New fifa rules will come in the season after next which will significantly impact on the number of loan players a club can release. The number of players a club can have out on loan will be limited to between 6 and 8. Currently Chelsea have 39 out on loan, Man City 28 and Wolves 27.

City must have quite a few out on loan as well.....it’s a important part of development for young players. There’s no other competitive football otherwise.

Could be the FA will go back to reintroducing the combination league as was.

Could possibly be wrong, but I thought this ruling was for players over the age of 21?

Couldn't see anything in the eurosport article and a quick skim of the old bbc article didn't say anything. This sort of rule is highlighted to affect premier league clubs who stockpile players, but if we're saying loans of any kind then City probably have between 10-20 players out on loan with a lot in non league so will also hit us. I guess it means we'd have a much stronger U23's team but that's not what we want.

The proposal's a bit vague but I would have thought that Chelsea will be letting a lot of players go (despite the story saying otherwise!).

The Fifa council will ratify new rules in the New Year that have prompted fears that clubs that loan out a large number of players, such as Chelsea, will be forced into a rethink. But Premier League clubs are hopeful that domestic loans and those involving club or association trained players under the age of 21 or 23 will not be affected by the rule change.

Non-domestic loans or those involving players over the age of 21 or 23 are likely to be capped at six, seven or eight, but that would not cause Chelsea huge problems.

With clubs likely to be given more than a year to fall in line with the rule change, until the 2020-21 season, Chelsea believe they could make adjustments to make sure they fulfil the new criteria without having to offload a large number of players.

Chelsea currently have 39 players out on loan, but a large number of them are club or associated-trained players aged under 23 or 21 and 20 of them are currently playing in England. The matter will be discussed in February, with Fifa aiming to have the new rules in place in March, ahead of their implementation for the start of the 2020-21 campaign.

IF they had to sell a loophole would then just be fixed buy back prices and first refusals on any player they sell who progresses well. If domestic loans under 23 are excluded we'll be fine under the new rule

We need the u23 stuff to be more competitive.  Something like the combination would be a start.

If ours and everyone else’s u23s were stronger that would be better than what we have today.

The recent u23 game v Cardiff.....

Luke Williams named three first-team players in the starting eleven, with Wright captaining the side, while Jens Hegeler also featured.

Similarly, Cardiff named three players who have played in the Premier League this season in their team. Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Jazz Richards, and Loic Damour have also featured for Neil Warnock’s side in this campaign.

Imagine our u23s being:

O’Leary | Vyner Wright (coming back from injury) H.Smith Pring | O.Edwards Bakinson Morrell J.Andrews | McCoulsky Eisa / Semenyo

Against a similar close to first team set of players.  Wouldn’t that be better than us worrying about loaning out players in case someone gets injured (Morrell in Korey’s scenario) knowing his u23 game will be competitive, and available if needed.

I agree, the problem is there's no real benefit to doing well at U23's level, if there was a real incentive I imagine teams may put out stronger teams.
