Silvio Dante
I like Liam. Comes across as bright with his head screwed on. And he probably got a lucky break when we forgot to post his contract...

Simon79
Caught a tv piece fairly recently which featured Liam Rosenior. It was something to do with the community work Brighton do, in particular with children with special needs. He came across really well imo & I was very impressed. spudski
Trumps just a puppet....other more powerful people are pulling his strings, and will eventually get what they want...greater powers and laws enforced...order from chaos and fear. Take away those ruling the world, governments, flags, borders and false religion....and we as people would pretty much get on fine, regardless of whatever place in the world you were born, race or colour. pride of the west
Trumps beef is not them protesting but the way in which they chose to do it, rightly or wrongly. He sees them chosen to kneel at the anthem disrespecting the anthem and flag. And so do the majority of supporters booing their own players whilst doing so. hoxton casual
Another sports v politics debate. History always seems to look kindly on the sportsmen who use their influence and privilege to make the world a better place. Always taken against The Roseniors because of that incident, but may have to re-evaluate.

The athletes are making a stand against something that they feel is endemically wrong in their country, and 'respecting the anthem and the flag' is redundant if your country, its police force and its President are openly discriminating against you. Even if he sees it as disrespecting the anthem and the flag, being Americans means they have every right to do that. By the same token, he has every right to criticise them for doing it. What he does not have the right to do is to call for them to be sacked for exercising their right to free speech. That contravenes American values and demeans his office. On a side note, I've read a few of Liam Rosenior's blogs this season. His one on Tony Pulis the other week was excellent. He is clearly a very smart guy who thinks deeply about football. He's openly stated he has managerial aspirations there is plenty of reason based on his blogs to think he'll be well-suited to it.
pongo88
Jon Sopel’s book “If only they didn’t speak English” illustrates the problem. Because Americans speak a form of English, most people expect them to have English / UK values and behave as we do. In reality the USA is a foreign county and things are different. Liam Rosenior’s experience is, unfortunately, fairly common in parts of the USA. Not everywhere, but in a lot of places. There is also an underlying attitude to foreigners - just try getting through customs at a USA airport!

I could equally well argue that your attempt at humour was ill-judged and misdirected - and for that matter not funny either. As most people who know me would testify, I don't lack a sense of humour, but there's something more important than that which is central to this thread, which is essentially what I was trying to point out. Let's just say we disagree about who's tetchy and whose sense of irony is malfunctioning and leave at at that, shall we?

Was going to say the same. They have the right to protest as Americans. It's one of the main foundations of the country. What trump is doing is trying to get the NFL to lay down consequences for doing so which as employers they could do. Think the ratings have taken a hit as well but the cause is just, imo. I hope if the NFL does try to implement consequences that the players come together as a whole to fight it. The players are part of a union so should be ok if they held strong. Being from there, it's a bit of a shambles at the moment. Trump, if you look no further than his character isn't up to scratch let alone his ability politically. The point of the protest is to bring light to injustices of minorities and tbf they've got a point. As a whole they aren't treated similarly. The problem is it's become an argument of disrespecting a piece of cloth. The agonising part is the uneducated that just think it represents this perfect world. It's supposed to represent freedom and equality for all people who reside there and sadly that isn't happening thus the protesting. Anyway, I know it wasn't the whole point of the thread but been thinking about it quite a bit lately.

reddevon
Don't know much about American sport but why do they play the National Anthem at what is an "internal game" and not an international. Are "foreign" players allowed in the NFL? Do they play the NA at Baseball or Basketball games? Can you imagine playing our NA at a top Prem match! Foreign players are allowed as they are at their other sports, anthem is played before all the games in the respective sports as well. Sometimes you get the Canadian anthem too! Not in NFL but certainly in NBA, NHL, MLS and MLB. Up here the US anthem is widely respected by fans with often as many singing The Star Spangled Banner as Oh Canada. In fact at an NHL game earlier this year in Edmonton, Alberta with US team Anaheim Ducks in town the singer's mic failed so the entire Canadian crowd sang the US anthem instead. Perfectly. You can find it on YouTube if interested, a real hair standing on end moment. Don't think the Anaheim home crowd or any other US home crowd for that matter would have been able to return the favour!
