The official Atletico Unión Güímar v Bristol City FC pre-season friendly match day thread

Morning folks!

Well well. It's been a week of rain for us here in Blighty and a week of heat for City, both on and off the pitch. With the wild rumours of Flint and Joe being packed off to the land of Hovis and the fall out tweets from Mr Tomlin and Mr Pembo (for the record Kelly McGillis could handle a Maverick Pembo!), it's certainly been another eventful tour in Tenerife.

Today, it's our only tour friendly against Atletico Unión Güímar, a club formed by an amalgamation of two others 8 years ago. Just like our very own City was born over 100 years ago...

I have absolutely no idea who they are as everything I can find on Google about them is in Spanish and "una cerveza por favor" is my limit.

From what I can gather though, they don't play in any of the main leagues so I can only assume it will be similar competition to Bath City/Torquay United/BMF etc.

A tough test in a humid heat at altitude will be a different ball game for some of our boys. So I'm feeling a draw. 2-2.

Kick off is at 6pm - not sure if that's Spanish time so it could also be 5pm our time - and supporters still on their holibobs in Tenerife are welcome to attend. Game can be followed via Twitter and I'll try and post key tweets here...

Come on you reds or purples...

The Canary Islands are in the same time zone as the UK so kick off time is 6pm.

As is just about everything else these days!

Not sure this score helps St James Confidence. Is this a lesson or just abject humiliation.

It seems pretty pointless for both sides. Avoiding serious injuries is probably the main criterion for the city side now.

I'd imagine that will be the case in the FC Twente game, not sure about today, against a team in the Spanish regional leagues

Obviously. But you want to do it more than once, and no point doing it against Cheltenham who lost to Bath midweek and are getting taught a lesson by Weston currently.

I'd rather we did it against Cheltenham, they will be of a higher standard than today's opponents.

We don't know the strength of the Cheltenham side for those games, so hard to read into that, but the quality in the Spanish leagues falls away much quicker than it does over here.

We don't? You don't. I watched them v Bath and they were of a mixed strength, today pretty much full strength and didn't have a kick until Weston took off a couple of their better players at HT. Cheltenham are a conference side in the making. Believe me!! Harry Pell striker! D'oh

fair enough if you do

Thought Pell was a midfielder? Though I also thought I read Cheltenham had a bit of an injury crisis at the moment, may be wrong though

Looks as though LJ agrees with me...

Strong side.

No Flint. Ellend Road bound? ;)

No Flint. Something is definitely cooking here I reckon.

Concerning that Bobby Reid is featuring so prominently. Do hope we've 2/3 still to come in.

Not too concerned, If he doesn't start against Cheltenham or FC Twente then there would be real reason to think something is happening.

He's still out there anyway.

Reid's only playing there because we've got no other strikers fit

That's great. Just trying to work out what he said that will upset someone. Im sure there will be something, but I'm struggling! COYR

What about Gus? Brought him back from Sweden to check him out. I thought he was fit now?

When he said there had been no moaning he was surely lying since we know from posters on here that he has fallen out with almost every player.

Anyway reading everything from Eamon Dunphy's seminal book to the Secret Footballer players seem to do precious little else!

God help us if that team starts in a few weeks.

Why? Looks a strong and balanced team to me as well as being a likely starting XI for August.

So the fact that Bryan is playing proves he won't be sold then?

And if we're going to read anything into pre-season warm ups then shouldn't Reid's goals be significant too?

Don't get any of that on here

I know it's pre season but surely half the point is for the players to fight for their place and Bobby can't do much more than he's doing to earn a shot up top

What standard are this team do we think? League 1, League 2, Conference? Don`t know much about their league outside the top two divisions TBH.

Downs league by the looks of it.

From what I can gather, on Twitter they are a 'third tier outfit'. I think that means Segunda División B. But they aren't listed as a team as far as I can see...

They're in the third tier in Spain. So prabably close to mid table conference.

Why?

It isn't too dissimilar from the team that won at Brighton in April, they played pretty well that day.

Pisano has replaced Little...time will tell if he is an upgrade.

Reid had replaced Taylor...some would say Reid is more skilful and let's face it Taylor hasn't been prolific.

Diedhou has replaced Tammy.

Only other change is Hegeler in for Flint...no issue there for me. It's a training game and we need to learn more about Hegeler in this position. We already know Flints strengths and weaknesses.

With the injuries, doubts LJ has over some and the sheer number of goals. Reid has to be nailed on to start the first game , unless something drastic happens between now and then.

6 in 4 I'd keep him up too for Cheltenham and twente too, 45 in each game

Got to be given a go...He has been asked to step into a strikers role and can only play who's in front of you....Fair play to him

He'll never score that many !!

7 in 4 has he found his position?

Hope so, it`s another serious option if nothing else. Perhaps he`s realised (or been told) that this season is make or break for him.

Basically a level six side in the UK .... not ideal preparation for the new season ... maybe a better bet a week in Belfast with a friendly or two versus Derry City and the like.

The sort of level we struggle against in Cup matches ;)

It's a friendly the lvl of opposition means nothing

It's for fitness and working on tactics only,

how did your team get on against forest green?

It's more to do with the raining camp, then a game tacked on for the fans , rather than a friendly game/tour. They put more emphasis on the training / fitness/ bonding , than the game time.
I'd like to see tougher opposition , I know we have FC20 later in the week but maybe 2/3 games against reasonable opposition. A mate is on tour with QPR in Berlin(2 games I think) , have to say I was a little jealous, if that was us I'd be very tempted.
I'm not really a big fan of friendlies , and I'm not sure you learn much Vs the sides we've played , but I guess it helps fitness and Reid's confidence must be sky high.
