Lee Miller

I still can't believe how the ball didn't go in at Swindon. Despite that miss he was a pretty decent player. I might be mis-remembering, but didn't he get signed on the recommendation of some Scottish based City fans?

The qpr one was insane. They had just scored a fluke free kick and were goading us as their goal music was still ringing out when lee miller smashed it in. Cue absolute scenes in the away end. I think it’s fair to say we gave it back and then some.:clapping:

I remember that well. Great celebrations for that goal. I went to that game with one of my best friends who lived in London at the time and isn't much of a football fan - he was going as crazy as everyone else and still talks about it now.

Think all 3 scored on the opening day of the season once when we put 5 past Notts County.

It should have been 6-0 that day; we had a perfectly good goal disallowed.

2003/4 season. Was at my brothers wedding that day swearing my ####### arse off, if you think today was hot.....

Loved it back then with all the bristol boys in the team.

I flew to Ibiza that day (it was the first home game i'd missed for many many years)

My Rovers supporting mates I was with were already panicking that we'd walk the league that year once they saw what the score was.

That miss at swindle. I was right in front of it and could've put it in with my knob. It was that close!

How he missed it I'll never know.

There was a good player in there somewhere but sadly, he couldn't stand up to the rigours of League 1 football. He is the reason why I started questioning buying scottish

It really isn't that bad looking back at it, the keeper coming out does enough to stop him heading directly at goal and he tries to flick inside the far post.... I have seen worse for sure.

Watching that Miller chance back it doesn’t seem as bad now but stood on the terrace at the time it all seemed to happen in slow motion and like others I was celebrating before he even got his head on it, thinking that there’s no way he can miss!

Always thought the turning point that season was following our amazing winning run - not the loss to Sheffield Wednesday that everyone remembers, but instead the miserable 1-1 home draw that followed in the midweek against a terrible Wycombe side (I think they were managed by Tony Adams at the time?).

Had we won that I would have been pretty confident we'd have got back to a decent run, but instead that equaliser and draw seemed to knock the wind out of us and I think we went on to stutter to something like 1 win in 7.

I'm sure it was Jermaine McSporran that grabbed their goal, I can still visualise it hitting the net in front of me as I stood in the East End :(

Wasn’t he spotted by a fan or group of fans, watching  a random game in Scotland and recommended to City, who subsequently signed him, or is that an urban myth?

I remember that  too. The fans were commended at the time by the club and their pics were in the papers etc and then straight after the Swindon game they all received  life bans.

Ah yes- I always thought we'd blown it when we lost 2-0 at home to Oldham in the rain that same month- thinking back we could have played all day and wouldn't have scored. Was a game I was sure we'd win too...

Thing that makes it worse, we then raised it and stepped it up again in the last month or so- beat QPR, beat Plymouth who were runaway leaders, drew with Brighton and Swindon- the latter of course featuring the Miller miss...

A game at Luton the week after Swindon really stands out for me, we’d come back from 2-0 down in the second half to level at 2-2, in injury time we had an effort cleared off the line, Luton went straight up the other end and scored. Luton’s second goal was controversial as the Ref said it had crossed the line with Flapper & co protesting vigorously that it hadn’t.

The maddening thing about that Swindon miss was that Christian Roberts had been playing an absolute blinder and then, inexplicably, Danny Wilson took him off and brought on Lee Miller.

("Never substitute a goalscorer" Brian Clough)

Roberts would have buried that chance but Miller had just come off the bench and was not up with play/warmed up/playing on instinct/ was rusty, however you want to call it.

I was sitting with the Swindon fans and can still see the away end almost groaning and heaving and roaring, en masse, with complete disbelief, incomprehension, and disappointment at the miss............................................

One of the three Lees, Miller, Peacock & Matthews.

I always thought there was a better player in there than we saw during his time at City.

First day of the 2003-04 season, all three Lees scored in a 5-0 win. My notes from that time. Interesting to not that some teams we played then are now in the Prem whilst others are National League.

The same day Scott Murray signed for Reading, Liam Rosenior walked out on the club and began training with Fulham.  The club released Peter Beadle, but when the coming season’s squad numbers was announced, no name was allocated the 7 or 10 shirts.  In mid July, it transpired the club had been in talks to bring a pair of Under 21 Internationals to Ashton Gate, Lee Miller, a free scoring Scottish forward from Falkirk and Luke Wilkshire, an Australian midfielder, from Middlesbrough. This was heartening to the supporters who had seen all other 2nd division clubs strengthening their squads whilst City, seemingly, did nothing.  They each cost £300,000 and went into the team for the opening game of the 2003/04 season, which was home to Notts County.  Lee Peacock scored twice, then Miller made it 3-0.  Luke Wilkshire was putting some good crosses in from the right wing and hit the bar with one of them.  Lee Matthews came on as a substitute for the first time in nearly a year and scored two more to secure an emphatic 5-0 win.  This was followed with a 4-1 triumph, albeit after extra time, over Swansea in the League Cup.  The goals then dried up as City lost at Colchester and they then became draw specialists with 1-1 draws at home to Peterborough and Hartlepool following goal less encounters at Bournemouth and Wrexham.

I was in the away end that day. It was so obvious he couldn’t miss that I started celebrating as soon as the ball left his head and was still celebrating the “goal” for at least 5-10 seconds after he missed.

Nothing worse than the howls of derision from the opposition fans after something like that - it`s like when one gets disallowed and you just want the earth to open up!

The only thing worse is when your keeper saves a penalty and you go apeshit only for someone to pop the rebound in!
