Herbert (Herbie) Gillam was a local reporter, specialising on Rovers from way back in the day.

Gillam would have regularly interviewed Rovers manager Bert Tann, who is referencing him here.

I remember Bert Tann (the real one), but couldn't place Herbert, probably because he reported on Rovers - I wouldn't have been interested.

About the same time, the Post had Peter Godsiff reporting on City and Bruce somebody? being the Rovers guy.

Back in my day, it was Peter Godsiff (City) and Robin Perry (Rovers).

Re. Bert Tann (the real one), he used to live in Frenchay, and I had the pleasure of meeting him and his wife one day.

I recounted the story on here some time ago, but suffice to say they were an absolutely adorable couple.

I can only remember Herbie Gillam reporting on City games with his regular phrase "They're holding their own" !

Grange Park Frenchay, I  believe, and his daughter went to Chipping Sodbury Grammar School.

I don't know the address itself, but (coming from Downend) go left at what used to be the Hambrook roundabout, then first left heading towards Frenchay Common then left again to a little cul-de-sac with a number of real stone houses.

A friend and I were collecting conkers around the Common, when my friend got hit by a falling branch.

We knocked at this random house, Mrs Tann patched him up and gave us a cold drink each, before Bert Tann drove us both back to Bromley Heath.

He even laughed warmly when I thanked him, but confided that I was a City supporter.

As I said, a lovely couple.

He used to report on City games on Radio Bristol didn't he? Was he before Phil Tottle? And Colin Howlett did Rovers?

I remember Colin Howlett with his "..a large contingent from Bristol rovers" bollocks. It was probably him that started their over inflated sag numbers

they’ll be in a rush to get those 13 new signings before pre season starts at this rate

Which prospective signing couldn’t be impressed after a visit around the ground and training facilities?
I am surprised that there isn’t a queue of top ballers just itching to sign.

Especially when their new maintenance man starts work with his pot of paint and brush.

It'll look Championship ready.

Do you think he could paint a picture of a new stand at the (very) open end? One of those pictures that deceives the eye as long as you stand in exactly the right place.

That might be the only way they can ever get a new stadium ...
