Kid in the Riot
Glad Jimmy has been dropped. Thought his comments were piss poor after the first test but overlooked cus it's Jimmy: "but if all the pitches are like that I’m done in the Ashes series" He's always been a bit precious, but if you ain't up for the fight then can't carry passengers. No hard feelings, quite possibly time has finally caught up with him.
1960maaan
England could beat the Aussies , some big hitting but wicket at the right time for England. 27 off 8 needed . Good game.

It shows he can score runs in the first innings when the pressure’s off, and he seldom goes on. He didn’t deserve to start the series IMO and I doubt there’d be a public outcry if he was dropped. Harsh. Very harsh. I was not overly keen on him opening but has looked ok. To drop him now, at this point, would be very harsh.

I took that to mean he’d be dropped not that he wouldn’t want to play

For me, not the attitude to be displaying publicly during an Ashes series. Keep it to yourself.

England's most reliable back ups and alternatives in Woakes and Wood are 34 and 33, Ollie Robinson is 29 so maybe 5/6 years at best? Don't get the impression he's as disciplined for the long term and Broad/Anderson physically. Potts and Tongue have potential for long term at 24/25 Sam Cook at Essex is talked about and is 25 but he's another line/length more than speed. Mahmood is 26 but seemingly reoccuring injuries Archer seems to be dead in the water for internationals, especially tests Stone is 29 and seems to suffer injuries Sam Curran is 25 and offers a left arm variation but not much pace, another option with the bat Fisher at Yorkshire? 24 but untested Carse is quick but injured regularly Can't see Stokes bowling in 2 years time he'll either be a specialist batsman or out the team So in 18-24 months we could be looking at a bowling attack of Potts, Tongue, Cook, Curran

A lot of bowlers improve massively between 22-23 and 26-27. Nathan Gilchrist, Sonny Baker, Henry Brookes, Matt Milnes, and Josh Baker all being looked at by England as well. All under
Northern Red
In addition to all of the above, there'll be people they've got their eye on who will be going well under the radar of your average fan, plus there's always room for bowlers forcing their way in through sheer numbers of wickets. How many people would have had Tongue anywhere near a call-up a few months ago, same for Potts last year? The main concern would be that pretty much every bowler named in the last couple of posts has had some type of serious injury, often a stress fracture and in some cases recurring (Mahmood the latest one). Some of that can be put down to growing pains and development, but there also has to be a look at how bowlers are being handled, workloads, coaching, preparation etc.

ralphindevon
Great to see Woody back. Probably the quickest bowler I’ve seen at Taunton in the last 10 years. Just hope he can hit the ground running and stay fit.

1960maaan
I love Mark Wood, but I do wonder if the slips will enjoy life if they start edging it, he is rapid. Great to see. Oh for an Archer/Wood opening pair in this series. Edited July 6, 2023 by 1960maaan
And Its Smith
Robinson has a better average than Wood but Wood has a better strike rate. Pretty similar performers for England. Superb start from Wood and first time this series Aussie batters have looked uncomfortable
