The one thing you'd like the club to do ?

Today you have a wish , the club must do one thing that you tell them to do , what do you want ?

Don't be vague like saying ' get promoted ' because the club can't just wave a magic wand and do that but something that is possible .

I would like them to bring in a Director of Football, an experienced old head who could guide and help our young coaches fulfill their potential and most importantly stand up to SL and the other corporate suits and defend the notion that we are a FOOTBALL club .

I have said a proper Director of Football elsewhere.

I like the Director of Football / First Team Coach model and prefer it to the Manager who does everything because it provides a bit of long term strategy and I genuinely thought that was the model we were setting up.

But we have neglected to appoint a Director of Football.  So yes, what the Major said.  Please do this.

I'm not suggesting that they replace anybody; I think that this is an ufilled vacancy.

Who would you bring in as the old head?  If SL offered enough money and incentives, Moyes?

I don't have a short list but I would love Joe Jordan for example , I think Moyes and that age group still have too much to prove and wouldn't be happy to be behind the scenes so to speak.

The problem with the DoF role in England is it tends not to work for the precise reason that it tends to get offered to people who skill lies in the managerial role and who'd rather be in the managerial role. What clubs like Barcelona do is treat the Director of Football role as a specialist role and not give it to an experienced manager who wants to be managing but someone whose skills and interests suit the role.

If we want to appoint an experienced manager, I'd rather not beat around the bush bringing them in a different capacity where they can only undermine the manager but sack LJ and give them the managerial role. I'd rather we appoint a good Director of Football than a manager as a square peg in a round hole.

To be honest I am not crystal clear how the two roles interact and I think that may be because they work differently everywhere.  I understand that when Kenny Dalglish was DoF at Blackburn his duties comprised playing golf and then turning up for matches and board meetings.

My (possibly incorrect) view of the roles was this:

I thought that the coach was just that: he was given a squad of players, a formation, and a tactical game to play and his job was to get them all playing to their best in that setting.  He would just deal with the team on the training pitch and in the dressing room.

The DoF would identify in what formation and with what tactics the current team would play best and then give that to the coach.  Meanwhile he would be repsonsible for identifying, with the help of a scouting network, and bringing in new players who would improve the team, those existing players we wanted to keep, and those we wished to sell.

Contracts and signings would be continued to be dealt with by the Chief Exec or whtever his title is i.e Mark Ashton.

That makes sense to me, so keep LJ as coach, MA handling the contracts and budgets side, and the DoF determining how we play and what players we need.

Though as I said previously I thought that that actually was the vision; we've just neglected to appoint a DoF.

I think "Director of Football" IS a magic wand where SL and LJ are concerned because I don't think either wants an additional voice.

My more practical one wish would be to grow a pair and go all out to sign an experienced out and out leader as a matter of priority.

I assume this is what O'Neil could have been. I certainly assume this person would be older. But someone who will lead the charge.

The challenge is where to play them and who will drop out - ideally for me this leader would control the midfield and all around him.

But if we're committed to going to 4-3-3 with pace up front on the flanks, then LEADER plus perm 2 from 3 of Korey, Pack, Brownhill.

Good question.

For me it would be to invest in a top recruitment setup.

First team really, clubs like Peterborough, Preston and Brentford seem to get it right far more frequently than we do.

I'd like to see us sign a quality head scout with lots of connections and allow him to appoint a team of adept scouts working domestically and internationally.

We've had too much chopping and changing there recently.. Keith Burt.. the chap from Bournemouth then Mervyn Day who seemed to do the role in the interim and then permanently.

Something is clearly going wrong here. If i'm being greedy I'd also like Ashton out of player recruitment as part of that arrangement. Leave recruitment to the scouts and manager.

Do we need a top level scout ?

From what was reported this season we have pep on board time to test him with a few requests for some youth players or back up players .

I read yesterday that you're now only allowed 2 loans from prem clubs per season? Can anyone confirm?

If so though, I can see us trying for a couple of Man City players on loan.

Completely agree. There's something not quite right about our recruitment, with several players signed who are then deemed to be not up to the grade. Definitely needs looking at.
