Grem
At half time it's Socceroos 0 Thailand 0 but god only knows how Australia haven't scored - the post twice, poor finishing and lucky Thai defending has been the difference. Australia have had about 75% possession and 14 shots. Wright appeared to start on right side of back 3 but as game opened up was playing as a virtual right wing back and I've never seen him play so offensively. He's seen lots of the ball and been mainly good with just a couple of stray passes. He set up a good chance for Cahill with an overhead kick on edge of the 6 year box and then maybe should have scored the opener with a decent headed chance but it came to him quickly and there was just a hint of a deflection on the way. As the half wore on he was caught a couple of times on the break so had to produce a couple of cynical fouls, with second resulting in a yellow card. With this in mind I would be surprised if he isn't subbed sometime in the second as Australia can't afford to lose a player in a must win game. Grem
Full time 2-1 to Socceroos which means they will qualify for Russia if Saudi Arabia don't beat Japan in Jeddah tomorrow. As predicted Wright was subbed on 70 mins, 2 mins after Australia took the lead through Juric, who up until then had looked like he couldn't hit a barn door from 6 yards. Wright reverted back to the right of a back three and didn't get forward much. Didn't put a foot wrong and made a great tackle on 60 mins. Australia lucky not to concede a pen (not Wright) in the opening mins but then reverted to type having most of the chances and hit another post through Rogic. On 81 mins Thailand scored a goal created down the left which may not have happened if Wright had been on the field. Luckily, Leckie got the winner against the spirited Thai's on 85 mins. Now we sweat on the result from Jeddah tomorrow.

Syria scored a 90th minute equaliser against Iran to send them into the play offs at the expense of Uzbekistan. A remarkable footballing achievement considering the mess that their country is in. If Saudis fail to win, Oz are into the finals and it will be Saudi Arabia v Syria.

pride of the west
So is it a play off with Syria then? Do Syria actually play in Syria with what's going on? I cant imagine too many FA's or clubs wanting their players going over there for a game or their fans for that matter.

New Dazzler
Just checked. Syria are banned from playing home matches in Syria, they have played these qualifiers in Malaysia.
Grem
Yes, Socceroos play Syria first and if they win then have another play-off v 4th best CONCACAF team which is currently Honduras. Japan looked decent in the first half, had two cleared off the line and missed a few just wide. Before the goal, SA had a great chance but Jap keeper made a brilliant save with trailing leg. Once SA scored it looked all over in the heat as Jap's had already qualified so not a lot of incentive. It's like the bad old days when Australia had to go the tough route to qualify but at least it's Central and not South America this time.

Does that mean that we`ll lose him for these games or are they played during normal international breaks? I think there`s only one more of those. I think there`s only one more of those. No, the games will be played in the International breaks. Australia plays Syria over two legs on 5th & 10th October. The winners will play 4th best in CONCACAF (either Honduras, USA or Panama) over two legs being 6th & 15th November. Socceroos stuffed it with too many draws. In the end they were 1 point off top spot (Japan) and same points but 2 goals worse off than the Arabs with only the single defeat away in Japan but still not good enough. Problem is at the pointy end and last nights stats speak volumes - 39 shots fired, 16 corners, 64 balls into the area and 70% possession and still only won by 1 goal! Could have done with Agostino coming out of retirement! Bailey Wright got a decent write up on Fox Sports though - Wright was everywhere: confident on the ball, willing to create overloads further forward and generally solid, scrambling back aptly when needed. Even attempted a first-half bicycle kick.
