Erithacus
Ay, the Great Storm and Flood of '68. Is it really a half century ago? Gosh... I remember being stuck in Parson Street school, watching the rain lashing and hearing the rumblings overhead and thinking that there was an awful lot of rain coming down. By afternoon, the headmaster assembled everyone and sent us home. By that time, the Malago was getting out of control: a lot of Marksbury Road and the Tip was washing with water; the railway tunnel at Sheene Road was impassable and that was only the start. Some houses were now in several inches of water, and rising. By evening the worst of the flood here was covering many square miles, with people losing valuables, cars being swept along and help stretched to breaking point. It was quite a mess when the levels went down and only then could the full extent of the damage be seen. But we did have a few days off school. Lanterne Rouge
There was a thread a while back with loads of old photos of AG and Bemmy generally which had a lot of photos of the flooding in it. Is it possible someone could find it and perhaps pin it in the classics? It was a really interesting read and one I wouldn`t mind revisiting now and again. @Tomarse? WhistleHappy
Thought you were gonna say... Sgt Pepper taught the band to play. Remember the floods well... Was twelve at the time. Wow what a mess that was, Pensford, Keynsham, Willsbridge devastation.. Roads and bridges gone! Hundreds of thousands of flood damaged WD&HO Wills merchandise dumped on tips, (and duly 'salvaged' by local entrepreneurs! )
Erithacus
If you go and have a wander around Pensford (near the Miners' Cafe) or Woollard, you'll see flood level markers in the walls of buildings. They give you a really powerful indication as to how much water inundated the place - especially when you look how far and high they are from the rivers. Undy English
There's a famous photo of this flood that always appears in the Bristol Post; Duckmoor Road flooded with a boat full of people being paddled up the main street. My grandfather was in there as one of the paddlers! Always told us how bad it was and that the family basically lived upstairs in the house for a few days. Reigate Red
I was 5 at the time and attending Luckwell School - I remember we got some days off. A quick google found the following and I hadn't realised how widespread the flooding was.
