I used to get Shoot every week. Regarding the kit I believe that we had white shorts and red socks that season, the black was part of our second strip of white shirts and black shorts, not sure why we ended up with that combination against Man City?

I loved Shoot. I was allowed a couple of comics a week and when I discovered it this was my fav. I probably started reading from the first few editions, wish I'd kept some.

We did have black shorts in the home kit one season though.

Match and Roy of the Rovers for me.  No surprise to you all, but the “stats” stuff in Match was what differentiated it from Shoot. Once a geek, always a geek.

I used to love both Match and Shoot, especially the action shots from games. The annuals were always in my Xmas stocking. 

Kits were so much better back then without the sponsors emblazoned on them. 

I like the red and black too. Much better than all red when we play away to teams with white shorts (I know this season there seems to have been a change in rules about clashing shorts).

Yep, I got Roy of the Rovers too. Absolutely loved it. Especially how the players could hear conversations between people in the crowd!

I had that one. Toss up for me between that and the Umbro one as our best ever.  
I agree with the posters saying we should wear black shorts. Red and white lacks identity. I like what Sampdoria do with their plain blue and white…. The stripe makes it unique. We could do similar and claim an identity.

Shoot , Match and Roy of of the Rovers were the highlight of the week for me - along with watching teletext for score updates (waiting for the pages to change).

Roy of the Rovers was great - loved Billy's boots and Hotshot Hamish & Mighty Mouse.

I recently sold a load of Shoot and Scoop comics, people will spend £2 or £3 each in the right condition. I sold around 40 for £100. Great stuff although my sister used to read "Striker" before me and tell me the plot, an early spoiler she was (not you @Chessels Chick another sister).

Nah, could never beat Charles Buchan's publication ‘Football Monthly’.

Shows I was a trail blazer as an internet football forum contributor and an astute observer of the game that I had a letter published, aged 13, bemoaning (nothing changes there) the fact that the magazine ignored teams from the South West. I highlighted the fact we had talent such as Chris Garland and Trevor Francis. 

Think I received £5 for having the letter published - which was great riches in those days. 

Like another life frankly.

Remember Goal? Think it came out before Shoot but they ran at the same time for a while.

Kevin Keegan and Gordon Hill both wrote regular columns and I remember being thrilled when they talked about their games against us. "Bristol City are too good to go down", Kev assured us, and he was dead right too, as the events away to Coventry a few weeks later were to prove. Happy days.

 I Can remember an advert for Goal done in an American accent. Was something like " Goal the Worlds greatest Soccer Weekly."

Anyone remember a weekly / monthly called “Tactics” (I think).  Was A5 size, and did a pass map of John Shaw’s goalkicks one week.

The only problem with black is that we always seem to get relegated when it's in the first strip (last time was 2012-13 when SO'D was manager and we went down). We also went down the season shown in your picture (Mick Harford).

I've got an original copy of "Foul: the book of football 72-75" a 'best of' of the first football fanzine or "alternative paper" from the early to mid 70s, produced by some Cambridge uni clever clogs.   They had to snip a part of one page out of every copy to avoid being sued by the Sunday People.

Cynical chaps, they called their magazine "Foul" as opposed to things like "Shoot!" or "Goal!" or "Box-entry!" because they thought the game was going downhill from the BestLawCharlton ideal of the 1960s and all the greats before that. They were not impressed by teams like Leeds, or the increasingly "professional" and increasingly coached game with fewer goals.

I used to buy Shoot, Match and later on 90 Minutes, all good reads (although I recall later that Match became a bit more “comicy”)

Not long before Shoot was first published, a neighbour who was a newsagent gave me a publicity/promo copy sent out to retailers to get them to order. The cover (featuring Bobby Moore) and most of the contents, including Free League Ladder and Team Tabs, was the same as the first copy on sale. However what was interesting it also featured comic strips of which the one I remember was Billy’s Boots. Obviously the strips were dropped by the time it got to the shops and Billy’s Boots ended up in Tiger and Jag or another title I think.

I also used to get Goal, and it was always excited when a City player was featured as a Colour poster page. Seem to remember John Galley in one, and Alan Skirton in Shoot.

Did anyone else used to collect the colour shots and put them in those old hard back exercise books like a scrapbook. Found mine the other day. Remember seeing fans outside players entrance trying to get autographs holding these scrapbooks most games.

Also Bubble Gum cards... those were days... jumpers for goalposts and all that.

As a little kid I bought a bunch of Charlie Buchan Football Monthlies at the local church hall jumble sale. Proudly showed them to my Dad, who responded "Very nice. Now you can take them back... I donated them."

try reading that again… I’ve said the stripe makes it unique. If it didn’t have the stripe/hoop what would it be? Plain blue. All I’m saying is City could do something similar so we stop looking exactly the same as forest, Charlton, Swindon, Barnsley etc etc.

He said everybody was drunk on cider and there was a lot of football like chants.

He went on to say he was not accustomed to this behaviour, and it didnt happen at surrey games!

Yeah you could easily do that in red, white and black…. Key is to stick to it. Palace still regularly use the white with diagonal blue/red stripe - that’s another unique example.

I used to love Shoot too, as others have said the League Ladders were a clever idea and was exciting collecting them over a few weeks. 

There was another magazine out around the same time that claimed to use a computer to calculate results between regional collections of teams that were made up of players from the regions  picked by editors/writers of the magazine - example, South West, London, Midlands etc. - anyone remember what that was called?

Match was around the same time as Shoot, I switched for a few weeks but went back to Shoot, tail between my legs !!
