Defending of Set Pieces

Is this going to be a consistent problem?

Last three home games we've only conceded from free kicks. Tonight's two and Ibrahimovic.

The wall hasn't done it's job on two occasions and the header at the back post today came from nowhere. Seems like we're switching off a bit when the ball is dead. Why?... And how can we combat this?

All of the three were also conceded in the second half and with Luke Steele in goal. Not sure if those two points are quite as relevant but we're going to become a little more familiar with Luke Steele in the next couple of weeks so might wanna look at it as soon as possible.

I think wasn't helped by the fact The lad on free kicks tonight was the best dead ball specialist I've ever seen at this level. And Ibrahimovic has the quality to score a set piece against anyone in the world.

a little worrying but again probably some perspective needed

Agreed that Douglas has an immaculate left foot for their set-pieces but I did feel that Steele wasn’t on the same page as his wall.

Before the kick, Pack is standing with the Wolves player who is trying to disrupt the wall. Steele tells Pack to move and split to the side. Pack looks at him and seems to suggest “what the **** are you on - you want me to leave this guy in the wall with nothing behind him”.

Steele placed Pack in an area in which he wasn’t required, he only succeeded in being in the way. Steele should have had that side of the goal wrapped up.

Poor wall organisation in my opinion.

Vs Man Utd the wall doesn't look too bad, I'd question just what the players are doing of the end of it. It is deflected but it is also keepers side and seems to go through him 3:25 below

Yesterday again the wall looks reasonable , but. We have players wandering off the end of it and possibly blocking Steeles view. That said, it is the keepers side again , I know deflected but again very close to him. 8:40 below

I always think, set the wall for one side and let the keeper take the other. Then if they score you know it's a good FK, yesterday Steel looks to move to his left expecting a shot over the wall, makes it that much harder to save the deflected shot.

Just posted on another thread. Look at long range shots in general. Forest and Villa home games

Whilst I worry about our defending of free kicks, I am also concerned that we dont seem to create a lot from our own set pieces. In a tight game, a corner or a set piece may be the only way to win it.

Yesterday may have been a game to far though, I thought we looked a bit leggy in the 2nd half as fatigue and injuries begin to take their toll.

Wolves are a good team though and were the better on the day and we very nearly got what would have been a good point.

Both took deflections , as did the ManU and first FK yesterday. I'd question Steele for the 2 FK's as they were his side, still not easy with deflections. The 2 long shots above , just unlucky and not really saveable .
