And lack of cricket? He's another that's hardly played this year.

For me this is the key point. To ask someone, after a year of no cricket, to be a main batter and wicket keeper is a very big ask.

I suppose its said with hindsight, but many people wanted Foakes and Bairstow in the team if you look to the start of this thread.

If they don’t then McCullum can go in my book.

I'm happy to see Bairstow in as a batter , but just let him concentrate on that.

I've always preferred as specialist keeper but it will be a real juggling act for the next Test to get the bowling right.
With Stokes not bowling, Robinson must be a doubt even questions over Wood being able to stay the course. I have a feeling they will stick with Keeper/Batter as it makes it easier to play another bowler .

Butcher gave a mention to the late great Sylvester Clarke. Due to the incredible strength of the West Indies bowling attack he never won the international caps he deserved, which was probably why he took the unwise decision to go on the rebel tour to South Africa. In domestic cricket however he was frightening, regularly bowling at 95mph. Certainly I never saw another bowler unsettle Viv Richards as much as him.

I'm not saying it's particularly relevant to this wicket but what happened to the medium pacer in test cricket. It seems to be fast or spin with nothing in between.

Suppose it depends on wicket taking quality, if you look in England how many medium pacers take enough wickets to justify consideration?

England been given a couple of gifts here.

Marsh and Stokes aside it seems no-one fancies a bat on this pitch!

The pitch is the best of the series so far, though I expect Old Trafford to even better being the best wicket in the land.
