Will be my first game of the season as some plonker I know is getting married on Saturday (ceremony even starts at 3.00pm, how lousy is that?)  Clearly, the bloke is not a football fan.

Anyway, how many are / will be going? the tickets are an £11 bargain price and I'm hoping we'll have over 13k, but appreciate early rounds don't generate a lot of interest.

But the Plymouth factor, that's quite interesting, isn't it?  Anybody know how many fans they are expecting?

Posted

Quite an interesting game, Plymouth will definatly bring good numbers, if we get off to a good start on Saturday I think we will get 7k of our own and whatever they bring.

Posted

will be taking my lad to this as its school holiday, as always im tempted in by the cheap price,  then moan all the way home as we get dumped out of the cup by a lower league team .  cheap tickets = cheap performance ;)

I would like to see how seriously LJ is going to take it, team wise, before I decide how seriously I am going to take it. ie turn up or not.

Karl Robinson was saying the other day that he makes sure fans are aware if he intends to make changes well before the game so that they are not misled and know what / who they  will be watching

Ive heard other managers say the same previously

Think we should do likewise (in this competition)

See what you're saying, although I reckon that when tickets are so low, you just have to turn up irrespective of the team being picked.

After all, it's still a Bristol City team, no matter if any of the regulars are rested.

If it was full price entry, I'd think differently.

Why should we, or any club do that..?

We have a squad of players. Our team will be selected from that squad of players.

It's the kind of game we usually lose. Will give this a miss. Nothing cup as we got far last season then put out a weakened team.

Settled on the night - using the new ABBA style shootout should it be required

Knowing me or knowing Engvall, he'd be good at the ABBA shootout

I wasn't going to go because I thought it'd be a reserve team that LJ would pick, but having read that I'm happy to Take a chance on Lee.

If we have Eliasson and the Swedish keeper from Swansea as well there will be no hiding place for LJ this time!

One thing I would say; hope we rest Smith, if no one else.

Was such a notable absence at the start of last season; I'd save him for the league games, as he adds 10% to us every time he pulls on the shirt.

And immediately my brain went...

My, my!

At Ashton Gate the Piglims did surrender...

I need to get out more.

Engvall and Magnússon play 90 minutes in a strong city team.

Good to great performances by both putting pressure on LJ for selection ahead of Birmingham City.

A win of course. Momentum is so important.

Seems strange that the Argyle tickets are only £10 and City £11. Surely a first for away fans to be charged less than home fans. Great prices though and should mean that there are plenty in the away end to create a good atmosphere.

Opportunity Knocks for them.

I'd think LJ will give a few players one minutes tomorrow night and would be fine with that. I'd like to win every game as much as the next person but there are players who will need minutes. This is what I'd go with:

Lucic, Vyner, Wright, Baker, Kelly, O'Dowda, O'Neil, Pack, Paterson, Engvall, Reid

Fielding, Hinds, Bryan, Magnússon, Smith, Diedhiou, Brownhill

Gives Baker and Wright some minutes together. It also gives youth a chance but with experience around them. Still a team that can and probably should win. Enough in the bench to change the game as well

When LJ asks  who wants to take a penalty,  will Frankie say " take a chance on me"!

Not looking like a big crowd for this one! Bit of a shame, Argyle have sold around 2k tickets so far which is impressive.

Living in Plymouth I'll be making the trip up with them! Hopefully a few turn up on the day but by my reckoning it looks like we have sold about 8k tickets so far , disappointing given ticket prices, our start and the fact its the school holidays!

Would really mix the bag for this one..

Lucic,Vyner,Baker,Magners,O'Dowda,O'Neil,Engvall,Hinds-all to start....

Argyle away support very noisy so should be an OK atmo....with a strong bench to come into play,2-1 City..

Plymouth always travel well here, imagine they'll be a loud and vociferous following.

They're a handy side and we'll need to be on form.

We should have enough to beat them, but they'll be really up for this and could easily cause an upset.

I predict only a couple of changes from the weekend, hope Engvall gets some minutes though.

Good shout about Wright and Baker, I think LJ may keep a strongish side just to keep a little momentum. It depends if Đurić is ready , we don't have many options up front. I wouldn't be surprised to see Brownhill given a run CM with Oneil and ODowda coming in, Golbourne maybe Vyner . Don't think he'll risk 2 young FB's at the same time. Engval should start ,  hard to make too many changes as I don't think it will be an easy game.
Going to miss it thanks to work changing my shifts, would have liked to see Engval after a successful loan.

I am thinking along similar lines. Agree with giving Wright and Baker some playing time together. I'd probably have O'Neil playing Pack's role tomorrow and keep Smith in. And possibly rest Paterson - Brownhill to stay on the right, and O'Dowda  to play on the left.

I toyed with a back 3 to fit Magnússon in but it doesn't really help form the partnership. Maybe, and I know it doesn't seem likely, Mags starts at LB? That would be the only way he would get 60+ minutes for me. Paterson, Smith, Pack and Brownhill I would rest all if we had options but don't think we do and can add Reid and Diedhiou to that. So some have to play.

Possibly not. That is the whole extent of my knowledge on the matter. I best change my name now as I have run out of catchphrases.

Anyway, back on topic. Looking forward to the game tomorrow I just have to organise a lift @Spoons

Funny how we're their cup final. They're all buzzing for it on Twitter.

Could you be more condescending? Argyle have had very little to enjoy over the last 6 years in the bottom division. If the roles were reversed would City only be taking a few hundred as it is not their 'cup final'?

Argyle always travel in numbers as do City and both should be applauded, not belittled.

If City take 2,000 to Cardiff, Swindon, Wolves etc... are they 'cup finals'?

Remind me at what point City got so MASSIVE that you developed a superiority complex?

Posted

I don't think he will but I'd like him to keep the starting xi as close to Saturday as poss, barring players carrying knocks etc.

Use the game to hopefully carry on momentum and increase the confidence.

James, thanks for your reply but I think you may have missed the point I was making.

I wasn't criticising City's support to those grounds. I was highlighting that I don't see the need to belittle the fact that Argyle are potentially bringing 2k tomorrow night.

You do however highlight that given that the teams I quoted are local (ish) in football terms to City you can expect to travel in numbers. Hence the Argyle support. Believe it or not City is local for Argyle.

City v Plymouth is a west country derby and crowds both home and away have always been good for the fixture for many years.

I can well imagine Plymouth fans are buzzing at the prospect of visiting a redeveloped AG, their first visit to south Bristol in 7 or 8 years.

Other than Exeter I'd imagine we're their next biggest fixture.

They took 1200 to Posh on Sat, after a few years out of L1. It's a long way - but every trip is long for them - but I thought they might take more than that. Tue night, reasonably meaningless game... 1,000 or so, I'd say. Be a bit strange if they brought more here, even though it's nearer. But you're right, the crowds have been good between us - 25,000 there in 86 when they finished second in the Third. Big club, the WC's second biggest for sure. Strangely, I like them, despite the rumbles against their boys in the 80s. Something reassuringly clotted cream about them.

Yes, I did see people point out they've sold X (varies from 1,400 to 2,000 that I've seen). I rarely can be bothered reading through a full thread so I may have missed that before posting. Apologies to all.

Pretty poor IMO

not really its a cup comp most city fans have little or no interest in, add the fact that its unlikely to be city's league first team on show and its easy to see why not many city are going,

as for Plymouth easy to see why they want to come to the new gate after a few years at most of England poorer grounds and the fact that they think they can win given our record most of the time in this cup,

I understand they have sold something like 1700 tickets which is not bad at all. They seem to consider the us and the Gas major rivals which isn't really reciprocated.

Sadly there will be a lot of empty seats in the home sections - I wish the club would make season tickets include Cup games.

Posted

Also, are we happy that we are likely to see a second string XI out there tomorrow? I'm not.

Not that we'll be alone I'm sure - but if clubs feel the need to do that then perhaps it's time to reevaluate if two domestic cup competitions and a 46-game league season are the best format.

Saw O'Leary in goal for under 23s tonight. Wonder if that means Lucic to play tomorrow. Also Moore and Golbourne both starting tonight. Surely means they will both not play/start
