"Reality" TV question.

10 -15 years ago we had such documentary series as Ibiza uncovered, Greece uncovered and Club Reps etc. There were also game/dating shows such as The villa.

In the "uncovered" series there would be footage of topless young ladies on the beaches. In the Club Reps series they showed the cabaret the Reps perform on Wednesday nights. As part of the show, the blokes strip completely on stage and the female reps go topless. In The villa the four young men and four young women all stripped off and jumped in the pool.

Currently we have such programmes as Ex on the beach and Love Island. One glossy mag showed the women taking part in those programmes all sunbathed topless befor ethe filming started to get "a good, overall tan". Oddly no one in those programmes or when TOWIE went to Marbella does anyone go topless.

Has a new morality descended on the participants or have new rules regarding what is permissable to be shown been introduced.

Surely it should should be called "unreality television". There is nothing about those programmes that reflects real life in the slightest. Apart from those who crave their 15 minutes of fame in the hope of making a quick buck and having their autobiographys ghosted for them and published the following Christmas!

Reality TV = oxymoron.

Scientists have longed faced the problem of the very act of observing something alters the experiment.

The aspect of what is considered appropriate or acceptable to show on our TVs is another matter. Certainly we may consider ourselves to have a more relaxed, knowledgeable or open attitude to things that were once taboo or hidden in darkness. However, it is sometimes a process that leads to less acceptance. Stuff that happened years ago did so for a reason, and those reasons can change. 'Today' is usually a reaction to 'yesterday', not an ongoing urge to reach an anointed heaven. History can go in cycles, no...?
