Saw this earlier on my feed- didn't know they had stewards in the 70's at football! (Picture is apparently stewards ejecting a hooligan at a Southampton game v Man Utd 1977).

Not much consideration for Health & Safety- they look a bit more robust too than a lot today do. :laughcont:

People in white coats leading fans away is something that still happens at the Mem .

A couple of caring medical staff I think, the poor fan was complaining of a cricked neck apparently.

Look how the sympathetic medic on the right is consoling him.

I think he is trying to lighten his spirits with a game of 'Rock, Paper, Sissors'

He should have told his mate Jason King - he seems to prefer a game of Hangman.

That game is 1977. In the early 70s some hooligans at many clubs wore white butchers coats for some reason.

Millwall. A game in about 71 remember they were in the East End early, few of them had there coats ripped off as they legged it across the pitch to the park end.

A fire of the coats then happened in the east end, lads whooping going mad.

Ten minutes later the main mob of Millwall fans had made there way down from Parson Street and entered the east end.

All hell broke loose, as a 15,16 year at the time was a scary day at the gate that I still remember.

I think that's the game where we had them trapped in the far corner and as they were going over the fence to get out we had some lads from the malago and knowle waiting for them.....i loved saturdays!

According to my research Southampton didn't have any specialists pitch side, so they re-deployed the hard bar-stewards.

seems get darted wasn't quite enough for this Man Yoo fan.

Man.Utd fan at Anfield.

City were at QPR that day and I remember seeing that picture on the front page of a bundle of newspapers outside a newsagents in Soho in the early hours, already put out for the Sunday morning.

May well have been the same day a City fan threw a dart on to the pitch at Loftus Road.

I always thought that pic was from Ayresome Park, you could well be right though.

..was that 71 ?.....I remember the event and all the shenanigans but date wise it tends to be a blur ! One of my ever abiding mental images of the East End will always be some ' big ' Millwall fan with ' pride of London' on the back of a flowing white 'butchers coat' sprinting past me on his way to the pitch and safety !
