SL said at a fans q&a at crewe(?) that jon desperately wanted to go to a game at the gate as all his mates were going. His school had some sort of a ticket offer on so sl took him. The rest as they say is history.

His Dad, who as a youth went to Eastville, couldn’t be arsed driving all the way to Bath and so took Jon to Ashton Gate instead. Result, Jon become hooked on us and his Dad went along to games to please his son. Moral of the story: Don’t burn your main stand down for the insurance money and don’t move to Bath, if you want a billionaire benefactor. Plus City chairman Des Williams was a client of Lansdown's. So, even if he wasn't short of a bob or two, SL asked for a couple of complimentaries - you don't get to where he is today by paying for something you could have got for nowt! Also, as 22AR alludes to, the Blue Few's woes go way back beyond the South Stand at Eastville burning down - they were actively looking to sell their ground as far back as the 1930s, ie virtually from the minute they joined the Football League. Their current predicament has been a long time in the making and long may it continue.

Who were the Dunfords and Barry Bradshaw getting their financial advice from, then, if not HL - some bloke up the Lamb in Cadbury Heath?

supercidered
I reckon he would have let it run down to a crumbling sh!tehole with load of plastic chairs and cheap and nasty tents and employ a Dog Handler to run the Gaff. Hmmm hang on a minute!

He attended one meeting as an observer. The Rovers' directors were discussing selling Eastville and renting it back. Harry spoke up saying that was a backward move. He was told there & then that with thinking like that he'd be better off at City. And the rest is history. One thing the Rovers board have got right then! Who would have become chairman / owner of Bristol City Football Club without Mr Lansdown? Perhaps another wealthy benefactor would've liked to own the recognised number 1 team within such a large city. For all we know, Richard Branson could have bought us, and we'd now be called Bristol Virgin City. Come on you Virgins! Up the Virgins ?
