I'd say it depends on who we're playing, in my experience. For Burton I'm sure there will be plenty of City fans around in red, I personally wouldn't worry about it. It's hardly an intense rivalry.

You couldn’t have picked a “nicer” first away game. You’ll be fine in colours at Burton.

Wolves, Leeds, Sheffield, Coventry, and many others. Not so much..!

Enjoy your day!

Driving up,

As "Bar" says below, Burton is/should be a good one to start with but to be on the safe side you could avoid displaying colours in motorway services and on the way to and back, and if calling into any pubs, and in this weather, covering up until at/or in the ground.

Have you been to their new ground..?!

I shit you not... the first time I went there, with no ticket, the stewards called me “sir” invited me to park in the car park and have a beer, whilst they sorted out our tickets, then brought the tickets over to us and apologised for any inconvenience..!

A tad different to the “Ninian experience”..!

Maybe it was the colour of your shirt that confused them

Intentionally so. The away numbers were disappearing, and with not enough home support they needed to do something.

It's noticeable to me that we are taking 1750 to Burton but nothing like as much to Derby, 11 miles up the road, or Wolves, quite a bit nearer than Burton.

Derby was on a Friday night (live on Sky) & Wolves was midweek, so not really “like for like” comparisons.

No,I was told by another supporter, when going away don't wear team colours,

The bigger issue is some bars may not let away fans in wearing colours, but as others have alluded to above Burton is one place you will not have any problems

The main attraction for Burton is the standing terrace. I love them. I expect loads of others feel the same way. Burton/Brentford/Peterborough all great away days.

Never not worn colours to an away game. If your not being a knob then you'll be fine.

I have been both a knob, and not being a knob, at away games over the years, and attracted unwelcome attention either way. Not being a knob is no guarantee of a trouble free visit, in my experience (unless I'm labouring under some misapprehension about the "not being a knob" period?)

The only time I've had bother and that was Swindon 14/15. Being slowly escorted to and from the station whilst the locals were coming out of every rat run and alley.

Derby was on a Saturday last year, and there was nowhere near 1700 there. Ok, we were struggling but it's a big difference. Wolves, our numbers there have been much lower - compared to say West Brom - there for many years. Birmingham, it's a bit further than Reading and we take about half to Brum than we do to Reading. Millwall, some will skip that one but will flock to Fulham.

You know that both of those other examples we midweek though, yeah..? With Derby also live on TV.

Indeed, my first experience of Ninian Park were coins flying through the air, followed by bottles of piss.

In my experience it can very much depend on how you are travelling to a game and what you intend on doing whilst there which determines if its 'safe' to wear club colours. If for example you were travelling on official coaches and entering the groud as soon as you arrive there is never an issue. If however you are travelling up privately - early - and going on a beer fest then I think it advisable to be a little more low key.

Even the so called 'trouble' games are nowhere near like it used to be say 10-20 years ago. The days of running a gauntlet of hate and trying to get back to your car safely after games at the likes of Stoke, old Millwall ground, Leeds & Swansea are thankfully now confined to descriptions in books.

Enjoy your first away game experience

As many have already stated you are ok these days to wear your teams colours to any ground....as long as you don't act the bigun...

however be aware that some pubs do not allow team colours to be worn

The good old days! Followed by a shower of bricks in the car park and having the glass from the coach windows raining down on you, whilst being told by the old bill “good luck, we’re off in 10 mins” from behind their riot shields..!

Burton will be fine. Most grounds are these days yes games like Cardiff and Millwall but can't think of others where I would consider not wearing my shirt. Enjoy the experience I feel it is so much better away than at the gate.

Generally I'd agree, but I heard a lone City fan in colours and bothering nobody was attacked after the PNE match.

To be fair to some wearing club colours means you are less likely to experience any trouble or hostility towards you.

Generally so called lads don't start on shirters and scarfers.

Fair enough, that wasn't clear from reports on facebook or the PNE forum.

Very shocking and upsetting for the whole family then.

Ended up in hospital by all accounts, a cheap shot from behind then put the boot in while  he was on the ground. The PNE fans are up in arms about it to be fair to them.

100% accurate...
it was my brother in law it happened to,my son also got punched
we were walking back to the car & a couple of pne fans gave us abuse ,we told them to hush & carried on walking..
next thing we were surrounded & started on.
99.9% of the preston fans were superb & helped until the ambulance turned up..

The poor bloke posted on here the other day and mentioned about getting punched and said it was a cowardly attack from behind.

I take our kid (17 year old) and a couple of his mates to most away games and to be honest, there are a few stadiums that I say don't show any colours (mainly cos I drive and we have to walk through the home fans) but I think the only violence I've heard of this season was at Sheffield Utd a few punches were thrown probably cos we just beat them in the final minute so emotions were running high and of course what happened at Preston with that bloke.  Burton is probably one of the friendliest grounds going along with Norwich

I'm really sorry to hear this Pommers and, obviously, I hope all concerned are ok.

personally I've always chosen not to wear colours at away games and never had any trouble over the years.

it's a personal choice.

Accents are very recognisable so sometimes you may want to keep your mouth shut in certain places. Ooh arr.

You don't realise til your out of the City how strong your accent is. I didn't think mine was too potent til I went oop north to Leicester and got the piss ripped out of me the whole time.

It's Burton in fairness though, probably the friendliest away day in the league atm, maybe after Reading or Norwich.

Whatever you do don't wear a rosette, asking for trouble

I wear colours when I go away (because my kid wears hers and likes me to too) - Go to about 4 or 5 away games a year and walk back to car through home fans and never had any hint of trouble.  Lost my current shirt so will just be the smock coat and piece of straw to chew tomorrow. I've always find home fans pretty friendly and up for a chat.

Not surprised in the slightest, never understood the love in for that lot. When we played them in our promotion season years ago a mate on his own in a pub, couldn't get a ticket but came up as we were all staying in Blackpool. Load of lads came in a gave him a hiding . Same game a load of them came down the street attacking young lads in shirts and scarfs, scum.

Believe it or not there are some home fan only pubs in Burton. The large one when you come out of the station and turn right and walk 100 yards towards the town centre from memory (Devonshire?) has bouncers on and signs up about it. The smaller pub Roebuck right next to the station is fine (but small).
