Pugofwar
In my days supporting City I can fondly recall a number of left backs who were outstanding footballers and among the best in their position for whichever league we were in at the time - Mickey Bell, Jim Brennan, Joe Bryan and now Jay Dasilva. In the same time frame I can't ever remember having a right back that fulfilled those criteria. Bradley Orr was a converted midfielder who did a good job, Mark Little was decent enough but unspectacular, back in the day Louis Carey started off well as a right back but then moved into the centre. So my question is, did Bristol City ever have a really great right back - maybe there is someone before my time who I'm not aware of? p.s. Gerard Lavin doesn't count
BobBobSuperBob
We’ve had the odd decent one for the level we were at Ayling , Adam Locke But ‘great’ (And the quality of Scott , Bell , Barnard , Brennan ,.... Bryan ....) Im struggling - probably have to go back to Gerry Sweeney and even he was solid / decent rather than ‘great’ (At top level division though) Great bloke definitely

reddogkev
When you factor in Nicky Hunt, it does seem we are cursed with the old RB spot. I hoped Pisano was going to be the man, but another to fall foul of the City curse; the same curse that robbed us of the skills and determination of Luke Ayling. reddogkev
Actually, there is something to the RB curse, it also curtailed the promising careers of Amankwaah and Riberio. If Riberio hadn't succumbed to serious injuries, he would've been our number 1 RB for years, until a Prem League club signed him. Perhaps the club needs to hire someone spiritual / mystical to look into this situation!

And Its Smith
Our best RB in recent years is Jim Brennan when he filled in there for a few games!

I'm struggling to believe it too, but we're only a couple of months shy of 20 years since we sold him to Florist. Is that really recent?

I think a tall, rangy player on the right would compliment Dasilva quite well.

Very good left footed right back. We have not had many. Don't think Ayling was very good for us at right back in the championship, as we brought in Matthews to play who did a much better job when on loan. Hunt underrated imo. Not maybe high end championship, but certainly a decent championship right back.

Negan
Can remember Adam Matthews being solid on his first loan spell, we got him back and it was like he’d won a competition to play for us. I honestly don’t think there’s much wrong with Jack Hunt currently, gets a lot of unnecessary stick, certainly not the best RB in the league but he’s solid enough, think if we can keep him fit the whole season we’ll see a better player. Chips in with plenty of assists too.
The Batman
Scott Murray in the right wing back role was exceptional. Adam locke was a good right back, as was Orr. But ultimately yes, exceptional left backs, not many on the other side. Hopefully Vyner can support Hunt for this year. Don't fancy Wright in that position if I'm honest. Boston Red
Not only do we not have good right backs, we also have stinkers. 1. Brian Mitchell. 2. Gerard Lavin. 3. Nicky Hunt. 4. Ryan McGivern. 5. Richard Foster. Even Jack Hunt, though competent enough, is a bitter disappointment as we paid nearly 2 million for a specialist in that position. And then of course, Adam Matthews turned rubbish the second time he signed on loan for us, and Luke Ayling turned brilliant as a right back as soon as he left us. Definitely cursed. Still, at least left back is blessed.
cidered abroad
Ivor Guy, Tony Ford, Trevor Jacobs, Gerry Sweeney, even Donnie Gillies. Since 1980 struggling a bit but Rob Newman played there, Andy Llewellyn, and Orr did well. But true, good left backs are in the majority.
