Leading on from the brilliantly titled thread last week about England.

Personally, my passion/interest for the England national team has been severely tested over the last few years, with Euro 2016 being the final straw.

Be interested to see what people think re: the poll.

If I'd set this poll 10+ years ago, I would have (probably) answered England. Now? Bristol City winning promotion every time.

Completely agree, used to say England as it would be such as massive thing to enjoy with all friends

But nowadays it would be City every day of the week

Same as above.  Twenty years ago it would have been England winning the World Cup, no question at all.

Now I take the view that if the majority of the England team can't be bothered then I don't see why I should be either.

The Bristol City players do very much still care about their team so that's who I want to succeed.

I didn't watch a single minute of the two England games; twenty years ago I wouldn't have missed a single minute.

I used to follow both ardently and attended Mexico 86, Germany 88, Italy 90 and Sweden 92 plus a couple of games at Euro 96 and Germany 2006. Now, I'll watch England on the tele but am not really that bothered. The fact Russia are hosting and then Qatar doesn't help but it's CIty all day long for me.

I will watch next summers world cup and would love England to do well but won't get too carried away like I used to.

Said it before. The more I watch England the more I realise it's only City I love and care about

The more i watch the premier league the more i hate it.

World cup win for me it's a bigger achievement.

It has to be City.  Whilst I would love to see England win the world cup in my life time, it would be a buzz for a few weeks - at most to the next failure friendly a few weeks later.

With City this is a minimum of one season with many sold out games against the so-called "cream of the crop".

We will also end up finding out if Pack IS better than Henderson !!

Bristol City or England? The answer is Bristol City.

But Premiership promotion v World Cup isn't a like for like comparison in my opinion. I should see BC in the Premiership in my lifetime but I doubt England will win the World Cup so I chose the latter.

Premiership Champions v World Cup winners and I'd chose the Prem.

To break the pattern it is England to win the World Cup over anything City will ever or can achieve. Let's not kid ourselves, if England by some miracle find themselves in the Semis next summer then all the crap football will be forgotten and almost everyone will be watching.

And when/if we ever win it again, the national hysteria and celebration will far exceed anything that City could produce. I don't think it'll happen any time soon, but it isn't really comparable in my opinion.

City all day long. Used to get caught up in the media hype going into every tournament, but since the so called golden generations shoot out failures and Rooney's outburst against the fans in 2010, my patience for England has ran out.

You know, I'm not sure that's true. We're just not that good anymore. Loads of reasons why we always underachieve (which I won't go into), but I do believe the players care.

Can we at least get to the Prem and then hate it afterwards??!

Surely it should be winning the premier league? Not sure getting there should be compared to a world cup win.

I actually think the atmosphere in the country would be amazing. And last several months. But, City first for me.

Couldnt give a t0ss about England.

Players are dreadful but are so overhyped i guess they believe theyre superstars even though a lot of them wouldnt stand out a great deal at championship level.

Negative mindset, tactics and this incessant need for meaningless keep ball in our own half drives me mad. English football was always wing play, pace, power and strength and failing that, very direct.

Why we try to be like everyone else is beyond me. Wish we’d go back to basics and not try to conform to the Spain tippy-tap bullsh1t we have spent years trying to replicate ( very badly ).

I'm trying to be realistic. More chance of England winning the WC than us winning the Prem. Ok, Eng are useless, but surely that's more likely to happen?

Definitely City. England winning the world cup would be amazing but:

a) Bristol City getting promoted would feel more special to me personally.

b) England winning the world cup would lead to embarrassing scenes of every non-football supporting politician, TV host and celebrity trying to make it all about them.

c) the hype for future tournaments in the press would be unbearable.

Club every time. In fact I think I'm more interested in individual players, so Hordour for Iceland, Callum for Eire is much more interesting and relevant than Henderson, etc for England.

Posted

City going up certainly.

I recall around me at AG 10 years ago when we failed to reach the Euros, a general consensus seemed to be club over country even then.

International football generally...definitely good matches, teams to watch as a neutral but England bore the hell out of me mostly unfortunately.

Which could lead us on to a different question: imagine a scenario when a City player, (two above for e.g. although can't see Mags staying beyond Jan) playing for his country, scores against Eng, would you cheer/be happy/smile/curse?

Posted

I voted for England to win the world cup simply because it's only ever 4 years and city have a chance every season, plus it did not say you could not have one without the other never happening.

Posted

I would like the idea of winning promotion to the Premier League but once there not so sure it would be that enjoyable so it's England for me

Who wouldn't miss the national bed wetting when we reach the knock out stages  before being knocked out because of penalties/cheating Argies/deflected free-kicks/should have been sent off Dutch players/Kevin Keegan/Elieen Drury/A petulant flick/a dodgy ruled out goal from a corner/a flukey free-kick/David Batty/Gazzy being short/Paul Ince/Chris Waddle's dream of puting an object into space/allegations of theft/Peter Sodding Bonnetti/Jamie Carragher.

Couldn't give a toss about international football.

I grew up watching Bristol City with my Dad and this will always be my #1 football team.

England are just some moany gits who stop the regular club football every few months so they can scrape by random other countries to then perform poorly on the bigger stage. I didn't go to their games as a kid, didn't queue to meet their players, they're not a community I grew up feeling a part of, didn't go to their Christmas parties and get a picture with a favourite player.

International football is just a collection of players from teams I don't like.

Posted

England for me, whilst I agree the football has been pretty horrendous I just can't help imagining how the feeling would be if we won the World Cup again!!

i think that feeling would elapse the city to premier. Just my thoughts

Posted

For me it would be without a shadow of doubt England winning the World Cup.

Those two aren't even comparable. England winning footballs most prestigious international competition, or Bristol City playing in the top-flight.

Now, if we're talking about Bristol City winning the Premier League, that's a different story.

I have to say that this is a little tricky poll isn't it?

Is the premier league all it's cracked up to be? Haven't watched for years, I have no interest in watching Man U, Chelski, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs walk the league every year (aside from the Leicester year obviously, when actually I was a bit interested).

These guys are overpaid, brain dead morons.

And then there's the England team. Who lost all my respect when they played here in 2010. Rooney was a complete disgrace that night, he was awful and treated the fans like garbage - who pays your wages mate (oh yes sky TV).

So by a hair its BCFC to be promoted.

Really good point about the Premier League. There would be a few things lots of us wouldn't like if we got there (stupid kick off times, a few hidings,  watching the antics of some of the "superstars" etc). Having said that, it would raise the profile of our club and give us more clout financially if we found ourselves back in the Championship.

Posted

Some of you have pointed out I should have given the option of City winning the Prem. But, whilst the chances of England winning the WC are remote, the chances of us winning the Prem are zero. So, being realistic here.

Let's also be honest, we are far more likely to get promoted than England are of winning anything.

Curse, surely? City players are transient, your country isn't.

Having said that it's City first for me and it will take a lot to see me ever passionate about the England team again.

Perhaps, yes if it ever came down to it but I think I'd manage a rue smile really. Let's face it Bristol City are never going to have players who will be better than anyone playing for England so if one of ours manages to score against the Premiership's finest then you got to crack a smile haven't you. If England gets outdone by a mere Bristol City player playing for a lower ranked nation then they deserve to be defeated.

I said I've lost alot of interest in the England team RedM. but I still watch the games as an England fan and would always want them to win.

I also live in hope a manager/team will yet come along to resurrect my previous passion for the national team.

I support all players in a Red City shirt and want all our players to do well on international duty - but that would go out the window if they were playing against England.

No conflict of interests for me - I always want Bristol City to win and the same goes for England, simple as that.

I was in West Germany (as it was then) when they won in '90 - the place went ballistic. A world cup win brings a country together.
The World Cup transcends club football (on winning the final) every time for me.

To add a realistic note: England have won it once in my lifetime (the only time and I was a mere babe so never got to experience the atmosphere) and City have been in the top division in that time also. I suspect that City will get to the top division before England win the World Cup again.

Posted

Not sure I follow the reasoning from a lot on here: I don't like the overpaid prima donnas, but I do want City to join the league that created the overpaid prima donnas.

I went for England because I think in my lifetime I will see City promoted to the Prem, possibly more than once, whereas I doubt I'll ever see us winning the World Cup. Therefore, if it were a choice of what happens in 2018, I'd go for England - City then have another 3 years to secure promotion before I can ask the OTIB genie for another wish!

Posted

I care way more about City than England but if England did win a major trophy in my lifetime it'd be great... also getting to the premiership isn't the be all... tin hat time... but for me England!

Don't follow England really in the same way, city is pretty much every week so i have a much closer love to the club than the country. Don't go to England games so instantly the fact of not being there will be a massive disadvantage. Saying that, winning the world cup over promotion is a bigger thing, as much as i would love to see us get to the prem it hardly compares to winning the world cup but if it was us winning the prem then i would say city all the time but i will see pigs fly before i see this.

I've had plently of snakes this year on my opinions of lee johnson. Being a proud englishman comes before club for me however unpopular with the city die hards.

I used to love watching England, I was spoiled as the first major tournament I remember was Italia 90. I enjoyed the era’s of Venables, Hoddle, Sven, watching England was a massive social event, going out with the boys, few beers, the agony, the ecstasy, it was never dull! Then along came Roy Hodgson in 2012, boring football, the team being set up not to lose, rather than going out to win. The abject performance at Euro 2016 (Wales aside) and people like Sam Allardyce and Gareth Southgate getting the job that the great Brian Clough craved, but never got, sums up just how dire the whole FA/ England situation is. I said last week that if England were now playing in my garden, I’d pull the curtains! City for me all the way.

City for me every time.  I'm 72 and there is no way that I will see England win the World Cup again in my lifetime, it's just not going to happen, now, City getting into the Premier League, well that's a possibility. I was 30 when AD and the boys got into the old Div 1 and I enjoyed those few seasons,  I really hope that I will see City in the top flight again.  Although I'm still not fully convinced about LJ,  I want to see the club in the top division, before I shuffle off this mortal coil!     COYR's

I suspect that perhaps a lot of the club v country judgements would change if England were actually good and had a strong chance in the World Cup.

Let's face it, if that were the case, the chance only comes up once in four years, so it's a difficult choice. If I really thought England could win the World Cup in 2018, then I would choose that with City to be propmoted in 2019.

City of course.

If England won the world cup, with the current squad, it would be pure luck and bad performances by every other team. Not because they are actually the best in the world.

Now city in the other hand. You can see we are playing so well and can Improve upon that, so would be genuinely earned.
