Hamburg relegated & stadium fire

- "We are Hamburg, and not you!" sing other HSV fans in the direction of the ultras. Police were on the pitch but have now moved outside the stadium where some of the ultras have already left the stadium. It seems that referee Felix Brych still wants to play the final few minutes here.

- Sad, sad scenes in Hamburg as the black smoke billows from the ultras' block.

They carried on playing as it burned it seems

That is awful, what were they thinking whoever started it?

90+17' - FULL TIME IN HAMBURG
The referee finally gets the game back underway, Pollersbeck kicks the ball upfield, and the final whistle blows. After 54 years, the Bundesliga's only remaining founder member is relegated to division two. Applause from the majority of fans.

There was no fire, black smoke is used as a symbol of something that had died, passed away etc, death isn’t it.

Personally think it looks good, maybe the players could have tried a bit harder during the season and they wouldn’t have had these scenes.

I thought this thread was about Hamburg, not City!

To put this in some context, Hamburg were the only club to be ever-present in the German top flight since the creation of the Bundesliga in 1963 (before that German football was organised on a regional basis and Bayern didn't join the new national league until 1964).

In recent years there has been a lot of unrest there between fans and club hierarchy and the black smoke bombs evidently signify the "death" of the club as a top-flight outfit / as the fans know it.

It still can't be condoned, of course. But that's the background.

There was no actual 'fire' and the final few minutes of the game were played out a few minutes later.

I follow FC Koln  (Cologne). They finished below Hamburg and were thus also relegated but the passionate fans of the Billy Goats didn't go bleating about it.

They are a bit of a yo yo club in comparison though in all Carey fairness.

Spot on. Last season they qualified for the Europa Cup yet this season finished bottom. They never adequately replaced Anthony Modeste their goal machine from last season. His replacement was signed, I believe, for €17M and I'm sure the Koln supporters would rather have spent half that on Diony. They would've had the same return in the goals column for 50% of the outlay.

Relegation the German way - light the place up with flares to demonstrate your dissatisfaction.

Relegation the British way - Sky camera cuts to a 10 year old kid saying “oh well”.

Everybody and everything has it too nicely in this country. You can’t really blame players these days in Britain for not showing much of an interest at times because that’s the mentality now. The youth coming through, that’s all they know.

The next thought from a player these days is deciding the best instagram photo of the previous game, shopping for the best designer gear or what the next tattoo is going to be!

The Germans have it spot on. In fact, everywhere else does..

I lived in Hamburg for a year or so in the '90's. The other club, Hamburg St.Pauli was always well supported by the locals. Currently in Bundesliga2...great little ground at the end of the Reeperbahn, passionate fans, great derbies ahead me thinks:dance:

Scene like this show how sterile watching football in this country gas become.

The fences and barbed wire show how much the authorities like it there too!

there would be outrage if fans were caged in like that in this country these days, and rightly so.

In Holland away fans are put in pens, usually perpex all round etc, or in fences.

Absolutely no issues at all, as it is all managed correctly.

Point taken. Various camera angles tonight of full grown adults from the Derby end crying their eyes out :sad26:
