Graffiti artwork in Ashton Gate

Cool idea. Part of the city's heritage and the concourses do look a bit plain.

Would be awesome to have famous Bristol City moments throughout our history graffitied on the inner walls all around the ground like a mural. Would be really unique feature. At the moment they still have that aircraft hanger feel in places.

Awesome. Love it.

The East End mural was brilliant too, pity that can't be reproduced.

Got some gert decent artists in Bristol.

True, but two out of three ain't bad.

To have (almost) anyone from the Bristol community of artists adding a splash of colour is superb. There was a day when I thought the club would never venture down this road. The grey/bland interior of the Gate is quite a disappointment given its splendid rebuild. There may be some who'll think this "isn't art"/"it's vandalism" but Bristol is culturally known for its high, high quality in this area and, given that doesn't apply necessarily to the football, I think we should embrace it. I've long wished for Cheo or Inkie or Nick Walker or Sickboy (not the one outta Trainspotting) or Stik to do something within our walls. The David James/3 Lions pieces on the wall at the back of the EE were a good start, a great start. We should build on that. Go to Reading tomorrow, see if they have anything - anything - remotely approaching what we have in our fair city. Go to 60, 70, 80% of away grounds and look to find something unique, parochial, emblematic...we don't find it, do we. This should be a fan priority.

Fair play. Fair play City and all involved, no matter what we think of the Suits/BristolSport etc. This could be (almost) unique (don't tell me Crystal ****** Palace do it), our Fab Four, our Ian MacMillan, our Maradona, our Albert Camus.

Sort of.

Have asked many times but got the knock back and have mixed feelings on seeing this now. Fans shook buckets and raised over £350 to do that mural just to see it knocked down and knocked back when asked to do some art replacements.. Spoon fed, box ticking as I said mixed feelings..

As an aside

What was also interesting last night was atm they have some form of boat exhibition / sales event in the Lansdown foyer and Marina Doman way with sparkling new leisure / fishing boats displayed in Marina Dolman Way - and trade stands in the Lansdown foyer great use of the facilities and valuable income

Real pity. Superb piece.

As Hunstile says pretty bland interior in the concourses, which can only be improved with a few well placed graphics. Only concern is that we need a 'visual flow' to all these various addition,  rather than randomly scattered around.

Hope some reference was made to the young, vibrant and unique culture you have in Bristol in the video that was mentioned at yesterday's event. If we want to attract young players that's the sort of thing they'll want to 'buy in' to. Got to say even a 100 miles away there is envy in our communities for parts of Bristol's culture.

What do they say, 'a great City is like a great party, you want to stay longer 'cause you're enjoying it'. Think we're on the way to producing a great stadium... hopefully, we can soon party on and off the pitch.

Just need some tables now!!!!!!!

That's sad - I had forgotten about that mural. Really unique and interesting area of the ground. Sad to see it just destroyed, would've been nice if it could've been preserved in some form.

I wonder if Inkie will write his name into the work with lettering bigger than the B.C.F.C logo , like he did on the car park wall behind the old east end ...... self importance boils my piss

Loving your Graf/Street Art knowledge. At least I'm not alone  My Background & Profile pic are from works I own by Nick Walker

Can't imagine Sickboy's work ticking the boxes but a big Jago or Paris abstract around the inside of the concourse. That said Paris is from Hull originally :fear:

Don't know about tables, but our friends in the North could probably lend us a few plastic chairs.

Voyder and Inkie were the artists involved. Andy Council will be coming in at the end of the month to add a robin over an image of the new stadium in a central panel.

It's a massive piece of work.

Inkie and Voyder have finished their parts......so any names of artists (if they are going to be added) will be added after Andy Council has completed his bit at the end of the month.

The finished piece with the stadium and Robin in the centre panel will look fantastic.

My only involvement was as the official photographer for Upfest.

It would be awesome in the old stadium. Not quite sure it fits into the new stadium. Looks tacky to me tbh.

But the disrespectful one falling off his ladder would be better if fans were as uncharitable in thought.

An Egghead piece did venture into ye old stand.

By Fans for Fans could be (almost) unique and done here before.

This by the suits, commissioned by the suits ..

So if we have Britains greatest living artist (according to a recent poll) as a fan and Britains greatest sitcom performer and writer (Mr Cleese) and the driving force behind one of Britains most progreesive bands (Mr M Attack) do we think Brunel would have been a City fan?

Ask Britain's best historian (and stadium compère (Tony Robinson)).

Yes no doubt. He was so fed up with travelling to away games on coach and horses one that he built a railway to take in the Swindon, Reading and London games.

Anyone else notice they painted on a loading spiral in the middle so it looks like it's loading before it's finished?

Very amusing.

Nice one. I would say Britains best popular TV archaeologist. Not sure who Simon Sharma supports but Surs or Arsenal woukd be my guess.

Yep spotted that thought it was funny also.

I know I don't visit Bristol very often these days but what are those buildings supposed to represent on the skyline - is one the old shot tower?

The latest Euro-style piece "he" did was very reminiscent of some of the album artwork from Protection I think.

Oh yeah, forgot to add that it's a disgrace etc etc that City are getting this done.

They could have saved time and money by just pinning a training top to the wall.

Nah, 'our' Tony is a master at everything, including British history. Doctor Alice is the best archaeologist and as a local lass living in LA, she is probably a City fan too.

Nice to note that Brunel was far-sighted. Despite being the founder member of the City Away Travel Service, couldn't quite bring himself to build a line/station to Eastvile, Trumpton and The Swamp, notwithstanding having built stations for lesser clubs like at St James' for Exeter. He's one of our own.

It's the climbing tower (the old Ritz cinema) on Winterstoke Road.

Then why use him? When proper fans can do similar??

Because we keep getting rebuffed by the club/suits, so 2 out of 3 ain't bad. It could be worse. It could be no local involvement at all. Of course, it could be better, too, and the club have promised things before, yes. Life turns out to be a compromise between the best and worst, for me: best case scenario it's 100% fan-led...worst case we have no involvement whatsoever and nothing is done at all, the walls are left grey. This isn't the best solution, but it's better than nothing for now and maybe fans'll be involved more elsewhere or painting over this one in future. I'm not in the know, just an observer, I don't have all the facts at my disposal as some do, but I'm just making an opinion based on what I know and think.

Posted

I think this is a great move by the club and is a really unique "Bristol" thing. Understand some fans will be put out by the fact they weren't consulted/the artists involved, but inherently, on the scale of good ideas to bad ideas this is undoubtedly "good".

When you add in the little touches on the stadium (wedlocks sign, the old clock etc) we are getting a decent, unique, concourse that shows our history.

I am however disappointed that nobody on OTIB has seen fit to throw a tantrum over the fact that the article says a similar Rugby piece of work is coming soon. We're slipping....

Posted

I think it's great too, despite the 'politics'.

Mindful the museum seems to have hit the buffers, temporarily one hopes, wonder if this or another mural could do a history of Ashton Gate stadium itself. Would be great to see the old half-time letter scoreboards, the sky blue disabled chariots, the old Turnstiles et al depicted in some way.

There, if they want some fans 'engagement', could open a competition for suggestions and a winning entry could have a 'Banksy' training top.

Can he do one for us so we can buy Ronaldo please? Cant believe one of my all time heroes is a City fan. I knew he was talented but not that talented. By my reckoning his dad must have been a fan, because if i have his rough age correct, City were not that great when he started watching. I assume this was in the 80's.

Think it would have been fair as this has been very much a thing fans have been at the front of before for there to have been some engagement. this looks to be a backward step and Bristol Sport missing a easy trick.

My small itk will tell you these facts!

Banksy has been a City fan since before the 80s...

He is a regular attendee at Ashton Gate ...

... and is, as we all know, notoriously secretive about his identity as well as his choice of subjects for his work. No one      " commissions" a Banksy!

Remember there was talk of fans doing the high sides of the 2 houses you walk between as you head towards the Dolman/Atyeo corner from Ashton Road.

Any update on this?

The one single player affecting the stalemate is their nr 17 (Aluko?). We look solid and it's not like watching Donald Duck (shit served for years). Great to see the commoradeship between COD and Vyner. They work together and push each other. Something for Baker and Flint to learn frtom. We look week in central midfield and one of those shots on counter attack will eventually go in. Smith out and Pack in. COD to the left and Paterson replaced by Eliasson playing on the right side of midfield. COYR!! Not everyday it's not total shit.

After a well known fan died the idea of fans mural came about. an artist was contacted about doing some work and was up for it. next time he was contacted his attitude changed 100% when he realised it was to do with Bristol City and in memory of fans who had passed on.  he was totally uninterested in even suggesting somebody who might be able to help out paint something for City fans who had died. it was disrespectful. and there he is painting at the home of fans he clearly thinks nothing of.

two years ago that. people were still waiting for the  get back to you in we'll get back to you. loose idea get local artists involved supporters groups and fans working together and it was suggested to Bristol Sport to use upfest. it was not the houses but the  side of the Atyeo or Dolman or car park wall.
