Midfield hard nut

What we need is an experienced midfield hard nut who gets well and truly 'stuck in'', gets around the park and runs the show.  I think our midfield at present is competant, not great, but lightweight and needs a general to boss things. Should also tighten things up defensively.

When you look at our squad, that position seems to lack depth. If Pack/Smith are suspended or injured, what happens? GON? - clearly not fancied. Brownhill? Shifting players around again. After that I'm struggling, Hegeler? Can't play in a midfield two apparently. Bryan?

We're crying out for a modern Tommy Doherty to come and put his stamp on the game.

where are these players anymore? what successful team has them?

Our players looked a bit lightweight yesterday since Birmingham had older and physically stronger players, that will be the case against some other sides as well (eg Cardiff) but not all, that comes in part with having a young team but in some games it will be an advantage to us to have smaller, quicker energetic players.

IMO it`s because the game has become non-contact to all intents and purposes. Tackling is effectively banned and players like Tommy D would spend more time suspended than playing.

If we can summon up a hard midfielder in this transfer window, bear in mind that to do the job properly HE MUST HAVE A BEARD............

That looks like Charles Bronson (the prisoner). He's certainly provide some nastiness in the middle of the park. Would have thought his disciplinary record would be poor though.

Unfortunately there aren't many hard midfielders around. The days of Gerry Gow are long gone. He wouldn't have lasted long with today's refereeing........

we certainly don't need this type of player. The top six last season barely did.

We need three in midfield when playing away

I think we are at a disadvantage against teams with physical power, though I would go with 3 in midfield too.

How about Joe Ledley, big beard and has no club?

Gary O'neil?

He doesn't really fit the description in the op at all bar experienced.

Would like us to ship him out really, big wages for someone who's often injured and isn't a regular starter.

Good player, surprised he hasn't been picked up yet.  Worth a look IMO.

Surely the beauty of playing Reid up front, very flexible to fit the match situation.

If I were a manager the first thing I be suspicious about is why he hasn't got a club.............no smoke without fire.....

A box to box midfielder is needed like say Seb Larsson was a free agent just picked up by Norwich. It's a steady start from us we all know our away form is horrendous in championship 5 wins from 24 games which is awful this is out main problem

Posted

We tackled well yesterday, but lost the ball a lot with our short passing game. The issue with playing that way is when you do lose it you have to reshape quick or get hurt.

We have needed a tough midfielder for a while, someone that opposition players are a little bit intimidated by. Niether Smith or Pack are that man. But who is available and will he get us a few more goals from the midfield as neither Smith nor Pack will help much there.

Rohan ince who was on loan at Swindon last season is a powerhouse, tall, tough tackler, scores the odd goal and is said to be training with you at the moment on loan from Brighton

What, he's an arsonist? Blimey. Twisted firestarter.

Our central midfield needs more bite, physicality and energy. Number one priority for me.

You've literally just explained Korey Smith

Is that the new Lego midfielder?!

It would be nice to have someone like Diame/N'Doye (Birminghams 17 yesterday, thought we couldn't get near him second half)

Not a priority for me though, need a target man if Đurić isn't back soon, and a keeper after that.

Ince was rumoured several weeks ago ahead of a friendly, but was quickly ruled out when it became clear he wasn't the trialist. Not heard his name mentioned since, so would be surprised if he is training with us - that sort of stuff usually gets picked up on pretty fast.

Not sure Moeen is cut out for this role.

Fair point you make and probably right but I know that Williams rated him and he seemed too good for league one but never going to get in brightons squad this season.

I'd quite like it to be true. Could be a handy squad player and add something different to the midfield unit.

He certainly gives 100% every game  unlike Gladwin who you could have ended up with a year or so ago and reminds me a little like pogba and has plenty of prescence  in the middle of the pitch

Better check which century it is.

Gerry Gows unsporting and reckless stare would be bookable.

His perm and tache would be a sending off offence these days!

In a game that is moving away from physicality how does getting "stuck in'' run the show?

The game has indeed changed as you say but there seem to be more big, physically powerful midfielders around these days. We could do with such a player imo.

Midfielders are mobile and universal who now make only a few tackles, sometimes nil. The endurance levels are differing and the distances covered are increasing. That is where football is going. Technique, intelligence and physical but via movement is what many Mangers look towards v big.

Bristol City last player on the hard side - Dave Martin would have hated the fanny football (his description of passing to feet) with barely any physicality involved.

Sir Gerry's stare was totally sporting and not at all reckless. It said in a calm, restrained manner, "Stay out of my way or I'll break yer legs, then yer arms and then yer neck." It gave the player to whom it was directed fair warning. How is that unsporting?

Of course in this day and age the player it was directed at would have fallen over, writhing on the ground like he'd been shot. So yeah, you're probably right he would've been booked for it.

So I think we are all agreed.

We need a box to box ball winning playmaker goal scoring midfielder. Needs to be hard as #### in the tackle, with a great engine, able to beat his man, two footed, dominant in the air, pace to burn, dead ball specialist. Best if he is nearly out of contract so available cheap, and willing to take a pay as you play deal. Oh, and must come with his own catchy song.

Now what the hell is holding things up? I presume he will be revealed at half time on Saturday. Exciting times.
