) an attacking midfielder O'Dowda and Pack. I know Hegeler can play in back four and Joe Bryan can go to full back if needed but too much swapping around in a game can easily upset the balance. I'm amazed Magnusson was not on the bench as he gives cover for Wright/Flint and Golbourne.

This is not a slag at LJ but I'm puzzled why/how he makes these decisions.

And watching Wales gift wrap it to England in the last three minutes rounded off what could have been a perfect day. Hey ho and off the cauldron called Elland Road on Tuesday. Which City team will turn up?

Thanks, great post, makes me more regretful I couldn't make it, in spite of the second half capitulation which was no doubt painful to behold.

Just watched the goals - very clinically taken. I love that Tammy and Taylor were falling over each other to score the first!

Defensively - really getting exploited down the flanks. SG got sucked well out of position for the first. Again the second was a simple work around. Then obviously the third is a poor challenge. But oh so nearly what a save from Giefer.

I like both Little and Golbourne as they are triers and Little especially for what he did in 14/15. But definitely an area that needs attention. I'd bring Hordur back for LB. Selling Ayling looks like a bad call from LJ.

It's not often we are in a position to lose a three goal advantage away from home. Yesterday I also witnessed one such occasion. I was dissapointed to say the least (but reminded myself I would have taken a point at the start of the game). I guess the question Lee has to ask himself is 'why it happened'. Fix that and we can start to look forward.

I didn't mean City necessarily....Bournemouth v Arsenal for example. It happens in football in general. Got to be positive....it was a point against a side with a very strong line up.

I think it's just a hangover from the bad run. Once they got one back we were worried what would happen if they got another, when we should have still felt comfortable. The players were worrying it would fall apart. In an odd way, I think if their first goal had come when we were 2-0 up and then we had scored again to make it 3-1 we might have mentally have been stronger and seen the game out. The confidence will come back if pick up a few more results.

I agree. We seem to lack a little fitness / concentration in the last 10 to 15 mins but are woefully short on confidence.

Having said that - I'm liking what I saw in the first half yesterday, so my confidence is on the up :-)

Great post @Olé, I know you tell it as it is and that's why I for one respect your views

As others have said, maybe LJ now has a better understanding of what actually works and keep the bulk of those players that started in Saturday. Don't underestimate the influence Cotterill and Taylor have had since their arrival, as well as the obvious change of formation. Worry about how we set up, not purely to play mind games with the opposition. Being clever comes with a lot more experience than LJ has right now. Reward the players with a starting place, build up confidence and consistency, how many times have players played well only to find themselves out for the next game without reason.

I am holding out to see what happens on Tuesday. If we turn up and give a decent performance then hopefully "times are a changing" but if it's back to default, then those 50 minutes might just be a flash in the pan.... 1 or 3 points Tuesday would take most of the pressure of the team for now - here's hoping !

So Dave Cotterill, Matt Taylor and the other brand new signings have had a "long time" to become famililiar with this sort of system??

I appreciate that LJ can do no wrong in your eyes, but to come out with ridiculous statements like that does you no favours.

We couldn't exactly sign them in November or December could we?

Oh trust me he does get criticism from me but I don't feel the need to air those criticisms, especially when it just repeats what others are saying.

I'm a half glass full sorta person so always try to look for the positives.  If that doesn't do me any favours then so be it.

Here I am on one almighty unexpected high having seen our team play unlike anything they've done this season, nothing can annoy me today, just nothing.... and then you have to say something as ridiculous or patronising as this. Seriously, have a word with yourself.

It's been so obvious everyone on both sides of LJ In or LJ Out have been salivating for weeks over being able to say "I told you so" or claim foresight, I honestly can't believe you're the first to raise and wave your flag like today was something you had been predicting.

Today was incredible simply because there has been absolutely no evidence, ZERO evidence, before, that we could play as we did today. Not even in flashes. We've done nothing like we did today, to anyone, ever, this season. Don't start pretending you saw this coming.

If LJ doesn't turn out to be the right manager, I won't be on here raking up posts or views from weeks ago, much less claiming to have foreseen future events. Please don't insult everyone else's intelligence by acting like you had today's style of play pegged weeks ago.

Absolutely shameless!

Hey Olé, I didn't expect this sort of post from you. Really disappointing.

I suggest if a post on a forum annoys then maybe a forum isn't for you? How can someone else's opinion destroy your optimism?

I'm not a person who is full of I told u so etc. My post was a genuine I believed over time we could see performances like we did yesterday, my beliefs were starting to wear thin a little but there has been some encouraging positives from the last few games that has put me back in the let's see what happens camp.

I had this style of play as you put it 'pegged' from the moment we appointed LJ as manager. I certainly have seen flashes of this style of play, ok in very small doses but I've seen them.

Maybe your level of expertise isn't as good as you think if you havnt seen these moments?

See unlike most I can see beyond the result, I thought you also fell into that bracket but obviously not.

Genuine question..... what sort of system are you saying LJ has been getting the players used to??? Ive not seen to consistent plan at all. What is it you have seen him working towards???

The one we saw yesterday, a system like that doesn't occur over night, it doesn't occur by chance.

In some games we've played I agree LJ hasn't set us up to play this way but that's tactics for you and they can vary depending on the opposition.

I've said similar (except shorter) about the same poster on the previous page. As you say, shameless.

Oh just leave it will you. All I give a **** about is Bristol City. I currently believe for now LJ is our man, you may think otherwise, I respect your opinion so how about your respect mine also?

I thought we were outstanding for the first 20 minutes versus Preston.  That was without Wright, Djuric, Cotterill etc.

Of course, they scored against the run of play and then we deteriorated...

This was what I was alluding to. In flashes we have seen us play this way, maybe I'm just an eternal optimist but I hope in time we can try to play this way every game.

Imo a system like this requires a high level of confidence and up until recently we have lacked that confidence.
