At what level have you played football?

A question has been asked in another thread by one poster to another

" Have you played football at any level?

So my question to you all is " Have you played football at any level? If so, which?"

For myself, I had a couple of seasons in Somerset County League, but mostly Sunday League pub teams.

Sexist !

No decent standard, but the highest level was on crooks peak

Semi pro for Bristol Manor Farm, my career highlight was taking out Sean Rigg with an extremely late tackle when we played against Bristol Rovers under 18's around 2006 I believe! We lost 2-0 on the downside and I had to quit playing due to knee trouble and he's still knocking around in the lower league's, nevermind eh!

Bloody hell, good chance I watched you play.

Mid 2000s me and my Dad were either at The Creek watching Manor Farm, or Moorhouse Lane watching Hallen.

Didn't have the best of games although I took a free kick in the last minute that came close to going in, pretty sure I would of enjoyed that against the gas! Love manor farm just not that easy to go and see them being that I live over in Fishponds!

I'm a big Manor Farm fan now, really got into them the last few seasons. Similar to yourself with transport being a pain as I live in Kingswood and don't drive, but the club helps a lot with that with their deals.

Play exciting football and great offers for fans.

Half price if you show a City season ticket, half price if you take the train to get there or a reduced price if you get the Park & Ride to the game. Amazing incetives for the level considering how much ticket receipts means for clubs at that level. Helps that their crowd last monday was mid 200s, rather than the 30-40 they used to get.

How much does it cost if you show your season ticket? My local non league club is mangotsfield and I went to school there so have a bit of a soft spot for them but it's  £8 which isn't especially cheap really!

Played for Yeovil for 4 years left when they're academy closed down. Was never going to be close to making it. Was nice playing against some decent teams tho.

Over 40 years ago I played in what was the Western League. No idea what it's equivalent is these days.

We used to get "boot" money if we won. The first time it happened I thought the lads had stuffed paper into my boots as I showering but it was a fiver. My working wage at that time was £6 a week and pair of Levi 501s cost £3.50 so a fiver was terrific sum.

On the Monday I went out and bought a pair of Levi's.

Kicked a wooden block (from woodwork class) around the tarmac 'playground/yard' at Oldland Common Secondary Modern Boys School (pre Sir Bernard Lovell Comp' ) with about thirty other kids during dinnertime breaks... more of a puck than a ball :)  (bloody hurt too..)  ....

We didn't have mobile phones, tablets, online games Facebook etc (although there was a few angry birds around from the girls school down the road, if that counts?)  but give us a block of wood and we were happy!!..

(no Health & Safety in those days, but we did have school 'rules' that banned ball games in the yard!! ... chunks of 4x2 were apparently ok though!! ;) )

Easily pleased 'buffoons and simpletons'  some might say..  (just wanted to post those underused words following comments on another thread) :)

So school yard Kickabouts without balls was our 'level' not sure how advanced a standard we should be classified as though.

Played with a tennis ball at Chandag Juniors (we weren't allowed footballs at playtime) circa 1978. I was in goal, we had no net, just the markings on the concrete. Was quite difficult trying to avoid those playing Bulldogs or Last One in the Circle…

I remember going on a school trip to Switzerland  to play some friendly games.

When we arrived at Montreaux there was a sign up saying Montreaux  U16 v England schoolboys U16's so from that point on I have always classed myself as an ex international.

Needless to say after the first 5 minutes the person who put up the sign must have realised they had made a mistake.

Currently playing in Man vs Fat Weston (lost 2 stone so far, thank you very much) and is pretty much the only football I have played at since leaving school over 30 years ago.

It feels like there are some bloody good players there, just nobody is particularly fit

Spirit .

I was a fast , tough tackling wingback in the mould of Terry Cooper , Mick Mills or Stuart Pearce .

Get the ball or the man was my motto.

I played briefly  for Worlebury Wanderers  but refused the call from my school when they were a player short at a match where I just happened to be walking my dog  ( not Ashton Vale )

Not good enough to be selected , not good enough to make up the numbers .

That showed 'em.

So , not a pro but more a lover of the game or these days mostly a lover of City but not very interested in the Prem ( as yet ) or the national sides.

I once trained with Bridgewater Town . They didn't ask me back .

I could've be a contender .

Hellenic League, Western League, Gloucestershire County League, Suburban Prem & Bristol Prem plus 6 years down the Gate going through the Centre of Excellence and Schoolboy before being let go!

Charfield, Leighterton (Stroud League) Midelec Dynamoes (Worcester League) Melyn Manor, Yellow Stars (Neath League) Briton Ferry (Welsh League - not League of Wales) and finally a comeback aged 50 with Daventry Town Reserves in the United Counties League.  No loyalty shown as I was always chasing the big pay day, me!

Only ever played Sunday league football. Several promotions & cup triumphs, but I was always busy on Saturdays...!

5-a-side with a few lads who were signed up on here and another forum we used to post on.

Had to knock it on the head in the end as I had a never ending knee problem which was keeping me out for a few weeks at a time, play a game and then pick up another knock. Was also about to move to Norwich with my wife (then girlfriend) so because of the injuries I gave it up a bit sooner than I wanted to.

I got home and wore them in a warm bath because they shrank with blue dye going everywhere. Then I wore them around until they dried.

Mum thought I was nuts and made me go outdoors......no idea why..............

Was part of the management 'Dream Team' at Dav!  Joined and left the club at the same time as the first team manager.  His side's record was something like P52, W44, D4, L4............... then he had a bit of a spat with the great unwashed upstairs!

I had a great time, mind.  Trying to explain positions on a whiteboard to modern day players was a bit of a challenge.  I can't understand which bit of "Goalie, Left Back, Right Back, Left Half, Centre Half, Right Half, Outside Left, Inside Left, Centre Forward, Inside Right and Outside Right" they were struggling with, to be fair.  Seems like no-one in that league recognised the good old 2-3-5 formation from the 60's.

And more than one substitute????? Don't get me started on that!

School team in the 1970s was the height of my achievements. Small rural school - if you were male and the right age you had a good chance of playing! Our games master was a Welsh rugby player and didn't have a clue. We were so bad we used to get thrashed 6-0 by Millfield seconds.

Mostly Somerset Senior and Suburban for the last 20+ years, began finding it harder competing with the whipper snappers, also didn't want to block whipper snappers at my own club. Semi-retired from Saturdays last year, I'd say retired now, but will probably help out if/when required.

I've been playing in the Bristol Casual League (veterans) for the last few years which suits me perfectly, one game every few weeks on a Sunday morning, brilliant lads, decent football, more emphasis on technique/ability than pace/fitness, played in the right (Corinthian) spirit.

So the underlying theme for this thread is ' frustrated footballers ' now dishing it out to those that frustrate.

My frustration was back then because I had to drop out because of my work.......I had to work Saturdays and that was right bugger.

I could have made it, I really could...........

My 5 a side team has won the top Sunday evening league at Goals Bristol South 3 seasons in a row. The league is desperately lacking quality, there's only us and another team that can really play. If any of you have a decent team in need of a new league please sign up!

Played for Bristol City and Blackburn Rovers.

OK it was for the Association of Provincial Football Supporters Clubs In London at Wormwood Scrubs (next to but not in the prison) but the shirts were genuine.  In the latter case it was because Blackburn were a man short.

I also once played against Gary Mabbutt in a youth club game.  I didn't get anywhere near him and couldn't work out why - about 10 years later he was playing for Spurs and England. I understand he also had a spell with a local team, can't remember which.

I played at a high level and low level in the same match. First half high level, second half low level. I was a flying winger (artistic license) and once played on a pitch  which had an amazing slope from side to side. Taking a corner from the high side merely required kicking the ball horizontally to make it reach the penalty area at crossbar level. A corner from the low side was an impossibility

Interesting. I'm an old man now, but played for Old Cots as a lad (late 1960s) and again in my thirties (late 1970s), in between which periods I was away from Bristol for reasons of education and/or professional training. Some ex-players from my era remained involved with the club after hanging up their boots. We probably both know, or rather knew, a few of those guys. I was never particularly good, but enjoyed it, even if it wasn't the highest of standards in those days.

I've always been interested in this. Good question.

Western league level. Mainly Bris & Bishop Sutton a fair few years back. Shepton Mallet also.

A few years at Imperial Bristol (alongside T. Tainton!) in my late teens

A few seasons with a team called TDR Dynamo (Suburban Prem 1) in my early 20s.

They folded and I then went to Brislington and Odd Down for a few seasons in Western League Prem.

Snapped my ACL and spent 5 years at Stockwood Green trying to overcome the injury, eventually knackering my other knee before hanging my predators up at 31!

Played for a few Sunday teams too

Only ever played Sunday football in and around WsM but did once turn out for my brothers team (Trust House Forte) in Torquay. The game was reffed by Lester Shapter. That's the closest I got to footballing stardom!

At least you reached 31 man!

Was at QPR with stint with Aldershot before deciding it would be fun to Rupture my ACL/tear my LCL and meniscus cartilage (same knee) when jumping for a header and landing wrongly.

Tried to make a comeback of sorts training with Reading Town but so many complications with more operations and physiotherapy (mentally gone as well at this point) that I was forced to stop playing at 19. Haven't kicked a ball competitively of any sorts since then (7 years).

A bit of crap Sunday pub league stuff for me and I played for Downend as a youngster but, after going to St Brendans College, it was always going to be egg chasing for me. Played at a decent level, Bristol schools, South west counties colts but was a dreadful footballer. I was so bad that, after recuperating from a knee op years ago, I used to train with my neighbours football side. They were short for one pre season game so I made up the numbers. I was so bad they took me off and played with 10. I was told I even run like a rugby player!

I played for my Primary School team in my last year of Primary school (1984/85) and I was ******* shit.

In one game I was brought on with another lad for the last 10 minutes in a 'give the spackers a run out cause they bothered to turn up' move by the teacher and the team Captain actually protested the substitution with the teacher. That did wonders for my confidence.

In my last ever game I came on as a sub and was playing at the back against our local and bitter rivals. The ball bobbled loose and rolled past me towards goal. I left it and yelled out 'keepers'. The keeper who wasn't paying attention promptly watched the ball roll past him and into the net. Apparently that was my fault. I was subbed off and never played for another team apart from kick abouts, again.

For footballing claim to fame , I once scored against Rob Green when he was at Norwich.

I'm sure it still gives him nightmares.

Also a St Brendans Product, so Rugby was also going to be the sport I was most coached in. Played for SW Schools, but other than that, I played for a few games for my local club in the Bath and District League before injuring my knee in a freak collision. The Rugby boys were less than impressed when I had to explain that the surgeon at the RUH banned me from all physical contact sport... for life

Nice to hear from another Old Cot, Cliff. I guess you'd have known &/or played with John Bishop (Bish) who sadly passed away a month or two ago I'm sad to say. Cots were very well represented at the funeral with Eulogies from both Bryan Bullock and Andy Kavanagh who you may know. In my playing days Bryan was (I think) Club Secretary and Kavs was at the tail end of his playing career, although he is still with the club as Chairman. Some great memories from those days.

Full career (to date)

Lots of 5aside too since packing up the proper stuff. Such good memories of playing including beating Millfield with BGS and back-to-back promotion seasons on the Downs with Cots, great times up there on and off the pitch with some great lads.

Nowadays it's called banter but the dressing room attitude is something hard to replicate unless you've played a team sport I think
