Soft underbelly

Whilst looking at an article about tomorrow nights ref, it stated these stats about us

285 fouls – Fewest in Sky Bet Championship

24 yellow cards – Fewest in Sky Bet Championship

1 red card – 16th in Sky Bet Championship

Which as many of us have said we are to nice, with just trying to nick the ball rather than go in hard. And this foul count despite the likes of Derby and many others falling over and conning refs wit the slightest little brush against them, which we don't seem to do much either.

If Massengo played regularly, the last stat would soon double.

Is it nasty? Or is it a lack of intensity? Getting touch tight? Because that is what I think of when I think of the Leeds, Wolves teams mentioned, not necessarily ‘ nasty ‘. Fouls, yellows etc tend to follow from that. COYR

It’s doing the hard yards, purposeful yards in the first place.  You don’t have to foul a lot if you commit to marking your man tighter in the first place.

We commit timid, silly little fouls through bad positioning.  We cannot engage / intercept a bad opposition touch because often we are still trying to get close. The player then resumes a semblance of control and we are then at the point where we cannot pull out, and it’s usually a little shove or trip.  It’s never a Nathan Baker full blooded tackle that’s mis-timed.

It’s  intensity and commitment / desire to get tight in the first place that we suffer from.

I noticed how many times on Saturday in 50/50 balls how we pulled back rather than "battle" for the ball.

Funny , was just about to post similarly ! Compared to our meagre yellow card tally those above us are as follows : Norwich 39 , Brentford 36, Watford 50, Swansea 45, Bournemouth 41 Boro 43. Either a soft underbelly or we’re simply not at it . Not wanting it enough or simply not putting a shift in . At best we’re Nice !!!

They nastily pass the ball to team mates consistently. The overwhelming majority of teams getting promoted are possession based.

Soft is also a football player not wanting the ball, showing for it, getting into shape. A mindset BCFC players have over seasons and are displaying now.

Interesting when you compare our 24 yellows to those numbers

Perhaps we get extra points at the end of the season for being jolly nice friendly people

We have plenty of tippy tappy “ creative” type midfielders but they’re all quiet little mice who barely say boo to a goose . Perhaps Williams will be the missing link ? The added steel and the vocalist in the middle to get our sensitive little creative types pulling their bloody fingers out ? !!!!!!

Something else  thats missing is clever players that win there team penalties we seldom get a pen or when the chips are down and a goal is needed where is our player arching his back screaming out rolling around in agony in and around the penalty area winning his team a freekick  so the dead ball specialist can step up and curl one into the top corner it simply never happens at the gate so thats no pens no dangerous freekicks rarely threaten from corners oh and we struggle with throw ins no wonder we fail to score all the above are basics that seem to happen at most games throughout the football league but not at bristol city fooball club WHY

Apart from the puctuation, spot on. Trouble is we are rarely near the opposition penaly area.

We’ve been ‘too nice’ for years. It was actually one of the things I was impressed and hopeful with at the start of DH’s tenure - we seemed to be far stronger as a unit and more in the oppositions faces, as well as being more street smart in games.  But that all seems to have disappeared now and we’re back to being weak again. Shame.

The "bite" in midfield disappeared with Pack, Brownhill, and Smith leaving. All three weren't noted for leaving a foot in, but at least the opposition knew we had a midfield that wouldn't roll over.

At the beginning of the season, DH recognised the softness and said that will have to change - it hasn't, if anything it has got worse.

Mawson said on joining that City have always been regarded as a soft touch and that is now changing - it hasn't and it isn't.

Aside from Hunt, Kalas, Rowe, and Mawson, who do we have that can let an opponent know he's been tackled ?

It's the weediest City squad I have ever known.

He did try to address with Joe Williams, and I think a few have said Walsh has a little bit of edge (haven’t seen it myself).

Can't help doing this but certain players were not fully committed in their efforts against Derby from the off. The ball was lofted down the centre of the pitch and Wells made a half hearted attempt to challenge for the ball, effectively the defender had a free header and we were then on the defense from our kick off as a result. A cross field ball was played to the left wing with no or little attempt to stop it, the cross was made with a limp challenge of a lifted foot from Semenyo and the scorer had a free run into the danger area to prod the ball home.

I will call players out  such as Nagy, who I like, Hunt gets pushed around, Vyner seems lost in midfield and doesn't get near to challenging and Wells has to be the laziest weakest striker I've seen, with no fight in his belly. For all his physical attributes, Fammy gets bullied far too easily. Add in the pussies that are COD and Jamie Patterson when fit, as well as a very small JD (when fit) who gets targeted and is not up to the game physically. It's no surprise that the likes of Rotherham, Brum, Cardiff and, actually any team in this division, get and easy ride, as they all seam superior fitness wise. That's why we are still thought of as pussies (not just soft touches).

If that's the case, we need to look at out-footballing the opposition- yes it can be done.

If we want to outmuscle, it won't be done with the current personnel- I get you need a balance but if we have a surfeit of technically sound midfielders, might it not be best to set up in a way that gives them the best platform to control the game? To service players like Wells- and with the right barrier between the defence and midfield, can give Palmer a platform to show his better attributes while masking some of his weaknesses.

I don't actually know what we're trying to do- I think we have the players to play better football than we have done in recent times, minus the few exceptions.

Throwing on 3-4 strikers when chasing ever time, and sticking Wells on the left absolutely does not do this!

I think there really is some truth in that. Would MA allow a championship equivalent of Roy Keane to be signed?

Your answer is Bradley Dack who was on the radar several season’s ago but failed our ‘good human’ test.

Our (massive) loss.

To be fair at the time we wanted to sign him...during the winter window of 15/16...City were in a relegation battle and Gillingham were in Lg1 play-offs.  Add in their owner and it was always gonna be a tough transfer to bring in.

If you add "cheating anti-football" to the existing ingredients of no bite and no creativity, you have become Preston North End. Then I am off.
