It is where they are trying to make themselves look better than they are in comparison by having a pop at someone else. My ex boss used to do the same, he would belittle good people in front of others, a type of bullying. The people who do this are not self aware and their behaviour discourages loyalty and high performance. Note the comments about their best striker recently. Kane is well ahead of all three of these, plus Owen, in terms of total goals, mins/goal, and goals/game for England. He's also, in domestic first tier competitions (ie the First Division, PL, La Liga and MLS, but let's ignore the J League) ahead of all four of Lineker, Shearer, Owen and Rooney in terms of mins/goal and goals/game. He's behind Rooney (-25) and Shearer (-79) in terms of total goals, but they've both finished their careers, and Kane is certain to pass Rooney and fairly likely to pass Shearer.
